Yesterday was a piece of cake. We went to a closer report, parked and realized there weren’t many people around. There was a group lesson to start at 1030 but there was nobody signed up. Instead of paying $90 for a one hour private lesson that I was considering for Peyton, she got a 2 instructor ratio for just her for a mere $35! Given it was just her, they were cutting it from a 1.5 hour lesson to an hour. Fine by me. I wasn’t sure she could hang any longer than that, so I was fine with it. I headed to the lodge to watch her as it was actively snowing. Brandon and Dave set off to the other lift. Both lifts were facing the lodge so I set up my stuff there. The downfall of a small resort is that there are fewer options in a storm. Or so we thought (more on that later). I went to get her after an hour, and the instructor was giving me a summary about her hour. He said she was a great listener and was getting comfortable with her turns. She also knows how to bail in an emergency. He was reassuring that she knew how to stop. Something she didn’t do so well last year. I thanked him for the run down. Peyton told me she lost her other instructor before the last run was done. I’d already seen him go back to the lodge before the last lift was taken. Peyton had so much fun out there but because I wasn’t dressed for skiing, I had to stall to wait for Dave. There were only double lifts meaning that someone had to go alone. Alex, the instructor, warned me she wasn’t quite ready to go alone. I fed her some lunch though she just wanted to get back out there. In her words: “I want to go back out there IMMEDIATELY!” Even as Dave and Brandon came back in to eat, she was buckling up and getting her helmet back on. She was serious! It turned out Dave was going to go back out with both of them while I was going to check on the other lessons for the day. The 1230 pm lessons were full so I was going to return before the 2 pm lesson to check. As I did that, I heard someone call my name. K linh was there with her family. Apollo was in a semi private lesson with his cousins. I chatted with K and hung out with Keira before having Dave call it quits. His knee was hurting him and both kids were a bit wet from the snow/rain. We said goodbye and headed back to my mom’s. We showered up and had a nice taco night in. We headed to bed early as we were going to have a long day today.
After almost 10 hours of sleep, we woke up to head out for a longer ski resort. The weather had turned a bit, and after a harrowing two hour drive in the snow (lucky for our snow tires and 4WD), we arrived to find out the lifts were closed for avalanches. There were large “booms” from the blasts that were being set. The lifts weren’t supposed to open until 130 or so. We caffeinated and waited to see what we’d do. We redeemed our online tickets and went for an early lunch. We hung out inside for a good hour plus, and then later heard it was that long to get a table anywhere. Peyton was excited to see the Olympic Rings. I reminded her this was her second resort visiting an Olympic site. She remembered Vancouver was her first. We decided to ask the ticket booth if our tickets could be refunded. We didn’t get a refund but a credit for the online store ticketing center. Not bad. We’ll use it eventually. The kids were pumped up to go again so we headed back down the mountain. The snow had subsided and the ground cover melting. The drive down wasn’t as bad. We stopped at another smaller resort and the parking attendant didn’t recommend staying. He said “I wouldn’t do it” but there were plenty of cars parked. We decided to go check it out. There were more lifts in operation and this place had night skiing so would stay open later. Not that we would last until 9, but we got the half day pass. We had about 20 minutes to kill before our time was up. We took an easy ride down first, then we took her to a chair that said “no easy way down”, with an anti-green circle sign. Here’s goes nothing! It was a longer lift that took us higher up in the mountain. Wind was blowing ice crystals against our cheeks. It felt like little pin pricks but the kids didn’t mind. The chair swayed in the wind, but I tried not to think bad thoughts. She took her time but did a great job getting down the hill. No falls!! From either of us. Can’t say the same for the boys on their boards. On our next lift up, she told me, “I feel so proud of myself, I’m turning and stopping and not falling!” Eventually, the powder got the best of her as she got stuck in it and both skis popped off. She said, “Well I went a long time without falling.” She knew exactly how to fix her skis to get them back on. I just made sure she didn’t slide down the hill after putting one on at a time. That was the only fall she had on several runs we took. At one point, I had to use the restroom, so Dave took them on his own with instructions to meet him at the top. I took the lift up alone after I was done. As I did, I saw them heading down through the terrain park!! I watched them come down and up to a steep jump. Fortunately, she wasn’t going at a fast enough speed and didn’t make it up the jump. She slumped backwards and then figured out how to navigate around the jump. Brandon followed, too. Dave hadn’t intended her to go that route, but she jumped ahead of him while he was strapping in. I did meet them down at the bottom after that. Sheesh! Good thing we were going mostly on the same lift as my credit card and ID had fallen out of my pocket. My cash was still there but the lift operator motioned to me to return my stuff!! He noticed it was me I guess he saw that I’d dropped it. Because everyone looks the same in helmets out there! Later Peyton complained about her feet hurting. I told her we can stop when they hurt too much. She was good for another few runs before telling me “this is it.” She told me, “The best run is the first one, and the last one is the worst. The ones in the middle are good.” I told her we’d have a great last run. We did the long one for our final. It was now super windy at the top. We did one last run and called it a day. We got about 2.5 hours but it was action-packed. The drive home was not nearly as bad. The kids were up the whole time unlike earlier in the day when they took an early nap. My mom was waiting to go out to dinner after we’d showered up. We went to a Thai place whose owner was excited to talk to Dave about craft beers. Dave was happy to oblige. Bedtime happened quickly after dinner as we knew the kids were exhausted. Dave turned in quickly after them. Here are our pictures!
After getting in on Tuesday night. They both ran to the couch and assumed these positions:

I had to stop her long enough for a selfie. She didn’t want to take one. It slowed her down from getting back on the lift.
At squaw, we thought this may be the closest they got to the lifts today.
