Basketball camp

Tourney of Champions

Brandon’s team won their division, beating a coach that Brandon had had in all stars a few years ago. He’s always been a thorn in Dave’s side, though the coach is rather tame against Dave. But the coach is a hot head, and they had to beat a bunch of friends that are mostly a year younger. They had played them throughout the season, and finally, last Wednesday, they won their game. It was a double elimination tourney, so they put the final dagger in their season last week. That meant Brandon’s team got to represent the league in district play. Their first game was Thursday, but Peyton had practice. Based on Dave’s string of texts, I thought they lost. Peyton and I ate dinner at in and out, and we saw Brandon’s teammate’s sister, who told me they won! So, we went over to where the boys were, as they were headed back after trying to have dinner close to where they won. But SCU had just let out for the summer, so the hang out was crowded with college kids. The team hung out at the local joint. While we were there, we saw Peyton’s coach’s coworkers, as identified by Brandon’s coach, who also works with them. We tried to get Peyton to take a picture with them, but she wouldn’t. We tried to bribe her, and she declined; she wouldn’t budge. Brandon agreed to take a photo with her. Soon after, the girls’ softball team comprised of girls that Peyton played last year, when she was playing up. They are all Brandon’s age, and they were there to hang out, too. So we got a picture with her, which was more of a willing picture, with no bribes involved. Dave was excited to beat the league where one of Brandon’s travel team coach coaches (one of the coaches that has daddy ball issues). Today, the second round of the TOCs was being played. Dave went to work in the morning, waking Peyton up by 630 am. She crawled into bed seemingly wide awake. We went early, and while Dave and Brandon warmed up, we walked to get boba and lunch. Peyton was happy to chit chat, to the point I had to hurry her so we could go back to the game. We made it back for the introductions, announcements and national anthem. They were playing at the home field of yet more of Brandon’s teammates. The team we were playing today had 3 of the travel teammates, with another coach with a kid on the travel team, who is also vying for Brandon’s spot. Dave wanted to beat them, as well, to make a statement.

The team dropped 5 runs in the first inning, with bone-headed plays. Brandon was playing first base the whole game. Fortunately, he made the plays that were needed, and he didn’t have any errors. The team made a valiant attempt to come back, getting as close as 7-9, but they couldn’t rally the team to the end.

Tourney weekend

Brandon had a tourney in SCH whereas Peyton was playing at HAY. Brandon had his last closing ceremonies on Saturday. So Dave took him while I took Peyton. We were headed up to camp after her four games and since I’d just washed my car on Friday, I was going to drive the big car. When she found out, she asked me, “You’re going to drive the MdX by yourself?” I was appalled that she would even ask. And then determined to show her I could. I have to prove to her I can do things on my own. So we set out for our day. Dave was able to make one of her games to watch. I had her eat lunch out of the tailgate with her teammate while her parents ran an errand. We drove to camp after the last game wrapped up by 630 pm, arriving by 730 pm after a windy drive. Glad she was sound asleep so we didn’t have to worry about sickness. We stayed just long enough for her to bridge to juniors before rushing back out before sunset as that would have made the drive that much more treacherous. Exciting news!

On Wednesday, the organization that is putting the summer softball program together released their team via FB videos. Peyton’s age group was announced at 2 pm, our time.

I showed her later that night, and she was excited that her friend, Lyka, from the tryouts would be on her half of the team. There are two teams at each age group. She was even happier that they correctly pronounced her name, as other names were butchered.

Peyton’s recap

Saturday morning, our carpool came to get us at 830 am. We ran into a bit of traffic, and we were a little late, but arrived safe and sound.

The girls had three games, at 11 am, 2 pm and 630 pm. We had picnic style food, and the girls ate in between games. Peyton has been struggling with batting, but in the second game, she hit a big one!

She unfortunately ran into the tag at third as she realized she wouldn’t make it. Too bad! It was 3 outs by then. She said she didn’t cry (That was the way she was going to get to watch A League of Their Own, as I’d shown her a portion of the “No crying in baseball” clip.)

The team was really down in the middle game, and she came into pitch. She did okay, and fortunately didn’t get hit by a come backer like her teammate did against the third team they played. She was afraid to pitch after that.

Sunday’s game started at 8 am, meaning we had a 530 am wake up call. Peyton was texting Dave while I showered up, giving him a summary from her perspective. He was trying to cheer her up, and give her a pep talk for Sunday. They had two games on Sunday before we were out of there by midday.

Dave had ribs going, but our carpool had to go home, since the dad had to work. The girls won’t remember the scores of the games, but they will remember hanging out, playing charades in the grass, and having a great time with one another. They also hung out with the older team, who helped them warm up and got their spirits up.
