Run Run Run!!

This morning, my alarm clocks let me snooze until 710 am. I woke up suddenly, and immediately woke Dave. We had to be at school by 8 am for the Fun Run! Once we’d gotten up, Brandon came in fully dressed in his race gear. I was dragging a bit, having caught a cold this weekend. After I’d gotten ready, I went to wake up Little Miss Sunshine (NOT!) She was grumpy, but at least she was already up. She was just lounging around. I got her motivated to change in 2 minutes for a card, and suddenly, she was dressed and ready to go. We got them breakfast, sunblock, and were out the door by 750 am. When we got to school, there was a sea of blue shirts. We got in line for our family picture, and Dave tried to exchange Brandon’s shirt. It’s an 8-10, but it just fits him now. I was hoping to order a size larger, but even that’s not large enough. Peyton’s fit the way I’d intended, just a little bit bigger than she is now. Luckily, Dave and I aren’t growing (hopefully), and we each fit our shirts. Dave came back, but there were no extra shirts to exchange. So, we put Brandon’s back on with his bib number. We got our photo right as they were calling for the start line. Peyton and I were going to do 2K , while Brandon was going to run the 5K with a friend, with Dave in tow. Brandon, Dave and Wyatt started at the front, while Peyton and I hung out by the walkers. I wasn’t kidding myself with her, setting expectations low. Sure enough, she gave up before we even left out of the school! She let go of my hand, and STOPPED! I had to swim back upstream in the SEA of blue, and fish her out. I convinced her to run with me until we got off the grass, since it was wet. She did that, then I had to employ other tricks to get her to move. I knew I was doomed whenever she let go of my hand, so I had to maintain contact with her. She did have a few spurts of energy where she sprinted! I mean, I had to sprint to keep up with her she was running that fast. Granted, it lasted for less than 10 seconds, then she’d go from 60 to 0 just like that. I was just hoping she wouldn’t trip, because if she fell on the concrete, she’d NEVER run again. At one point, she went over to the curb and just plopped down. I had enough time to take a picture of her 🙂

We ran by the principal, and I asked Peyton to run to the water stand. The principal said, “Or skip! Why don’t you skip to the water?” Either way, Peyton wasn’t having it. She did drink some, then we headed on our way. It was 2K, which is 1.2 miles. Next year, she was telling me she wanted to do 5K because she’ll be 5. We’ll see about that. We got to the finish, and she finished strong, with a sprint to her medal. Here’s us at the finish, along with her proudly displaying her medal.

We went to get some snacks – bagel, coffee cake, and coffee for me before meeting up with Dave and Brandon. They made it the whole way, but Dave had to push Brandon to run a little bit. He and Wyatt stayed together, and I saw Wyatt before seeing Brandon. Dave said Brandon did much better than last year, when he was a bit more whiny on the 5K. Hopefully next year, we can all go together. I’ll start Peyton on a training program. 🙂
