Happy Halloween; In your face!

Today was hectic as I dropped Brandon off and headed straight to work.  Dave had Peyton, so I could start work early, and then leave a little early to get to Peyton’s school on time to help her change her clothes.  I arrived right as Miss Christine was putting Peyton’s tights on.  I helped take over so she could move on to the next kid.  Peyton was happy to have me there, and didn’t leave my side once I was there.  We paraded together, and finally, Dave and Brandon arrived.  Dave was running late, and wasn’t going to come, but Peyton kept asking, “When is Daddy coming?”  I relayed this to him, and finally he did show up.

We quickly got home to feed the kids so we could get ready to go out.  We basically did the same loop we did last year, but we took a break when Peyton said, “I need to go potty!” half way through.  We hadn’t gotten out of our development, so Dave ran her back 1.5 blocks to get her home.  We had to put out candy again like last year.  At our half-way point, the candy was well-stocked, and I even put some of our candy that we got back into the basket just to make sure we had enough.  We walked around and saw a coworker from each of my worksites (Richa and Nela).  We headed down the street to see another set of friends (who are friends of friends), whom we hadn’t seen in over a year.  When they answered the door, they had a baby!  Yeah, it had been awhile since we’d seen them last!  Early in the trick or treating, we had to pull Peyton aside and tell her we couldn’t have her continue unless she said “Thank you.”  She has a habit of just using her eyes to say “Thank you,” but this is not acceptable.  Brandon had to be reminded, but after a few houses, both got into the groove, so we didn’t have to remind them anymore.  In fact, Brandon would practice after ringing the door bell, by muttering, “Trick or treat, thank you.”  We got many compliments on the outfits, and many stopped to talk to Peyton.  We think it’s a good thing to get her more out there.  However, when I was talking to her about what we need to say, she said, “You mean talk to strangers?”  Yeah, it is a bit of conflicting information, since she learned last week to NOT talk to strangers.  Some kid called from across the street to Brandon, “Hey, there’s an angry bird!”  Brandon told me, “Mommy, they are looking at me! And they are laughing me.”  I told him that they were happy about it, and thought it was neat, not laughing at him.  He took it in stride, and was laughing about it.  I think he even bantered with one old guy, who was standing at the door, but didn’t answer it.  The old guy sounded like he was pretty gruff, but Brandon sounded like he was giving him lip right back, like they were two old grumpy guys.

The kids were fighting over ringing the door bells, and a few of them were rung twice when both Brandon and then Peyton would ring it.  We finally had them alternate houses. We were trying to make sure Peyton didn’t eat it while running up the paths, since we have our pictures coming up this weekend (for photog #1 from the daily deals).  One house, she ran up to the door, but then was afraid of the huge fake spider hanging from the wall.  One spider even came down from the ceiling, being motion-activated. We had to skip a few houses which were too scary for both kids.  Neither wanted to ring the doorbells of a few houses.  After about 1.5 hours, we headed home.  Peyton only wanted to hold my hand, but otherwise stayed with us.  Since she had butterfly wings on, I decided against a stroller.  If she got tired, I told her that we’d have to go home. She walked the entire way, with me picking her up to cross the streets.  And only some streets.  We got back home and someone had cleaned us out.  In the 30 minutes we were gone for our second leg, someone had left us with only the dried grassy stuff in the basket.  Boo!  Good thing Dave reserved some of the reese’s pieces, which are one of my favorites!  The kids went to bed (Brandon had bathed before going out) without complaint, and we are enjoying wine and cheese.  (My liver has been induced, and my tolerance has now improved, especially for yummy sweet wines! Thanks (or no thanks, depending on what side of the calories you’re talking about) to Michelle for posting the post-kid snack last week – Dave’s been craving wine and cheese ever since!)

The kids will get to pick 5 pieces of candy to enjoy for the rest of the week, then the rest will probably be donated to the troops, via Peyton’s school.  I convinced them to put all their candy away, and sort through it tomorrow so that they could get some sleep.

We got Peyton in bed, and Dave asked Peyton if she wanted to turn her radio on.  I told him, “She doesn’t even know how to turn it on, what do you mean?”  He lifted her up, and she proceeded to push the correct button, and soon enough music was playing.  Dave said, “Tell Mommy, ‘In your face!'”  Peyton said, “In your face, Mommy!”  Yes, we’re mature around here.  We really are.
