Friday Funday

Today, I woke up and thought to keep Peyton home. I figured it’d save me the running back and forth to her school to get her in between taking Brandon to school, since we were headed up to my mom’s after for my grandma’s birthday. So, I asked her if she wanted to stay home with me, and of course, she did! So we went to Brandon’s school and he and Theo were talking together on the new bench area. Peyton first sat next to Theo who didn’t pay any attention to her, then she switched sides to be closer to Brandon. Since it’s made of concrete, I was a little worried for her safety, so I changed sides to spot her. Brandon turned to another girl who was standing on the ledge with her father close by, “You know you’re not supposed to stand on that!” Brandon is enforcing the laws! The dad made note, acknowledged him, and the daughter got down. Maybe he has a career in law enforcement 😉 So, we watched him line up and then followed the class to flag salute. He sat nicely through flag salute, while Peyton was more fidgety. After they were done and walking back to the class, we tried to say bye to him, but he quickly waved, ducked his head, and walked away. He looked like he was shooing us away!! So, we headed to the Farmer’s market to pick up some flowers, but instead ended up buying plums, pluots, apples and grapes. Peyton enjoyed trying all of them, and some watermelon, too. We left here to go to the library. I picked up some non-fiction books on bugs for Brandon, and another Flat Stanley book for Peyton. We then went to pick up a present for my grandma (some K-cups since my mom bought her the machine), and then back across town to pick up Peyton’s artwork that we painted. She was so excited to see it and wanted to hold it with her in the backseat. I told her to be careful since it was breakable. Finally, we went back home, had lunch, then off to pick Brandon up. Brandon was very excited to be going to see my mom. One of Peyton’s games that we played in the car all morning while in transit were “Disney Riddles”. Instead of “talking” about the rides, I would give her clues about rides, and she’d have to guess the ride based on the clues. She wanted me to keep giving her ride after ride all morning long. After we had Brandon, it was much easier, and I just had the two of them play together. One of Peyton’s turns was hilarious. It was early on, so Brandon was still getting used to the game, as was Peyton. It went a bit like this:
P: Okay, it’s a show, not a ride.
B: Okay
P: The man is dressed all in black.
B: Okay.
P: And it starts with a D. In Disneyland.
B: I dunno.
P: And it’s a lidbit scary. But not too scary.
B: Hmm….

B: (Giving it some thought) Darth Maul?
P: I’m not telling you.
B: Oh Darth Vader?
Me: Jedi training academy?
P: I’m not telling! You have to guess.
At this point, I had to tell Peyton if Brandon guesses it right, she has to tell him. She’d only been guessing earlier on today, so she was new to the clue-giving. Peyton told Brandon that we’d gotten my grandma a birthday present. Brandon said, “Oh, an iPad?” I had to tell him no, it wasn’t an iPad. He wasn’t so impressed with coffee (my grandma likes food gifts, not “stuff”, so we oblige).
When we got up to my parents’ house, my mom had already arrived into town. The kids were excited to see her, and then my grandma arrived shortly thereafter. They had food, so the kids were even more excited! I told them they had to eat their lunches first, and then they could have what my grandma had brought (bao). They scarfed down their food, then Peyton had a bite of bao, and Brandon ate half a sesame ball. I told Peyton she could read the Flat Stanley book after nap, and she could go sleep in Brandon’s room. She thought I was going to go down with her, but I told her to go alone. And she did! She did come back and ask for the music. I turned on the noise machine, and turned around, shut the door, and walked away. That’s all I had to do. My grandma was surprised when I came back. “That’s it?”
“That’s it.” We all went back downstairs afterward to play MJ, and I checked on her. She was curled up with a pillow and her stuffed animals and was asleep. It was 130pm or so by that time, so past her naptime, but it was quite easy. Brandon was kept quiet during her naptime with all the books I’d gotten. After he was bored with that, he moved onto the ipad. Peyton woke up after about an hour, and joined me at the table. She was my good luck charm, and sat quietly as she was still tired and groggy. Later, she joined Brandon, and followed him wherever he was. Whenever he’d move to a different spot on the couch, she’d creep over next to him. She’d do it subtly, but we still noticed. The kids made it to the 7pm dinnertime! I was amazed, since I’d only given them a little snack after lunch. Brandon’s eyes were glazed over, waiting for food. They both did well, and after dinner, they each had a mango pudding. Peyton was savoring it, taking miniscule bits, while Brandon wolfed his down. Peyton didn’t finish, and I’m not sure if it was because we were telling her we were leaving or if she was truly full. I’m sure it was a bit of both. We were to go back to the house and have cake, too, but since the kids already had dessert, they agreed not to have more. They had greek yogurt instead, a compromise of sorts. They bathed and brushed their teeth, then stayed up longer than their usual bedtimes – until 10pm – to hang out with the family. Dave had been concerned that we were staying up so late, since he hadn’t thought I’d thought ahead to bring clothes. I’d surprised him by thinking ahead and had both kids’ changes of clothes. We had a bit of trauma to Peyton’s finger when she got it caught between two matchbox cars and their contraption that Brandon and she had built. A little blood was involved, but she was screaming her head off. I think it being so late had a lot to do with it, and the fact that she dislikes seeing her own blood. Everyone heard her, and while I was getting her a bandage, my dad picked her up and kissed her finger. She stopped crying, but was still had some residual sobbing. The bandage seemed to make everything better, but she protected the finger (her left ring finger) by putting her shoe on with her right hand only. Hopefully she’ll forget about it by tomorrow. Sure enough, both kids were asleep on the drive home. We went to get Dave’s car at the train station, and Brandon walked himself into the house while Peyton was transferred successfully in her sleep. Tomorrow swimming resumes! Too bad it’s been so chilly recently.
