Camping!!

We started out with camping with half of the Kao’s and it grew to a camping party!  We added the Brown’s, then the other half of the Kao’s, Theresa and Martin, and then this week, Kathy’s family.  In total, we had 18 of us, and it was great.  We all started out about midday on Saturday.  The drive was a bit windy, so we had to take our time getting there.  Both kids took a needed nap in the car.  We were the first to arrive, then the Brown’s and Theresa and Martin came together, meeting up in the lodge.  The Kao’s then Kathy’s family followed.  Everyone got busy putting their stuff up, then Dave started the fire to get some food ready.  The kids wanted a snack, so Bonnie had some popcorn, veggies straws and pretzels.  All the kids were happy to sit and eat.  Each family brought chairs, and it seemed a meeting of the minds at times.  The kids all had fun with one another or another or another.  They all seemed to switch around with another, and I was trying to follow Peyton around, as Brandon was pretty content with Ian.  Peyton wanted to play with the older boys, then switched boys and played with Connor and the rocks.  he kids had a rock collection going in the shed and Connor among other kids was fascinated with it.  Had I not known the kids had put the rocks in there, I would have thought there was some ancient tribal thing or as Stuart and I thought, maybe Blair Witch.  We had a great dinner – with tons of food!  There were sausages, chicken skewers (which were a great hit), green beans, asparagus, tomatoes, grilled asparagus, and steak.  We had fruit, Hawaiian bread and buns for the dogs.  Peyton had a dog and some green beans, and within a few minutes, asked me for another hot dog.  I asked her where her first hot dog was, and she didn’t answer.  I thought it was on the ground, so  I looked, and it wasn’t there.  I then asked, “Did you eat it already?” She nodded, and I offered her a chicken skewer instead.  She agreed, and ate the whole thing, too.    It seemed to get dark quickly, and with darkness, came s’mores.  Brandon had eaten some gummies bears earlier and chose that as his dessert, while the rest of the kids ate s’mores.  We had to make all the s’mores first before distributing it to the kids to make it fair.  They were all eagerly awaiting their dessert. I told Peyton she didn’t have to eat it all, and she said, “Yes, I do.”  She worked on it for awhile, and at the rate that she was eating, she’d finish it up by Sunday.  Turns out, she just at about half of it, then said she was done.  I was proud that she didn’t stuff the whole thing in her mouth just to make a point.  We all had the kids say good night to each other then headed to brush their teeth and change their clothes.  Though we had Peyton in a diaper, I offered her another book if she kept her diaper dry.  She accepted the challenge.  At first, I thought I could just leave the kids in the tent, then Dave and I headed back to the campfire, but all we kept hearing was them fighting and tattling on each other.  I went over several times to shush them, and Peyton told me once, “I don’t like camping.”  I ignored her as she did not have a choice at that point in time, since we were there to stay overnight.  Finally, Dave went in to calm them down and wait with them to fall asleep, but we kept hearing talking.  Bonnie, Kathy, Michelle, Ted, Theresa and Martin were all out chatting after the kids went to sleep.  Ours were the last ones asleep!  Stuart stayed in with his boys, while Christian and Ian were playing chess inside with Kira sleeping.  Dave came back, and I thought that meant that they were asleep, but it turns out he wanted relief.  So I tagged him out, and the kids were both winding down.  I stroked Peyton’s forehead as her eyes were very tired, and doing so made her close them.  I think she was a bit frightened, so at times her eyes were WIDE open.  She told me again, “I don’t like camping.”  I didn’t want to talk about it, so again, I ignored her.  Brandon fell asleep within me being there 5 minutes.  After another 10 or so of patting Peyton and trying to get her to sleep, I started to make my escape.  She heard the zipper and looked at me.  I told her I’d be going back to the fire, and she needed to go to sleep. I told him to ask Daddy, and he said, “Daddy’s not here.”  What!  How’d I miss him getting out of the tent?  Dave heard Brandon, so he came back to get him.  He put his clothes back on and took him.  Peyton was awake, but she wanted to climb in my warn sleeping back.  Her nose was all red and cold and her feet were like ice blocks.  I could feel her feet through my two bottom layers!  After I warmed her up a bit, we got out, too.  We went to find Dave, then we headed to the potty.  She’d kept her diaper dry!  I had to go potty, even though she said she didn’t have to go.  I took her anyway, and even after I went, she said, “Wow, Mommy, that’s a lot of pee.”  I’d held it through the night, since I didn’t want to go out alone either.  Peyton still didn’t go, but I picked her up and held her up to go anyway.  She did, and a lot.  I just think she didn’t want to take her pants off and be cold.  We washed up, then headed back to camp.  Dave wanted to start cooking, but Theresa had put the food away in their car and they were the last ones up.  They also don’t have kids and probably aren’t used to waking up that early (it was about 730am, so actually, great for us!).  They couldn’t help but wake up since the kids were mostly up by then.  Peyton and Brandon each got a cup of hot cocoa since those supplies were out.  But soon enough, we had a feast round #2.  We had eggs, bacon, bread or croissant, and leftover steak and dogs.  There was so much food, we didn’t even get to the pancakes.  There were two things I’d seen/had for the first time – gigantic marshmallows – like twice or three times a normal one, and mint chocolate marshmallows.   The mint ones went in my mocha, and it was very subtle, but tasty.  After we cleaned up the tents and food prep stuff, the kids played some more, then it was time to head out.  We started our drive, and Peyton was asleep first. Brandon must have been feeling car sick, since he was getting snappy, and soon fell asleep.  Both kids slept while we unloaded part of the car, then Brandon got out, and we told him to take a bath.  He snapped again, “I just want to go to sleep!”  Can’t argue with that, so he did.  Crawled right into his bed.  Peyton I took out, and stripped off one layer, since she was like Pigpen on the peanuts.  She woke up but only briefly, before going right back to sleep.  Both kids were out for the next two hours, before waking up around the same time.  In that time, we showered, got our stuff put away and did laundry.  Very productive since they were sleeping.  I will be going out with Tracy tonight for dinner, while Dave is now out with the kids for dinner.  Here are the pictures we took:
