First Big Tourney

Last weekend, Peyton had a tourney in Stockton. Dave and Brandon had baseball here, so they couldn’t go, but another mom and her daughter were also on their own, so we decided to room together as well as carpool. I was asked to drive as my co-mom had her oil light come on earlier in the week. The rain was a concern, so we had booked and cancelled just before the Friday of the tournament. When it looked like it was back on, we re-booked that Friday. The tourney directors were trying to plan around the rain, and it looked like it was going to go okay. Our games were 11 am, 2 and 5 pm, so that was promising. We left at 8 am, which wasn’t crazy early as other tourneys in the past. We arrived just after 930 am , in time for their 10 am warm up. So far, no rain. The game started at 11 am, and we were the home team. We got off to a great start, holding the other team to one run. Then, when Peyton was leading off to bat, the rain started to barely fall. But by the second pitch, as I was trying to film, the rain was coming down so hard, I could barely get my umbrella out before being soaked! We all ran in different ways for cover, while the girls had a concrete dugout to protect them. We hid every which way, and my friend ended up dry in the bathroom. I joined her until the rain let up, which was still another 30 minutes. The girls were all having a great time listening to videos, while the dirt path area was getting quite muddy. We had to be careful not to slip in it, as that would have been a disaster! The tourney directors made an announcement that the rain delay would be about an hour. So, after an hour of waiting it out, we all left the field to get lunch. We were out for another hour, then as it dried out, we made our way back to the field, which was still soaked. The groundskeepers were scraping water off the fields into large drains by the dugouts. Some other dugouts on the fields weren’t as lucky as our girls, as they only had tarps covering a dirt area, so there were muddy areas in their gear area. We had just got new bags, so luckily they were all protected. The girls had to carry them like backpacks instead of rolling them through the mud. It was a comedy of errors! Finally, after the last rain delay, which felt like those in airports, we were set to play at 5pm! Over 5 hours from the last game played. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a good break for us. We resumed play where we left off, with Peyton striking out before the game was called. More errors by us, more runs by then lead to a defeat. Soon, they were moving to another field to play the second game. The games were cut from 75 minutes to 60 minutes, and stop dead time in the interest of moving the games along. The second game was a bit worse than the first, and the girls were losing some steam. Peyton came in to pitch in the last inning to relieve her friend and teammate. Fortunately, her first pitch was a strike, and she was able to pull herself and the team out of that inning. But we were down by a lot. There was a one hour break between game 2 and 3, and it was chilly by then. We fed the girls food from the snack shack, and then they played out their final game. We left the field after 830 pm, and the girls went right to the room to shower up and get warm. They weren’t terribly hungry, so Peyton finished up her food from lunch, while watching tv in the room. The kids fell asleep after 1030 pm, and initially we thought going 0-3 that we’d play at 8 am. Fortunately, we didn’t have to play until 11 am, which was great news! We woke up, had breakfast, and then checked out, all by 930 am before having to arrive at the field by 10 am. We got to enjoy the room, even though I had not overnight, as a car alarm went off, and I swore it was mine. I jumped up and thought I’d been sleeping on my keys (I was out of it), and had pushed the panic button. I thought someone was trying to break into my car, but as I was going to grab my keys, thought to myself, “What am I going to do, really?” If I saw someone breaking into my car, there wasn’t anything for me to do about it. So I went back to bed trying to figure out plan B’s in the event 1) the car was stolen, 2) the cleats were stolen, as there was nothing else left in the car, as we had both bat bags up in the room. After one game on Sunday, we were all done. We took the girls to lunch, before driving back home. The girls sacked out shortly after we got on the freeway and slept the most part all the way back home. Next weekend, we’ll be back at it! Last time, there were 20 teams, while this time, it appears there are 6 teams. Also, different hotel, and we’ll switch on the driving duties.

Dave and Brandon have Brandon’s tourney, and we’ll have to coordinate how to get Peyton to her first basketball game if we can. No schedules are out yet, so we’ll see midweek how we get all of this coordinated.
