Playdate for the Young and Old

This morning, we had arranged a playdate with Rohan and his sister. We met at the park at 1030am, and our kids were off to play at the swings and then the kiddie area. Rohan, Meagan and their mom showed up about 5 minutes later. Meagan preferred to play with the boys while Peyton wanted to play with the bubble she’d brought. They didn’t work so well, but she was happy to try. Meagan is only a year younger than Rohan, so she is closer to the boys’ age than Peyton. We moved to another structure closer to the shade, and the kids all had fun playing there. They moved on to soccer, and even made another friend in the process. We took a break for a snack – cheese, Pirates booty and an Oreo. Then soccer resumed, and Peyton took a ball in the face. We’re not exactly sure she was hit or just stunned. Rohan’s mom thought Rohan did it, and let out a little scream, but it was actually Brandon. Peyton was a trooper, and I was prepared for an accident, with an ice pack in our snacks. She did not cry, and I think she was happy to not have too much attention paid to her. She re-joined the group, and then it was time for us to leave. We wanted to get back before the adult playdate started later in the afternoon. We fed the kids a quick lunch, then headed them up for naps. Brandon laid down for a bit, and Peyton slept within 5 minutes. Mike and Yunhee came over about 30 minutes later, having driven from down south.  They made good time, and we caught up while the kids were resting/napping.  Brandon came down first, and wanted to watch the baseball game with us and chat.  Later, Peyton came down, but she was her usual self.  We had a late lunch/early dinner, and both kids weren’t really that hungry.  They chose to play on their own – Brandon with legos and Peyton with puzzles.  Both kept themselves entertained in the living room for about over an hour!  Peyton decided she wanted a sweet potato, but she was too shy to eat it in front of everyone, since we were all done.  I noticed she was just picking at it, even though she’d asked me for it.  So I asked her if she wanted to eat it in the kitchen, and she nodded.  She came back to her puzzles just 5 minutes later, having finished all her potato.

After she was done, we cleaned up that area, then headed to the family room.  The kids then got their individual guest to play with.  Peyton had now warmed up to Uncle Mike and was dancing and singing with him, while Brandon was talking Yunhee’s ear off. Good thing she has a nephew who is 2 years younger than Brandon and is very tolerant.  They were playing with more legos.  Peyton was singing “Call Me Maybe,” “Starships”, and “Fireworks” while dancing and being silly.  Mike and Yunhee said goodbye right in time to get the kids off to bed, around 7pm.  They were in bed by 730pm, with no complaints.  Since Brandon hadn’t slept, it didn’t take him long to fall asleep, and Peyton only slept for about an hour, so she, too, fell asleep quickly.  Now, we’re just winding down and getting ready to start another fun-filled summer week!

While saying good night to Peyton, Dave asked her who she loved more.  She said, “I love Mommy, because you love Brother.”  Dave started to pretend to cry, then I told Peyton she could love both of us.  She thought about it, then said, “Daddy, I love you, actually.”  She was trying to make him feel better, and after a few more “I love you, actually,”‘s, he stopped crying and gave her a hug.  I just laughed that she used the word “actually”.
