Our Day of Fun

This morning, we dropped Peyton off at school, then headed to the lake trail. I told Brandon he’d get to ride his scooter, but I didn’t want whining. He agreed, and we set out after gearing him up. He was on a short leash when we headed out, not wanting me to get too far ahead from him. I was pacing him in the beginning, while he was getting more comfortable on his scooter. Then, as he eased into it, he started to get ahead of me. The trail is fairly narrow, and luckily, I’d been on the same stretch with Bonnie earlier this year. I wanted to be sure he was safe, and could stop when he needed to. There were many walkers and cyclists going in both directions. He did a great job staying where he needed to be safe. He whizzed by me at one downhill section, and I could hear giggling, as he nervously laughed while he passed me. He teetered a bit, but thankfully he didn’t fall. We made it to our half-way stop, right as he was starting to whine for water. I asked him if he wanted to hang out at the park, but I told him we still had to go back the other half of the way. He thought about it, and then chose going back. I guess he didn’t want to expend any more energy. We sat in total for about 5 minutes. He didn’t have to go potty or do anything else, so we headed back. Going back seemed easier, and by now, he was very far ahead of me. I had to run harder to keep up so I could guide him to the right when I heard cyclists coming from behind us. I also wanted to be sure he was careful around the walkers. There were two times the rangers had their trucks, and he knew to stop completely when they came through. He asked me with about a mile to go how far we had left. He wasn’t quite complaining yet, but I could see he was tired. Soon, we made it back, and then we headed to the local donut shop. I let him pick out one that he could split, and he looked over his choices before selecting an apple turnover-type deal. I got one anyway to share with Dave when he got home. We got back home, and I showered up. He ate his half of the donut, while I put mine away. After I showered, we headed out to lunch. I told him since we’d burned a lot of calories, we could go have lunch. We headed to a place Michelle had recommended.  They brought two hot soups on the house, and as we ordered, Brandon chose the roti, while I picked Pad Thai and a cold salmon salad. Fortunately, I brought my “adventurous” eater with me, since the “cold” salad was raw fish. I asked him if he wanted to try it, and he was excited!  He ate his fair share, asking for seconds and thirds. It had mangos and cucumbers, so he got veggies and fruit with it as well!  We also were served mango ice tea, and Brandon was not sure about drinking tea since we don’t usually let him.  I told him a little bit was okay.  He said, “So this is what tea tastes like?”  It was sweetened, so I told him that.  I should just let him drink it straight up and then see what he says.  He drank about half a cup, and I took the rest of it, as he does NOT need any extra caffeine.  We didn’t finish all the noodles, but he said he was still okay to try the snow ice. We debated on whether to get milk or mango. I told him Mckayla liked the milk version, and showed him the pictures of both. The server said we couldn’t do half-half, so he agreed to the milk. Then, he changed his mind and said he wanted mango. Fortunately, the owner brought us a free mango! Brandon’s face lit up! (As did mine!) So, we split that one as well, and the owner came up to ask Brandon what his favorite one was. Brandon told him he liked the milk one after all. I liked the mango one myself, but was glad to have been able to try both. We left and headed to the store to buy stuff for his lunch tomorrow. I have to start making lunches again for him!
He’s playing now, while we wait around for the class lists to be posted at 4pm. Then we’ll go get Peyton. He journaled that he had a fun summer, particularly his camping trip and Florida. He’s concerned that Peyton doesn’t have a summer break, but I told him that I’d make sure she got some time, too. Today, he also showed “an invisible Peyton” something he made in the car. He turned to her open seat and started talking to it. I asked him if he missed her, and he said, “No, because she’s too noisy, either laughing or crying too much.” He definitely loves one on one attention.
