Trick Or Treat

Dave headed to Peyton’s classroom this afternoon to see her parade. I stayed at work, since I wanted to leave early to get the kids ready for trick or treating later tonight. He was complaining about the parents not listening, the chaos and the parade starting late, since he’d come there on time. We got home around the same time, when I had Brandon doing his 20 minutes of reading. He said he’d already done some math at CDC, though I didn’t think it’d take him 10 minutes to do the worksheet that he had. Dave carved two pumpkins while Peyton watched. We quickly changed the kids, then headed to get pizza before heading out. We were told about this section of street that is all festive and the majority of the houses are all decked out. We parked here and walked around, but found it was too crowded. One house was too festive, and Peyton was whining, “It’s scary! I don’t want to go up there.” We were log jammed, and the street was busy with cars, so after a few house of jostling, we decided to head home. We’d left our candy on the porch, but the light had burned out, so people weren’t coming up the steps to our candy basket. We quickly parked and headed out on foot. It was less congested in our area, and we went back to our same neighbors. We did a similar loop that we’ve done in the past. We’d practiced the “Trick or treat” and “Happy Halloween” and the most important, “Thank you.” This was our first year of two kids and no stroller. Peyton did fine walking around, and in her slip ons and not tennis shoes, since they matched with her outfit better. She did want to hold Brandon’s hand or at least make sure he was close by.  At one point, we went to a house that had a real candle in the jack-o-lantern, and we called out to tell Peyton to be careful, since her outer wear was loose and highly flammable.  Brandon whispered, “Stand behind me,” and she walked away from the pumpkin and stood to the other side of him.  Some houses she was too scared to go without Brandon.  We wanted to hear the kids’ “Thank yous” from the street, so they said it loudly enough for us to hear it from the sidewalk. They were being a bit too quiet, so we had them turn up the volume. They went together in our neighborhood, alternating houses for the door bell ring. We had to keep track for them to keep it fair. After making a small circle, we headed home by 730pm. Each kid rummaged around for one candy. Brandon picked junior mints, while Peyton had a dum dum. They both enjoyed it, then they both picked 4 more things to keep, and then the rest of the candy will go to donations. We then had both kids bathed, then brushed, and plopped into bed. Peyton remembered her card from last night. (In fact, this morning, when Dave said good morning to her, she immediately said, “Where’s my card? I stayed in my own room and did not come out.”) Both came out once so far, and both lost one card. It’s been a hectic day. And I can’t believe tomorrow is November already. Phew. We are in the throes of the holiday season already!!

Dave and I looked through the rest of the candy, and we found chan pui mui!  Needless to say, the kids didn’t pick this as their go-to choices.  We also found some digestive biscuits.  Definitely an eclectic booty.  We also visited our favorite old neighborly couple who each year invite the whole family in for hot cider, fruit, pretzels, cheese/crackers, and of course candy.  They even offer the adults champagne.  When we were there, there was already another family enjoying cider on the couch.  Two years ago, the couple was watching the Giants game.  This year, it was Jeopardy.  The girl on the couch said, “Hi Brandon,” when Brandon got in the door.  Her dad asked her if they go to school together, but she said, “No, CDC.”  Brandon was again very shy, and just said hello.  The kids thanked the nice couple and we headed out, leaving the girl, her brother, and dad on the couch still sipping away.  We feel badly staying, but they are very hospitable!
