Holiday; Linsanity

Dave had to work today, so I was on kid duty.  My goal was to not have the TV on, since it was technically not a weekend.  The kids were a bit sad to hear this, and Peyton was looking for the remote this morning when she came into the room.  Dave had left well before 7am, and the kids woke up around then.  We started out with a late breakfast, and then played some games that both kids could play.  We opened up a new one, Buckaroo, and it is Bullseye, from TS3, who is cocked and loaded on a spring.  The players must put some gear on him while being careful not to trigger him, spraying all the gear about.  Peyton was first up, since she was the youngest, and she immediately snapped the mechanism, causing her to jump.  Brandon and I reset it and continued.  She was very gun shy, and later said, “I don’t want to play, I’m scared!”  She ran away, and really was afraid to play.  She beat me at Sequence, and then beat Brandon at Hi Ho Cheerio.  We did some of Brandon’s homework, and some of the reading program.  We had a snack, then continued playing.  Luckily, I finished my book, so I was totally with them, not being distracted by wanting to have finished that thing.  We had lunch, then we all went down for a nap.  When we woke up, Peyton had to pee right away.  Today, she made it.  We went grocery shopping after that, and while the kids played with Legos, I started roasting veggies.  I roasted some kale chips and made a butternut squash/apple/cranberry dish, inspired by Bonnie’s last night.  I added walnuts, since I knew that was out of the question last night, since there were too many kids eating it.  Brandon LOVED it.  I also made polenta patties with Parmesan, but Peyton was okay with it.  Brandon loved this, too.  Peyton put it in her mouth, and said, “Oh, this is good,” nodding, then thought again, and said, “Oh, actually, it’s not that good.”  Brandon inhaled his, and took the half that Peyton hadn’t stuck in her mouth.  Oh well.  Can’t please them all.  Dave came home early, since he’d gone in early.  I thought he was taking the train, but it was on the holiday schedule, so he’d driven.  The kids were practicing hitting off a tee, which Dave had just brought home.  Here is some video I captured:

Video 2 (Brandon)

We were able to eat early, and even go out for fro-yo.  I left for the gym after the kids were down, which was about 715pm.  We have Peyton’s parent teacher conference tomorrow at 730am, which is perfect for us, since Dave will be able to go.  Just means that we have to get off to a slightly earlier start.

When I came home from the 5K that I’d run, Dave had made some spam musubi, again inspired by Bonnie.  We were intrigued by the turkey spam, so we tried one of those, and the “Lite Spam” trying to healthify it somehow.

While Peyton was falling asleep at nap, she was whispering, “Jeremy Lin.  Jeremy Lin.” I ignored her, wanting her to just go to sleep.  Later, while she was eating her green beans from last night, she said, “I’m eating my green beans, so I can get bigger and play basketball.”  While Dave was giving her her hug tonight, she told him, “Your hair moved from up there (pointing to his head) to your chin.”  Well said, Peyton, well said.

While waiting for the videos to upload, we were sent the assessment for Peyton for our conference tomorrow (it’s 9 pages!).  She did great, getting mostly 3’s (mastered), but I found this one particularly funny.  She got a 2 on “sorts by class e.g. animal, food, color”.  The comment was “hesitates when sorting animals by class, specifically sorting between farm and wild animals”.  I laughed, and immediately wanted to ship her to a farm.  Haha…Dave said we could send her to Missouri. It’s also not surprising that she is a bit shy in her class, but loves to learn!  Great job, Peyton!  Now Dave wants her to move to the next classroom and save us some more $.
