Volunteerism

Dave got to take a day off work to go volunteer. He was able to take both kids to school, then headed up to the food bank to do some manual labor. He was really enjoying, and he treated it like a game, to get things done as quickly and as efficiently as possible. I think that’s what we DO have in common, as I would try to make something mundane “fun” by making a game out of it. They were packaging food boxes for seniors, so definitely a worthy cause. Unfortunately, due to insurance issues, the place won’t accept kids until they are 14 years old. Both Dave and I agree that the kids should be involved in the community efforts, but picking up trash on the side of the road is a bit dangerous. We’re even willing to forgo the insurance issues for them to do this stuff, but the company won’t allow. He came home after his 5 hours of service, and then picked Brandon up for some baseball practice. Brandon is going to be playing on a tournament team this summer, so Dave’s getting him ready for that. It happens to be on the same weekend I’m planning a baby shower, so at least the boys will have something to do. Since it’s at our house, we may be able to go see a few games after the party is done. It’s specifically for ages 7 and below, so Coach Tom, Hana, Dave and Brandon will be reunited.
Peyton and I got home, and saw Dave’s car. We thought they got home already, but it turns out that they had walked. So, we headed out on foot, too. Peyton was so excited, so was running! I had to jog to keep up with her, and I’d already run 3 miles at lunchtime. As soon as we turned the corner, Brandon and Dave were headed back. But since we had just gotten there, they turned around. We played a bit, but were scared off by this dirty little boy. He wasn’t being watched very well and kept offering us this nasty piece of chocolate that was all over his hands. His babysitters were too busy playing, so he came to play with us, but he was rude! He sat right down on Dave’s baseball bag, getting chocolate all over it. Then, he wouldn’t get up after being asked, until Dave picked up the bag from underneath him. So, Peyton headed for the monkey bars, and was making her way across. She got to the edge, and put her feet on the bars. As soon as she did that, he pushed her feet off the landing, trying to make her fall. We caught her, but decided it wasn’t worth it to stay. I even had to tell the boy it was rude to push! He was only about 3 or so, but he was rough! And I didn’t want him to chase me around with the chocolate, which I swore looked like dog poop!! We all walked back, and then washed up for dinner. Tomorrow Dave will continue his “volunteerism” by taking Brandon to Great America as a chaperone. He was informed he’d be in charge of 6 other kids! I guess it’s 2 adults for 6 kids, which doesn’t sound bad, but he doesn’t know any of these kids. And there is a water park there, too, so he’ll have his hands full I’m sure. I’ll get my chance on Friday, when we go up to Sausalito with Peyton and her class.
