Final Day!

Today, we all woke up and got ready right away. We left for WF to buy a birthday cake and ate breakfast along the way. We showed up to the mall at 9 am, one hour before the theater box office was to open. We decided to do some laps around the mall. I thought that we could get 5 in in an hour, while Brandon suggested 8! We did a few, then Dave and Brandon went to the potty. At some point while they were gone (I kept going), Dave decided he wanted to check out the new gym facilities at the mall. We’d received introductory information about it before, but we had never been inside. It was about 930 am or so, but they were happy to give us a tour. We checked out the kids’ club, and were able to view all of the facility. Then, it was time for us to head out, so we went back to the box office, about 10 after. I went in to save seats, while Dave greeted Brandon’s friends outside. Since we weren’t there right as it opened, there were people already filing in. I had a hard time getting 9 seats together, so I opted for 7 seats together and two behind for Dave and me to watch the kids. I laid out my jacket, sweater and purse and waited behind the big block. No one gave me problems, as others in the audience were also saving seats. Dave texted me back and forth, as he was selling back 2 tickets (one he bought for Peyton and another for the boy who cancelled this morning due to illness). One of the boy’s grandma wanted to stay with him, worrying how Dave and I would transfer kids back and forth. Eventually, we had all the boys together, with the grandma and me sitting behind them. Dave was nowhere to be seen. Grandma and I took turns going to the restroom, and by the time I got back, Dave was back. He’d sold too many back, and then he couldn’t buy one back because the show was sold out! Luckily, someone had returned their tickets because it was too crowded. Never mind the fact that I had an open seat with Dave’s name on it next to me, but they just base it on ticket sales at the time. We got it all settled, and then finally we were able to relax a little bit. The boys were all well-behaved, though Brandon declared he wanted to sit next to the last boy that showed up even though he was already sitting next to a twin on either side. We told him to relax and just enjoy who he was sitting next to. All the boys knew each other except one from pre-school, but he was introduced to them all outside. Dave had bought some popcorn for the boys to share, and then we watched previews. When the Spiderman trailer played, we could tell Brandon was completely enthralled. I don’t think he blinked once during the trailer! It was probably the same with the rest of the boys. We haven’t let him see a movie like that before, so he was definitely intrigued. Finally, the movie got started, and one of the boys did say, “Finally!” The movie was entertaining with a lot of subtleties that adults would appreciate. Dave and I got a kick out of it, especially as the story line pertained to our family! The subplot could easily have been Dave and Brandon. When the movie was done, the boys waited for us to get up and escort them out. We met outside the theater and waited for Grandma and Jack to go to the restroom. Then, we walked to the restaurant, through the mall. It was nice as it was a bit gloomy outside, so we were able to remain nice and toasty inside.  Grandma commented how organized Dave and I were.  Even though we were a bit scattered in the beginning, no one else knew what was going on 😉  I had all the kids’ orders and parent’s contact information on one sheet, written out, and in the phones, so they were on hand in case of an emergency.  Dave had them in email but I wanted them written out old school.

