Packed Friday

This morning, Dave took Peyton while I took Brandon to school. They were having a volunteer recognition breakfast, so I took Brandon to CDC. I ran into Mina and chatted with her about Dave’s involvement in the grant-writing arena as well as his pet project, Science night. The volunteer recognition program started by thanking some of the key volunteers. I took the time to eat my bagel and fruit. I also loaded up on coffee since I’d be heading over to Peyton’s school for their field trip. It ended right on time, and I rushed over to Peyton’s school. The other parents were already there, but I’d told the teacher yesterday that I’d be running late. I was assigned my three girls, but one of the girl’s mom was there, as her personal chaperone. She was going to drive the girl and hang out still in our group. So, I only had A and Peyton. A is one of the teacher’s kids, and I believe Peyton’s newest Frenemy. She is there in the morning, and older than Peyton, so she bosses her around. Fortunately, I knew her, so I didn’t have to learn a new face. But I was worried because she is a teacher’s kid! I asked the girls who wanted to sit by the window on the way over. Peyton immediately raised her hand. That meant A could ride beside the window on the way back. Peyton was telling her as we passed by work, “A, that’s where I was born!” Then she was telling her, “A, do you know my brother’s name?” A said, “NO.” Peyton said, “His name is Brandon.” She was so proud! The girls did have some things in common, like the love of Ariel and Disney. Both girls were singing “Part of your world”, and it seemed trying to outdo each other. Then A started singing the chorus to “It’s a Small World” and then I beamed internally when Peyton let her finish and then started in with, “There is just one moon and one golden sun, and a smile means…” I had to help her with the rest, but she picked up right along with me. A didn’t seem happy about it.
We arrived and then had to wait until we got checked in. They waited such a long time, and to help, they were given goldfish and graham crackers. Of course, then they needed water (this is like “If you give a pig a pancake”). We headed out, and it turns out one kid liked thrills and another was quite chicken. Peyton told me, “Miss Christine can’t go on the roller coaster because she has a baby in her tummy.” I asked her what about her. She said, “I can’t go on the roller coaster because I’m scared.” Straight up. So my plan was to give Peyton to Miss Christine while I took A on the roller coaster, but the line was very long, and if I stayed there in line, I’d miss out on all the time with Peyton. K and her mom met up with us, and she suggested that we hang out as a small group. With that, we headed out in search of rides. We started with a “thrill” for A, so I waited in line with her, while the other mom took Peyton to the lady bugs. After the frogs, we went to go find Peyton and K. I had a mini panic attack when I didn’t see Peyton over by the lady bugs, given I’d just met this mom today! I calmed down when I saw them by the swings line. They were just getting on, so A and I waited at the back of the line. After the girls were done, they came around and went in with us. We were strategizing where to go next, and K and Peyton wanted to go to the Putt Putt cars, but A wanted to go to the roller coaster. The three girls had a good time, sitting behind one another, 3 in a row. We went to the Putt Putt car line, and A was whining about the roller coaster. We convinced her that she could make a lot of noise with the bell on the fire truck. She agreed. The girls waited patiently in line. While we were in line, Peyton told me she had to go potty. So, I quickly took her while K’s mom watched A. We got back quickly, and we were the next group. and when it was their turn, I told them “You get what you get and don’t throw a fit.” Fortunately, they all got what they wanted. Peyton and K wanted the blue police cars, and A was in the fire truck. After that, we had to go to lunch. We set up camp, and I got their lunches out of my backpack. The other mom bought fries and her own food, and she told the girls to help themselves. This violates one of the rules for chaperones. They aren’t supposed to buy something and not give it to everyone, as it isn’t fair. But also, they aren’t supposed to share food in the event of allergies. In any case, I turned a blind eye, as Peyton was grabbing the fries like the other girls. I convinced her to eat her sandwich, but she started eating her chips, like the other girls. After half the chips were gone, I took the chips away, and told her to finish up the rest of her growing food. I’d gotten water for Peyton and me, while A wanted to drink her juice. Peyton declined the juice, not even discussing it! She just told me, “I don’t want it.” She slowly ate her sandwich, then got the rest of her chips and then the fruit cup. I just ate the sandwich, and I left both the chips and fruit. I was happy that I was able to resist the empty calories for today at least. I did bring them both home 🙂 Peyton kept on eating fries, and finally, I gave her my evil eyeball, and a quick nod. She pushed them away, and even told A not to eat them either. A said, “But I want them!” I told Peyton to let it go, and that she didn’t need anymore. She complied! I took her for another run to the potty, then I took A. K didn’t need to go. After lunch, it was time to head back to the bus. A still complained that we didn’t get to go to the carousel or the roller coaster. Those were two of the longest lines in the park! I did tell her that, and she seemed to understand. I told Ms Christine that we didn’t get to go on the roller coaster. She said that she would hear about it from the other teacher. We talked briefly about that interesting dynamic, and I hoped that wouldn’t get back to ME. Dave told me that A’s mom was excited to tell him that A couldn’t wait for Peyton to arrive this morning because they were in the same group. Maybe they do like each other. Frenemy, I tell you.
So, A got to ride back by the window, and I let Peyton sit next to her, but Peyton was being a snot, and was sitting behind A’s space. I moved her to the aisle, then she put up a fuss, so I tried it again. She did better at sitting properly, and two girls finished up their conversation about princesses and singing. We took turns counting to 30, and I managed to keep them entertained and awake for the ride back. When we got back, I helped the girls take off their shirts, while Peyton went to get a drink of water, then potty. I even got to tuck her in her nap area, and she didn’t fight at all. She laid down with a smile and looked as if she’d fall asleep right there and then. I headed to work to put in a few hours to make my life easier next week. I wanted her to nap there versus taking her home and dealing with her falling asleep in the car. I got a few hours in then headed home. While at work, I was starving, and told Julie that it was a Sweet Tomatoes type day. Dave had called me to tell me that Brandon had pinched his friend at school, and earned a red card. That meant Brandon was NOT able to go with us. I decided to take Peyton instead since she’d done a good job on the field trip. We went home, went potty, then turned around to head back out. Brandon was told to help Dave wash the car, and he was very solemn and just waved goodbye as we backed out to go to his favorite restaurant. The Chang’s beat us there, but we were able to eat dinner mostly with them, with the exception of the potty breaks that is Peyton’s nighttime eating routine. We headed home by 730pm, and when we came through the door, it was quiet. Brandon was already asleep, so I quietly gave Peyton a bath. We read one book, and then she was told to go to sleep. She didn’t poop in the restaurant, but ended up getting up again to do so. She did have a legit poop, so it wasn’t just an excuse. After that, she didn’t come out again.
One thing that was funny in the car is that when I’m not talking, and she’s not talking and it’s just the two of us, she will comment, “Mommy, it’s so quiet in the car.” This is totally not the case any time Brandon is in the car.
