Bruin Softball

We woke up and got ready for the day. Peyton practiced piano, while Brandon worked more on his science project. Then, we headed to PA to get sandwiches to bring into the stadium. It was a free game, and we could sit wherever we wanted. We chose the first row, right behind UCLA’s dugout. We were super early, 1030 am, for a 12 pm game, but the Bruins were already taking batting practice. It was quite a show, and the kids were entertained. They spent time retrieving foul balls, and in return, Peyton was given a UCLA brand new softball.

It did get hot out there, and Peyton had forgotten her backpack with her glasses. So, we did a switcharoo, where Brandon took Dave’s glasses, and Peyton took Brandon’s glasses, and all were happy except Dave. We had friends coming, and we asked for a spare pair, which they said they would bring. But they didn’t come until 1130 am, where the Cardinal was taking infield practice. Peyton had three pairs to choose from, so she took the ones that were the “real” sunglasses. Then, the four kids went to sit with other friends they found, since it was League day. There were various teams from around the bay that were there. The kids followed the shade provided by the light pole. It was a small sliver, but luckily, they are small people. It was a good game, with 2 homeruns hit by UCLA. Peyton had two balls in her bag that was left behind, but she had an old glove, that she purposely brought so she wouldn’t lose her real glove. And Dave found my walk a thon sharpie that had our name on it, that I’d put on there to make sure I got it back from the kids. Peyton’s challenge was to fill it with autographs. The girls would come up and down the stairs, and Dave would stop them and ask on Peyton’s behalf. Finally, we got to Lisa Fernandez, one of the assistant coaches, and Dave showed Peyton a picture of Lisa Fernandez’s bat. He said, “You’re finally someone when you have your name on a bat and other people buy it!” She signed her glove, on the wrist strap, including her years that she won a National Championship. She even asked Peyton how old she was, and we saw later online that she started at age 8. Peyton has four years on her! We waited around for a few players autographs, but most just wanted to take off. The Stanford players were talking to the rest of the stadium, addressing questions from the crowd. We went over to say hi to other members of the league that had come out before we headed home. Brandon had his buddy league pictures to take, so the boys did that while Peyton got some down time.

When they got home, we went to get groceries, return a present, and deliver a present. Brandon was talking, and Peyton closed her eyes and said, “Would you please stop shouting?” She looked like she was hungover! Luckily, she didn’t get sick in the car, but she looked it. She refused to wear her hat while walking back and forth at the stadium, saying she was in the shade. And she didn’t have her camelback, but just a small water cup that she was refilling from the bottle Dave bought her and rationed out to her. She just had too much sun this weekend, but she rebounded with food.

After showers, Brandon did more work on his report with Dave, while Peyton wanted to play piano duets (she with one hand, I with the opposite) until bedtime. It was a fun, but she would give me the “look” when I didn’t correctly play my part, even as far as telling me, “KEY SIGNATURE”, which is what I say to her when she messes up the key signature.
