Traveling with two!

This weekend marks our first trip as a family of four.  The last time we flew, my parents helped out tremendously on the flight.  This time, we were headed to LA for Jon and Jenny’s wedding, and it was just the four of us, two roller bags, two car seats, a stroller, diaper bag, camera bag, and a pump.  Phew, and I don’t think we left anything behind!  It started on Thursday, right after work.  We each picked up a kid, and rendezvoused at home.  It was off to the airport, where Dave dropped us off, as we checked in curbside.  I went through the security line with Peyton bjorned to me, holding the diaper and pump slung around a shoulder each, and with Brandon firmly by the hand.  I beeped three times before going through successfully.  Each time I beeped, I had to go back through the line, and Brandon, who had passed his first time through, followed me back and forth each time.  I made the mistake of wearing a belt (I never do on my jeans!), and almost left my phone behind if not for the seasoned security guy reminding me of it.  We finally parked ourselves at the gate to wait for Dave who was parking the car.  While we were waiting, I was leaning over watching someone play a Facebook game (the one I’m playing now) about a farm, I heard, “Robyn!”  I turned around to see Jennifer and Jesselyn coming down the walkway.  I knew they were going to Jennifer’s sister’s wedding this past weekend, but didn’t realize they would be on our flight!  We boarded earlier, so we didn’t see them until after we were already on board.  At first, Brandon had some sort of amnesia.  After we first saw them, he turned to me and said, “Who’s that, Mommy?”  I don’t know if he was just messing around, or if he inherited Dave’s poor memory with names.
After the flight, we went to the family restroom, while they deplaned.  It was only soon enough that Brandon and Jesselyn were running around, chasing after each other, while we waited for luggage.  We took a bus to the rental car place after gathering all the luggage.  It was almost 11pm by that time!  Both kids crashed in the car on the drive back to Dave’s parents’ house.  But as soon as we pulled them from the car seats, both kids were up and at ’em.  It took another hour before they went back to sleep.
The next morning, we got up at our usual time (7am) and got ready for Disneyland!  We bought passes again this year (hopefully [strike that – determined] going to buck the trend of having a baby the year we get a pass – we’re 2 for 3 now).   We wanted to meet at Pish and Katie on Chamkasem time (that’s early!), so we rushed out of the house.  We needed to stop by a drug store to pick up diapers (we had only a few), and then we were in the parking lot by about 845am.  I thought we were late, but it turns out that the park didn’t open until 9am!  This is what Dave said was part of his master plan to drive all over the place looking for a Target.  We met up with Katie and Pish within 5 minutes of us being there; it was perfect timing!  We rode a few rides together, with mutually agreed upon rides by both Brandon and Katie.  Katie is more brave than Brandon, and showed him it was okay to ride Dumbo.  So for the first time in 3 years, Brandon willingly rode on Dumbo.  I sat out with Peyton (as I do not particularly like travelling around in circles), taking that opportunity to feed her.  We went on It’s a Small World, and she really enjoyed it!  She was bobbing her head up and down, clapping along with the music.  After Pish and Katie left, we went over to have lunch and get our passports redeemed.  They kept our pictures from last year, and Brandon took his goofy picture.  We ended up lasting until 4pm – which is longer than we had intended.  Both kids had taken their nap, and Mommy got to enjoy a sundae without beady eyes watching.  We went to check into the hotel, a suite that Dave had gotten on the bidding, internet travel site.  We had Brandon on the pullout, a pack and play for Peyton (provided by the hotel), and a bed to ourselves.  It didn’t last long though, as we were soon joined by Peyton, who was starting to get a drippy nose along with congestion.  We all had another rough night of sleep (well, except Brandon, who was just fine by himself).

Saturday was a HOT day!  We dropped the kids off at Dave’s cousin’s house, then headed up to the ceremony.  The wedding was outdoors, at this beautiful home in Bel Air.  The whole thing was absolutely beautiful, but the poor groomsmen in their tuxes!  After the ceremony, we headed back to Lih’s to gather the troops to head over to a curry place, where we’d eaten many times during college.  It was just like old times, only Brandon and Peyton were there.  Brandon didn’t last long, as Dave had to regulate, and give him a good old fashioned time out.  He was a bit out of control, not listening to us.  We went back to Lih’s for a little while, then headed over to our next hotel.  In transit, the kids (and this one) took naps in the car.  We refreshed and stayed until Dave’s parents got there, then headed over to the reception.  I was worried about how Peyton would do, since she hadn’t seen her grandparents since she was 1 month old.  She ended up doing well, but I think Brandon really tired them out.  Dave’s dad said that he wouldn’t listen to him.  He was being bossed around by a 3 year old!  When we were around, Dave’s dad said, “Why does he listen to you and not to me?”  We closed down the wedding, which is something we haven’t done for awhile, but we didn’t last for the after party.
In the morning, we headed over to dim sum with Mike on our way back to Dave’s parents’ house.  We just wound down and relaxed on Sunday in preparation for our departure on Monday morning.   We ended our trip in LA eating the biggest bowl of shaved ice EVER.  And it was a small one.  It fed 5 of us – Brandon, Dave, Teddy, Eunice and me, and there was some leftover in the trough.  Actually, it fed 5.5, as Peyton got in on the action.  It was real fruit, so she ate some of the mango.  It had some boba but she didn’t have any of that.  It was yummy 🙂
We got up at 345am today to get everything packed in the car, to return it and check in in time for a 640am flight.  I ended up getting to work at around 930am while Dave got both kids to school.  To make matters worse, Dave had a softball game tonight.  If they had won, it would have meant another game.  I was secretly, or not so secretly, hoping for an early end to the tournament (it was the playoffs), so I could have some relief.  I got Brandon off to bed by 8pm, and Dave got home while Peyton was being topped off.  Brandon was still up, but very sleepy, and came out to say goodnight to Dave.  Peyton is in the living room doing tricks (maybe some residual caffeine from the coffee I drank early this morning to stay awake).  She is “cruising” down the length of our coffee table, trying to swipe at the computer as I type.  She is also straddling the coffee table and sofa, walking between the two.  Earlier, she let go of the sofa and pivoted over to the table to have both hands on the table.  She is fearless!  Dave wants her to slow down and not learn how to walk just yet.  I think she’s finally slowing down now.  Just in time for us to all go to sleep.
