Weekend at Grandma’s and Papa’s

Friday night, we got home and my mom told us they were leaving to tailgate at 8am.  The game wasn’t until 1230pm!  Die hard.  We had a few errands to run before coming up.  One of which was to drop off Julie’s birthday present to her.  Since we weren’t going to be able to make her shindig, and I wasn’t able to prep everything before work that day, we stopped by Friday around 8pm.  I told Brandon we’d be going to Auntie Julie’s, and then he asked, “To see Copter?”  I told him yes, we’d see Copter, and then I started in about how he had to be gentle.  Then I asked him who Copter’s daddy was.  He had this furrowed brow (his slightly mean face), and said, “Rrrrobert!”  He didn’t just say, “Robert”, he said, “Rrrrobert!”  At least he knew the right answer.
So after a quick visit there, with Brandon chasing and then being chased by Copter, and worried that Copter was going to do something with our shoes, we left for the drive up to my Dad’s.  We were making the drive up there, so that the morning wouldn’t be as hectic and we’d be at least half way there.  Even better was that Brandon wanted to sleep with my parents!  Yay (or so I thought, since I hadn’t accounted for the David snore-factor).  In any case, I didn’t have to worry about being kicked all night long, just woken up by some rather loud snoring.
So we set out to the tailgate; we were supposed to meet my aunt at 8am, but didn’t end up leaving until about that time.  Luckily it didn’t take us that long to get there, and we were only about 15 minutes late in meeting her.  So we drove up, and got all set up for the tailgate.  Now it was a mixed crowd, with most cheering for the other team, but it was all in good fun.  The sausages were all ready to go after about an hour – but it was kinda weird eating them at 10am.  One of my dad’s friends there was talking about how my cousin (who is 2 months older than Brandon) and aunt were not able to go out to dinner a few nights before because he was so misbehaved!  I was a little worried how Brandon would do all day long since the game was right during naptime.  Turns out he had a great time tailgating (his first time ever).  When it was time to walk up to the stadium, we had a steep climb ahead.  I’m fine walking on flat surfaces, but I feel the extra 20+ pounds on me when climbing hills.  My mom flagged down one of the shuttle golf carts; she found one that was empty (she had asked a few others, some carrying older, patrons – I wasn’t that bad off that I felt the need to displace some old guy with a walker, despite my mom’s pleas to get me a ride).  So all of us piled in; Brandon was going to take the middle seat facing the rear, with my aunt and I on either side of him.  I thought better of it, and plopped him in my lap.  My mom rode shotgun.  It was only a few hundred feet to the top of the hill, as we had walked most of it.  As soon as the driver stepped on the pedal and we started to move, Brandon freaked out.  Totally lost it!!  He gave us one of the “freeway screams” and started flipping around to bury his head into my shoulder.  He was so loud, he scared the driver, who stopped immediately (she must have thought he had fallen out or something).  He stopped when she stopped the cart; she turned around and apologized to him.  I told her it was ok, and I told him the same.  I held onto him tightly as she continued on our way.  Again, Brandon totally lost it, crying and making the worst terror noises.  We finally got to the top, and he was clutching onto me for dear life.  We had passed Dave on the way up, and he heard all the commotion.

We found our seats, and had just made it in time for kickoff.  The sun was beating down on us; it was unseasonably warm for an October game.  One comment from the stands was, “This would have been a great day for a night game.”  That was an understatement.  Brandon fell asleep somewhere around mid-first quarter, but just couldn’t get comfortable.  He didn’t last very long, waking up right before half time.  I was a little worried he was going to get heatstroke, since he wasn’t drinking that much water (like he normally does).  I had to force him to drink his water; his poor cheeks were turning pink.  We tried to cover him up with a golf towel while he slept, which worked for a little while.  Later in the game, there was a breeze, which cooled things off a little bit, but it was still hot.  After the game (a loss for us), we headed over to my grandma’s house to celebrate her birthday.  My uncle had come up from Long Beach; he was supposed to come for her real birthday in September, but had some work being done on his house and wasn’t able.  So he wanted to treat her to a birthday dinner with all of us.  We haven’t seen Jeffrey, Kimberlee and Gregory in awhile now, so it was nice to have a chance to see them.  Brandon had fallen asleep on the way over, so I carried him up, but once we got inside, he quickly “recovered” and got into the mix seeing his “aunts” and “uncles”.  I say this loosely as they are only a few years older than him.  It’s funny seeing the two two-year-olds together, almost like they size each other up.  Gregory isn’t talking much yet, he’s kind of hard to understand, but has funny facial expressions.  After Brandon changed into dinner clothes, Gregory saw him in the hallway and stopped.  He first looked at Brandon’s clothes, then looked at his own clothes and realized they were dressed alike.  Brandon kept following Kimberlee around like her little shadow.  She was annoyed when she was changing and he continued to follow her.  What 5 year old wants a 2 year old watching her change.  She was worried Brandon would see her underwear.  Poor Baby didn’t even know what the big idea was.  He was very sweet also when he continuously followed Gregory around to return his “Sarge” car.  Gregory would play with it for a little while, drop it, then Brandon would pick it up, hold his hand out, and wait for him to take it.  Then he’d look up at me and try to get an approving look.  This is something that he’s doing more of now, especially this weekend.  It’s like he’s waiting to get a positive reaction, or giving me a “Is this ok?” look.  He also does it when he’s about to do something that he knows is probably not a good idea.  He’s responding to my looks now, so I don’t even have to say anything, and he knows it’s a bad idea and shouldn’t.  He behaved well at dinner (again, I was worried since he hadn’t slept much during the day).  After he was all done with dinner, he said he was cold.  He didn’t feel cold, but I think he was just tired and done eating.  I was still worried if was going to come down with something since he had had the flu shot only two days before.  Also since he was in the sun all day long, but it turned out he was fine.
We ended up going back to my grandma’s after dinner; the grown-ups played MJ, while the kids watched reality kid TV and played together.  It was fun watching them; Brandon started picking up Gregory’s “gibberish”, which I wasn’t too thrilled about.  I would just look at Brandon and tell him I couldn’t understand him, then he’d correct his language.
We all slept over my mom’s again on Saturday night, since it was so late by the time we got there.  Brandon slept with us, but it was not fitful since he was fast asleep.  He went upstairs to my parents’ room (well, actually, he got stuck half way, like he was lost, and just started crying).  I had to get up and show him the rest of the way there.  Dave and I got to watch Iron Man and the 4th installment of the Indy Jones series.  It had been awhile since we’d seen any movies.  It was a nice weekend for Brandon to hang out with the grandparents.  Only 3 more work days, then off to D-land!!!
