Exercise; Food, Part II

Today, after nap, we got up to head to the park on the kids’ bikes. Peyton is getting faster, and I have to walk at a quick pace to keep up with her. I was walking along with her in flip flops, and I felt rushed! She can mostly steer, but I worry about the slopes in the driveways causing her to tip over. She sometimes catches an edge or isn’t fully paying attention to the road, especially when it’s curvy. She doesn’t like it when I “touch the string” (it’s a stick on the back of her bike), and she wants to do things on her own. Brandon is getting much better on his bike, and definitely more stable. He can do laps on his own and even correct himself when he gets on grass. He hasn’t mastered peddling totally on grass, since he needs more muscle to do that, but he can come back onto the concrete should it happen. We don’t stand beside any longer, only watching from afar. When we got to the park, there was no one there, so it was nice to have the whole place to ourselves. Then a few people with a some dogs came, and Peyton was fascinated by that. She played a bit on the structure, but Brandon was too content on his bike. After awhile, Peyton declared she was headed home. Brandon and Dave followed her, then passed her, and she was determined to catch up. When we got home, we loaded the kids in the car for a grocery trip.
While we were at TJ’s, I wanted to get something we could make today. Dave was going to make beer can chicken, but it was going to take a little longer. So I asked Brandon if he wanted a portabella mushroom sandwich. Becca made me one when I visited her in Boston many years ago, and I really haven’t tried it again. It was meaty, and very much like a hamburger, and I know Brandon likes mushrooms. He agreed, and Dave got that grilling when we got home. I cut up more tomato for myself, and since it was nice and crunchy, not overly ripe, I asked her if she wanted to try it. Surprisingly, she took a bite of that, too! I gave her the whole slice and she nibbled away at it. Amazing! She’s never liked tomato before; even last night, I had to pick it out of her wrap. They do say to keep trying foods over and over as you never know when the kid will suddenly have a change of heart. The rest of the meal consisted of green beans and/or asparagus. The kids started out with green beans, but later, Brandon asked if he could have asparagus, too. This prompted Peyton to ask for one as well. I have always enjoyed watching Brandon eat. His sense of adventure with food is very exciting, especially since it’s mostly healthy stuff that he is eating and enjoys. He is also indirectly encouraging Peyton to eat more of a variety of food, too, since he is appealing to her more competitive and curious side. Brandon was so full of veggies, he didn’t ask for dessert. Peyton asked for some mango, and luckily, we had one left. I’m surprised she remembered.
