A Birthday Celebration

Another year older, but to the kids, it’s just an ordinary day. They knew it was my birthday yesterday, but I awoke to 1) Dave leaving before my alarm to golf, and 2) “Brandon bit me.” So, I woke up to deal with that, and then took Peyton to school while Brandon wrote sentences in the car, “Teeth are for food, not biting.” (Like fish are friends, no food.) We got back to school, and of course, Brandon was in a pissy mood. He calmed down when we got out of the car, but I made him wait until the last minute. He went to flag salute, while I went to the coffee with the CDC manager. Turns out, I was the only parent there! I mean, CDC is for working parents, so it stands to reason many of them wouldn’t be able to make an 830 am meeting. But, we had a nice chat, I got a full tour, learned more about what Brandon does there, and even asked about future placement for Peyton. I learned there is a binder kept on Brandon, and the teachers must chart achievements in quite a few different areas. So there are little slips of paper that cite examples of 1) good hygiene, 2) health and exercise, 3) positive self-esteem, 4) interactions with adults, 5) interactions with peers, 6) empathy, 7) self-awareness, 8) diversity, 9) safety and a few others I don’t recall. The safety one was funny, “Before we went out to the playground, Brandon suggested I (teacher) bring an ice pack in case someone gets hurt.” Also, things like, “Brandon told someone not to staple like that, saying, ‘That’s how I stapled my finger last year.” Learning from his mistakes. I like it! They also put pictures they’ve taken that demonstrate the positives that he does. The folder stays with him for the entire time he is there, so it’ll definitely be neat to see him evolve over the time he is there. I then headed over to the next meeting, to coordinate our next meeting (yes, it’s a pre-meeting for our meeting), which is Monday. I’ve hired a babysitter. *GASP*! Yes, our first paid sitter. It was a big step for me. Ms T is going to come over after work at Peyton’s school on Monday. There was an option to bring the kids to school, and have them hang out on the playground, but the meeting goes until 8pm, and I want them to be at or close to bed by then. Plus, Ms T said she wanted to hang out with the kids, too.
I headed home a bit to clean up, and then Dave got home from golf. I waited to see if he’d bring me lunch, but no such luck. We went to pick up Brandon from chess club, then headed home for lunch while he did his homework. He finished up his lunch, too, then we headed out to get Peyton. I was telling Dave how I’d never changed the channel when “Blurred Lines” came up as Peyton said she liked the song. Later, Peyton told me, “Daddy doesn’t let me listen to this song.” Dave corroborated the story, saying he didn’t like the lyrics. So, the last time it came on in the car when she and I were alone, she told me about it, and asked me to turn it to a different station, saying “I don’t like this song anymore.” Cute that she doesn’t listen to him to sit down while she’s eating, but when it’s something like that, she does listen.
So three of us went to pick her up, and Ms Elena happily reported that Peyton shared her share toy – well, book – the President’s Book. Ms E said she talked quietly, but there were no tears. She even shared her favorite president was George Washington. Brandon asked her why she didn’t say Abraham Lincoln? Peyton said, “They only told me to say one president, so I did.” Finally, I’m noticing Peyton stutters when she can’t get her words out fast enough, or she will say, “UM” repeatedly. So it sounds like, “Mommy, um, um, um, um, ” When she does this, I stop her, have her collect her thoughts and try again. She’s really good now, she’ll catch herself, say, “Oops, I just said, ‘Um,” ” and then will continue on without saying it. She has a friend who stutters on occasion, so I’m not sure if it’s rubbing off on her. I think she has to juggle to get any air time when Brandon is around, that she is stunned when she does get time to talk.
After we were all together, we went for an early sushi dinner, followed by gelato. The kids were in bed early, after Dave gave them a last hug before his trip, while I went to get groceries. On my birthday. Yay for me. The guy in front of me announced it was his bday, and the checker started ringing the bells, calling it out like crazy. I did NOT want that kind of attention, but I quietly told her it was also my birthday. The checkers behind her both turned around and asked if I was serious. I showed them my drivers license, and then got a quiet “happy birthday” from the checker. Clearly, I wasn’t partying hard, and the guy in front of me said he was on his way to work. So sad. As I was leaving, I heard the checker ask the guy behind me if it was his birthday, too! Now, for a quiet night, for awhile, as Dave is leaving early tomorrow morning for a 645 am flight! Can’t feel too badly for him. He’s going to paradise!