We were seated relatively quickly, and the boys were informed to not touch the griddle. Dave sat on one side, and I on the other, with 7 boys in between, so we could see them all, as we were arranged in a rectangle, facing the chef. They were daring each other to touch the griddle, but fortunately, Dave’s and my looks and warnings to them were heeded. The two boys that clashed last year (from the two different realms) ended up sitting next to each other this year! I was hoping one more year of maturity would help, but they did pick at each other throughout lunch. They were okay, but I had to be stern on several occasions. When the chef came out to start cooking, he had their full attention. It was pretty cool to see seven pairs of eyes honed in on one place. Once we got the show on the road, things took care of themselves. We just couldn’t give the boys any downtime. They more or less sat in their seats, and when lunch was done, before dessert, Dave broke out the party favors – Lego minifigures from the movie we just watched! The boys had fun seeing which character they would get, as it was random selection. One boy told me he wanted me to call his dad. He said he only wanted to watch the movie and eat his rice and soy sauce. I did convince him that we had ice cream coming, so he was okay to stay. I was a little worried though he bounced back. We got them calmed down enough to order their ice cream, too. Ice cream and cake were served in a hurry, as we were trying to move things along. I left the table to use the restroom, and Dave gave me a glare! When he left, he had two boys in tow with him, Brandon and another boy. So, I only had 5 of them to watch. It did harken my days of Unicamp. The funny thing was what kept the boys at my end of the table entertained and not picking on each other was our conversation about plants versus zombies 2. One of the boys mentioned he plays it, and I asked him, “What level are you on, because I’m stuck on the Wild West.” Both of them looked at me with wide eyes! So, we had a 15 minute conversation about which plants, zombies, and strategies work the best. I’m glad Brandon had been playing it, so I had something in common to talk about with them. That saved me from the two of them poking each others’ eyes out with chopsticks. The server wanted to take a photo, but not all the boys were cooperative. We only had 5-6 of them who participated. We all ended up outside, waiting for the parents to come pick them up. Tyler’s dad arrived, then we ended up calling Nico’s dad. They were still at home, so we made the executive decision to take them all home. We were already taking Josh home from the start, and offered to take the twins home halfway through lunch. So, we had room for one more, and since it’d be another 15 minutes with all of them outside waiting for Nico’s parents, we decided to take off. The twins were in the back, and Brandon in the middle. They’re all 8 so no carseats were needed. We had the booster that Peyton uses and the booster that Brandon still uses, so the 7 year olds each took one of those. We went house by house back to our home to deliver kids. Dave and I were SOOO ready for the party to be over. Brandon said thank you and goodbye to each of the boys as they exited our vehicle. With the last to exit, we breathed a sigh of relief, and headed to pick up Peyton. Nico’s family was surprised she wasn’t with us. I told them the reason she was not, and I couldn’t imagine her being with us. I did miss her though! When we got to my parents’ house, no one was there! They were picking up some more smoke detectors.  They didn’t come home for about another hour or so.  Brandon had time to open up his gifts and peruse what he was given.  Lego movie sets!  Awesome!  And Pokemon cards.  He did get a duplicate Lego movie set, but not to worry, he will be able to return it.  He said he had a great time, and he was the only kid who ate his full salad and veggies.  Partially because we were there, and partially because he was hungry.  In fact, he ate two salads, and tried to drink the juice/dressing leftover!  Next time, Dave and I will plan a shorter party 🙂  Peyton came home, and I asked her if she missed me.  She said, “No.”  Waaah!  She had a great time with my mom, as they went out to dinner together last night, just the two of them.  They shared a sopa plate, and “just a little chips” per Peyton.  My mom said she is so dainty, handling the chips with just her index finger and thumb. Peyton fell asleep in my parents’ bed, and my mom said she knew what my dad would say when he got back from the pageant.  Sure enough, this morning, he looked at her and said, “What are YOU doing in my bed?”  Peyton looked at my mom and said, “You were right, Grandma!”  My mom also told me how Peyton was drinking her water or milk by holding the stem of the cup in between her index and middle finger, saying, “I’m drinking wine, like Daddy, while watching TV, Grandma!” I even had my mom tell Dave directly, to inform him of the influence he has over his daughter!  Hopefully she isn’t a wino before she’s of age.

Both kids had a great time without each other, but soon they were downstairs playing together.  They were playing with Matchbox cars, and BOTH were laughing their heads off.  They have the same laugh!  I even said, “Gee, it sounds like you guys missed each other.”  Neither said a word but kept playing, crashing cars into each other to see which would fall off the track first.

We decided to go out for some dumplings, though I was still stuffed from lunch.  The kids ate well, of course, and then we headed home.  I took off to TJ’s for the week’s groceries, since we didn’t get any this week.  Both kids were in bed and asleep when I returned.  Phew…all the birthdays are done!  Brandon had a field trip, new classroom at CDC, and basketball practice tomorrow.  He admitted tomorrow was going to be a long day.  Just one more week until a much needed break is had by all!!
