First Grade Knowledge

Today, I asked Peyton if she talks to Karlee, her friend from softball. She said, “Well, no not really, because we don’t sit at the same table. And anyway, we’re not supposed to talk during tests.” I asked, “OH, you took a test today?” She said, “Ya, a pre-test.” I asked further, “Oh, for what?” She said, “A real test.”
Later, after even more questioning, she said it was for “English reading”. Today, Brandon told Peyton, ” Stop following me”. It prompted me to ask her how she did getting to CDC this week. I’ve been sick so I didn’t really have the wherewithal to ask sooner. She told me, “Well the day before yesterday, I didn’t really know what to do.”  She said she waited around near her classroom for awhile then didn’t see me.  So she went to Brandon’s room and asked his teacher if she knew where Brandon was.  She said no.  Then she went to room three at cdc and saw Brandon’s bag.  Then she knew to go to her own room. I asked her if she cried.  She said, “Not really cried. Like a little bit crying, but not really.”  Poor thing. She said she didn’t know which days of the week to go to cdc.  I could see that she was running around frantic and huffy trying to figure out what to do. She did make her way there yesterday. I told her to go to CDC as long as she didn’t see me in her class for pick up.  She understood.  She said she had to run around all over school trying to figure out what to do.  CDC usually calls if the kids aren’t there in a reasonable time so I guess she made it before they noticed. She follows him around at drop off. I told him it’s a free country 😀.  I know it was confusing since I’d picked her up all last week.  This was her first week doing it alone and neither of us reminded her.

Job Application

Brandon was asked to complete a job application for his class this year. He was given a list of job descriptions, and then he “applied” for 2 positions. There was a spot for 3 positions, so I encouraged him to add another. He told me, “I have to applicate for a job.”
Here is what he put:

Our Overnight Trip

Yesterday, after nap and lunch, we dropped Peyton off at her troop leader’s house. S came out to say hello, then we transferred Peyton’s gear from our car to theirs. They went in to say hello to S’s dad and brother and say bye there. She had to go potty (again, don’t know why she didn’t go when we left the house), but she made her way to the potty first before coming back to say goodbye. Her dad came out and met Dave and Brandon. He asked Brandon what school he was going, and asked which grade. Brandon answered, and then he told him he’d see him in middle school. Brandon nodded respectfully, then S’s dad asked him, “Do you know what I do at the middle school?” Brandon shrugged and said no. He told him, “I’m the principal there.” Brandon didn’t say much, but in my mind, I was hoping Brandon didn’t have to spend too much time seeing S’s dad. We said goodbye, and we were off. We’d forgotten our transponder, so we went back home to get it. It cost about 30 minutes, but we were hoping it may save us time later. We set off on our drive, and it did help somewhat so we didn’t have to wait in line at the toll booths. We got up there in about 3 hours, having hit some traffic on our way up. My mom met us at the casino, and we found her playing some random slot by our meeting point. She was going to take Brandon to dinner at the buffet, while we went to go get quick food. They came back to see us again and told us that the buffet line was too long, and they’d go to get food at the cafe. We took our food and ate outside. It was a perfect evening, with the outside venue. It wasn’t too hot or too cold, and I was in a sleeveless dress. We had floor seats, 18 rows from the stage. We took one selfie before the show, and Dave scored a free t-shirt that was thrown off the stage. Some other shirts were being launched from cannons, but those were sent past us. The show was to start at 7 pm, and only after 15 minutes, the first performer, Babyface, made his way on to the stage. No pomp, no circumstance, just on the stage! He sang most of his older popular songs, and then launched into a medley of songs he’d written for other artists. This was my favorite part of his show, as in the past when I’d seen him. This was Dave’s first time seeing him, and he enjoyed this, too. He sang a song by James Taylor, another from Eric Clapton, and his other artists he’d collaborated.

Here is the song from our wedding CD given out as favors:

He played for about an hour, then it was time to change sets for Boyz II Men. Dave and I were playing Name that Tune with some of the songs in between sets. They came on with a similar intro to that in Vegas, which Dave hadn’t seen either. Later, they, too, had a medley, from covers ranging from Ed Sheeran, Nirvana, and the Beatles!

