Long Championship Sunday

This morning, Peyton’s game was at 8 am. Dave and Peyton left before 620 am, while I was just getting Brandon up. I was ready to go, but Brandon had to go to baseball travel ball call backs, so he had to be fully ready to go. After Dave left, Brandon said he couldn’t find his cleats. He said they were in Daddy’s car, which was parked outside the house. After searching a bit for the extra fob, I pushed the button to no avail. The battery on the spare fob, which is hardly used, was dead. I tried calling, but did not receive a call back from him, so we jumped in the car and made the 20 minute drive down to CMB. I unlocked the big car to see if by chance his shoes were there. He looked in the back and middle rows, and still, no cleats. So, he ran to get the keys from Dave. It was only 645 am or before when we arrived at the field. Brandon came back with Dave’s keys, and he told me, “Daddy said to make sure I bring the keys back.” I drove back home, with and eighth of a tank or less of gas remaining in the tank. Hearing Brandon’s words from Dave gave me an idea. When we got home, I pulled into the garage just after 7am, when the warmups were to start happening. Brandon asked me why I was doing that. I told him, “He wanted me to bring the keys back, so if there is gas in his car, we’ll just take his car back.” Brandon said, “Oh, okay!” He didn’t care because he now had his cleats, which were in the trunk of the car. We zipped back down the freeway and back to the field by 720 am. I set up shop, and got all our chairs set up under the canopy. The game started just after 8 am with Peyton starting on the mound. We were playing the younger version of our city’s team. She had 8 strikeouts in 3 innings, but she had 11 walks. She technically pitched a no hitter, as she held them to zero runs in the first inning. She walked in two runs in the second. Then held them to zero again in the third. She was relieved in the fourth, with her teammate shutting things down.

Then, she was up to bat. The other head coach was trying to recruit her for his team last night after our final game on Saturday, during the middle of his own game. We stayed to watch and support them, and she was standing next to me alongside the coach’s area in the dugout. He asked me, “Are you Peyton’s mom?” He introduced himself (in the middle of the game), and said he was working on some things for the next year. He wanted to let us know that he knows Peyton is still “of age” for next year.   He had already asked around and knew that we know one of his players (Hannah, from basketball) who have talked about Peyton. He supposedly asked another of our teammates how Peyton did in the tourney last week. When I told Peyton about playing for him next year with the younger girls, she asked me, “Why would I do that?” Dave asked why he would talk to me and not to him. I told him he’s just her coach. I am her  agent.   He reminds me of Herman Munster in stature and voice. He told his whole team, “GET BACK!” I giggled (you can hear it in the background). I think she took it on the first pitch! She hit a legit double, and then had some heads up base running!

She put 2 runs on the board just like that.

Dave caught it on goPro video.

This was a team that had 1) her basketball friend (whom she pegged in the leg with a pitch), and 2) a basketball rival. Either way, Dave did NOT want to lose to this team.
Luckily, it didn’t happen. I left the game to take Brandon to his call back. It was from 10-12 pm, and he had to be there 15 minutes beforehand, in a totally different direction from where we were. It took us about 20 minutes to get there, and when we arrived, he found his friend to warm up with. I talked to his parents for awhile before Peyton and Dave showed up. They were getting snacks for the next game, since it wasn’t planned ahead of time. They hung around for about 20 minutes, while Peyton iced up her arm. Dave wasn’t sure if it would help since she wasn’t complaining of any pain, but if nothing else, it would cool her down.

They left to go back for the 1230 pm game, and to warm up. She wanted to pitch, but Dave was hesitant to let her. He thinks her coach was asking him what he felt about it, but he wasn’t feeling so well about it. He wanted to give her a rest. I drove us back after Brandon was done. The game weas to start at 1230pm, we arrived at 1235 pm only to learn that the last game had ended late, so they didn’t start until 1245 pm. I didn’t miss anything! We were first up since we were the visiting team. This was a harder team, so it was tougher for us. We went one two three outs in the top of the inning; Peyton struck out.

She started off at shortstop and stayed there for the whole game. The girls we played against were not afraid to hit. One went right up to Peyton, who fielded it cleanly, and made a strong throw to Kelsy at first base. It was such a sweet play, definitely routine, which we do during practice, but it’s another thing to do during practice. Kelsy caught the ball with a pop and the batter was out!

The girls did the best that they could, but it wasn’t enough, and the team lost by one run 4-3. We packed it up and headed out for a late lunch. Later, the girls and I got together for Thuy’s birthday celebration. We enjoyed each other’s company over meat, with Jennifer on the grill. We missed out on Bonnie and Kathy who couldn’t make it this time.

Now, we’ll have a short week with celebrations for Brandon! But first, the second of his playoff games will be tomorrow!

Go Red Sox!
