We took care of some errands the morning of Brandon’s party.  Namely, we got a cake and some bags to stuff the party favors.  The ones I’d gotten were too small to fit the stuff we ended up getting.  Brandon helped stuff the bags, then we headed out.  Peyton was perfectly happy having her own pizza party with Grandma.  We got to the restaurant and started putting some balloons up on the chairs.  The Kong’s arrived shortly after, and we got to chat with them a bit before Nico and Craig arrived.  Soon, Joshua’s mom dropped him off, then Liam and his dad arrived.  We were all present and accounted for.  The kids all gravitated toward one another, sitting at one end of the table.  Brandon was a bit surprised I think at first to see people he knew outside of context, even though he knew they’d be there for him.  It didn’t take long for the 5 older boys to warm up to one another.  The common denominator was Brandon, otherwise, the other boys didn’t know each other.  I’d tried to invite friends in pairs so they’d all have one other person they’d know, but it didn’t work out.  We knew all the parents except Liam’s dad, but he quickly introduced himself.  The adults chatted together, while the boys talked about whatever it is boys talk about.  Roy, our resident 2 year old, hung out with his parents.  After we ordered, there was a little bit of a lull, and some talk of spit balls and straw-playing, so we broke out the party favors – Star Wars-themed candy dispensers, which were zip-tied to avoid getting into the candy, finger skateboards, a mini kite, and a mustache.  I’d gotten them, but Dave didn’t understand why. I just had it in my mind that it would make for great pictures!  Once the food came, the boys all started eating.  Brandon ordered grilled cheese which came with chips, applesauce, and milk.  Each meal came with ice cream as well.  We were running short on time, which was kind of hard to believe.  We got the ice cream distributed, and then Dave went to go put the gifts and cake back in the car.  The boys didn’t know that they were missing cake, but they were excited about the movie.  We walked the short distance to the IMAX theater, and they all went in while I went to get one more ticket for myself.  When I got back to the theater, it was dark by then.  Luckily, I’d seen Dave’s face illuminated by his phone, then headed up in the general direction.  I stopped when I saw Dave K’s glow in the dark orange shoe laces.  The movie started shortly after that.  When the screen lit up, I could see all of the kids in a row.  Dave said that there was some more jostling for seats next to Brandon.  The kids were all leaned back in their chairs, eyes trained on the movie.  It was so great to see, and I wish I’d had a picture of them all sitting so nicely!  The movie was a bit motion-sickness inducing, so I closed my eyes during more than one part of the movie. I was happy the kids were happy and seated.  The last five minutes were a bit dicey, with more chair-rocking, but they stayed put in the chairs.  After the movie, one boy asked, “Is the party over?”  We were asked to exit up the theater, which put us right in the middle of the museum.  It’s like the rides dumping you into the middle of a store to exit.  Sneaky.  The kids said their goodbyes to those leaving straight from the theater, while three of us took three kids back to the restaurant.  We took Joshua home, and as soon as they got into the car, they both started reading magazines.  Brandon had warned Joshua to not scream in the car, otherwise Dave wouldn’t be able to drive.  Joshua was very quiet.  We got home, and the house was quiet.  I thought that Peyton may be sleeping, but I heard her call out from the spare room, “I’m over here, Mommy!”  She was curled up in her jammies, lounging around after her nap.  My mom and she were reading.  We brought out the cake for Brandon, sang, and then had a piece.  Then, my mom and I took off to the spa.  It was well-deserved, given Dave would be headed out of town.  It was my v-day present 🙂  Actually, it was a gift from my co-workers almost 7 years ago.  I’d never used it for worry about getting called from school for one kid, then another.  I couldn’t relax ever if the kids were in school, and I wouldn’t want to be interrupted, so I never went.  Now that Dave was with them, I had no qualms about leaving and truly relaxing.  I’d gotten my mom a gift certificate awhile back, too, so she could come along with me!  We left around 6pm, and didn’t get back until almost 10 pm.  That pushed things back to get ready for school, but Dave had mostly gotten that together.

This morning, we all headed out, and Dave gave Brandon some big hugs, and told each kid separately that they were the master of the house.  My mom picked Brandon up early from CDC so he could get some homework done.  I got Peyton, and then headed to TJ’s to put together a lasagne (I ran out of time yesterday).  She got to try one that they had at TJ’s, and told my mom, “I had some masagne.”  Both kids call my mom “Daddy”, since they aren’t used to having her around at dinnertime.  I called Dave right before bedtime, and Brandon told him that he’d already given him 5 hugs this morning, one for each night he was gone (it’s actually only 4 needed), so he didn’t need a hug tonight.  Both kids are up later tonight, despite me putting them down at 715pm. It’s about 8 pm, and I just finished up with the lasagne for tomorrow.  Brandon asked my mom to pick him up from CDC again today.  I think maybe he has it in his mind that they will do what they did today – take a walk to the coffee store for a parfait.  My mom said he picked the same thing Peyton did.  He also told my mom that they had to get something for Peyton!  She had to tell him that this was making up from when Peyton went with her when she stayed home when she was sick.  Brandon hadn’t known about it, and Peyton hadn’t gotten him anything.  Brandon has always been our sharer, and it’s nice that he was thinking about his sister.