Again, fun to hear songs from other artists in addition to their own songs. They went on for over an hour before calling it quits. There was no encore as I was hoping, but we exited the venue calmly. We went to the pool to see if the afterparty had started, but Dave just wanted to go home. We headed back and got home in 25 minutes. My mom left the door unlocked, though Brandon was worried about going to sleep with the door open. It was 11 pm, and we locked up behind us. We showered up to get the casino smoke off us, and then we headed to bed.
I was awoken by the ringing of the phone. I had no idea where I was, what time of the day it was, nothing! It took me a few seconds to realize where I was, and even longer for my heart rate to return to resting! It was good though, as we had time to clean up and get ready to go. Brandon was already up, and he ate breakfast, while Dave put my mom’s keyboard together as she’d requested. I wanted to get going back to Peyton. I hadn’t heard anything from them, which I figured was good news. We set out by 8 am with a stop by a coffee place for Dave. He’d been eyeing it for some time now. It was in downtown D, a college town. Brandon asked if he could go to school there. Dave didn’t want to have to come there to visit, since he wanted somewhere further away. I suggested Boston 🙂 Then, Dave got to thinking Brandon could go there for vintner’s school! Suddenly, he didn’t mind visiting him. We were on the road and projected to come back into town around 1030 am. I texted the troop leader by now, and then started getting pictures back! They were in their morning program, learning about more animals. They were going to be done by 10 am, and then they were allowed to go to the rides and other parts of the zoo. They were looking to be done by 11 am. So we got in to town, and we headed to a potty inside W-mart. Then, we waited in the parking lot for them to arrive. I saw them before they saw me, and Peyton turned and said, “MOMMY!” It was the sweetest! I walked over with them to their car to retrieve her belongings. I got a brief update about their time there, and found out they were the only troop/group for the overnight! They had a night program yesterday, and then a morning session. Peyton did a great job overnight, and in general. S, another troop leader, came up behind us with M, and she also told me that Peyton did an awesome job overnight. When I told Peyton to say a thank you, she suddenly became shy! Both of the leaders said that was not how she was before, and that she was jabbering away. She did get a hug and tickle in with S’s mom, and I believe a high five in for M’s mom. I thanked both for the opportunity afforded to Peyton to have them take her. We said our goodbyes, then headed to the grocery store. Peyton recounted what she’d done. They saw a hedgehog, capybarra, a LARGE rodent, a jaguar named Sophia, a large bunny, how bats catch food in a little web with their feet and eat, how skunks can do hand stands, how hedgehogs can get poop on themselves to camouflage themselves from predators, and got to feed sheep and a large cow-looking animal. They slept on the hard floor in the classroom area, and they had snacks – one chips ahoy last night, pretzels, and cocoa. This morning, they had pancakes, and she had two. She said she missed all of us, but she didn’t tell anyone. She didn’t have to potty overnight. They went to sleep around 1030 pm, and they were awoken by 7 am by Mandy, the guide. She said she really liked her name. She rode the Frog ride twice, one with the troop without an adult, and the other time, she and S went on it alone since they wanted to go again. Last night, they had pizza at PMH, and she had cheese since they didn’t have Hawaiian as she normally gets. S LOVES pineapple, too. She had milk. Dave got groceries while I took P to get an acai bowl. When we got home, she said she was tired. That earned her a trip to her room for a nap. She didn’t put up too much of a fight, though I’d wanted her to change and put her stuff away. She didn’t get that far. We woke up and went to Brandon’s scrimmage at a field nearby. I’d brought some food for her, since she skipped lunch. She threw around with Dave, and then we headed home. Both practiced piano, and Peyton was waiting for a dog-walking with Cody. Tricia let me know they were late due to F’s soccer tournament going longer due to their win. I told her Peyton had to get to bed early, so if it didn’t work out, that’s okay. Peyton was disappointed, but I read her the text, so she knew I had tried at least. They’re ready for their first full week at school!
Here are the picures…
from her camera – she was told not to use flash. Dave asked her why she didn’t take pictures of her friends. She didn’t know she was “allowed” to. Oops. So they are a bit…dark.
They are mostly of Sophia. She was able to tell us they were of the tail, the head, etc. I don’t know though. It’s pretty dark.

Play date #2

Today, Peyton was invited over to V’s house for an impromptu playdate to play with a jumpy house she’d gotten for her birthday. We went to get V her birthday present this morning after practicing piano. She picked out a set of earrings for her, along with a shirt to match. We headed to her house by 930 am. She gave Peyton a quick hug, then they went to the backyard to play. I had warned Peyton we could only stay for 1.5 hours, until 11 am. We had a big day, and she needed lunch and a nap before 2. They played awhile, then had a snack. Later, another friend came over to play with V’s sister, so four of them were playing with AGD’s together. Peyton recognized the girl as an older sister of a girl she knows in her new class. They said goodbye and Peyton said thank you, and we headed out. It’s been really nice to see her getting along with different friends. We came home, and she took a nap as requested, though it was interrupted by the boys who had come home from a bike ride and baseball outing. Now we’re cleaning up in anticipation for our mini getaway, and Peyton’s overnight trip!

Piano

Peyton asked me if it was okay to play piano for Hope.
I only caught it midway, but I was surprised that she wanted to “perform”.
Dave doesn’t want me to post something with other kids that don’t know about the blog…but at least I have a reference in my locked down youtube site. Play Date in Progress

Today, Peyton was super excited because Hope was going to come over. She cleaned up her room though Hope had asked her mom to tell Peyton she didn’t have to. (Her mom said that’s what she would want to hear if someone were coming to her house). She even made her bed; and get this, with Brandon’s help! He told her, “Here, let me show you, because Grandma showed me how to make the bed.” I suggested he do the same, and he responded, “She’s not coming into MY room!” I told him just in case she walked by and she would tell Grace what a messy room he had. Well, that prompted him to make his bed and tidy up a bit, too. After drop off and flag salute, I headed to work for a couple of hours. I went back home and got some things out of Peyton’s closet for them to play. I headed to school to pick up H, but her mom was there to greet her from the teacher. Since it’s still early, the teacher is getting to know the parents and who picks up whom. I was a little worried if I had to pick up directly from class in case the teacher didn’t release her. I went to get Peyton, who was already running over to me. We went back to Hope, and Peyton and she were chit-chatting, while I talked to Hope’s mom. We walked back to the car, and Peyton was telling Hope all about what they could do. Hope was telling Peyton she knew where she lived because they often walk their dog by our house. Her mom said they sounded like stalkers, since they could tell when we were home or not. They even offered to pick Peyton up for a round of dog-walking! Peyton was super excited to hear about that. When we pulled up to the driveway, Hope said, “Grace was really happy that Brandon was in her class.” Haha..I kept it to myself that the feeling was mutual.

Peyton knew she had to offer the guest the choice of activities. They washed up, and then headed upstairs to play. They ended up playing in the kitchen, and I overheard them making smoothies. Soon, Peyton told me Hope wanted a snack. Hope whispered, “I told you to ASK her!” We got some cheese sticks and popcorn, and then they went back up to play. We didn’t have a lot of time, since I was dropping Hope back off to her mom when she picked up Grace. Tricia had suggested that she could drop Brandon off at our house after school was done, but I told her I wanted to make sure I was there so I could make sure he had all his things (he left his water bottle there yesterday). She understood, but I’m sure if Brandon knew about it, he’d throw a fit not being able to get a ride home with them! we’ll definitely have an eventful year. IT’s super quiet now, and I just called out to Peyton. She told me they were playing house, and that it was night time and they were sleeping. I wonder if she is imposing naptime on Hope! Gotta go..

Boys…

While we were leaving school, I heard, “BYE PEYTON!” I turned around, and I saw Shane getting into his dad’s car. We both shouted back, “Bye, Shane!” and Peyton waved. I heard another “BYE PEYTON!” from a boy’s voice, and we turned around again. I suddenly thought maybe we said bye to the wrong person?! Then, I saw the car behind Shane’s dad, and it had two other people waving – a dad and another boy. It was Noah. So we both said, “Bye, Noah!” and waved again. But this time, after she said bye, under her breath, or really, aloud, since they were across the street, she said, “UGH. again!?” She told me she played with Noah today, even though they weren’t in the same class this year, as she tried to play with Hope, but Hope told her she was playing with Melody, so Hope would play with Peyton tomorrow. I’m glad Peyton moved on and didn’t have a problem finding someone else to play with. She did tell me, “There are a LOT of kids on the playground.” At least 144 kids, and that’s just her grade level. So, she played with Noah, said hi to V, and played tag with Stella. She said, “The teacher already knew my name.” It’s no wonder she was so full of words, since she’d kept it all inside all day long.
