9/11

In the morning, I got up and drove to my mom. I met her at the park and drive for an easy in and out service. We made it up and found parking. It looked cold, and since we were almost 2 hours early, we hung out in the car. After an hour of breathing our own breath, we got out and went potty. Then, we needed to line up in the corral. We got there, and then my mom told me she wasn’t “running” the race. But she needed coffee. So, I asked her to hurry and she jogged! For coffee. We got coffee for her (I’d already had mine on my drive up), and then lined up in the corral. We got to the front of 3, the last one. Carolyn saw my FB check in and stopped by to see us (She was in 2) with Matteo. We started about 10 minutes after the race began. They were sending waves of people, breaking it up to avoid a stampede. I did warn my mom to jog a little in the beginning to avoid being trampled by the people behind us. When it was our turn, she did jog. Just like for coffee. And kept it up! For quite awhile. I kept pace with her, just so we wouldn’t get lost. She kept a good pace, and at the turn around, she bypassed water. I didn’t have to drag her by the hand like with Brandon. We finished in pretty good time; I was expecting closer to an hour. We made it across just over 40 minutes. I wanted to rush back to Peyton, as she was already through her first softball game of the fall. She was moving on to basketball practice, which was also the first one. My mom and I got a bit of food, then headed back home to drop her off. I made it just in time for the parents’ meeting. I saw Dave and Tricia together in the meeting. We signed up for our volunteer role, and then headed back in to watch the girls. B and G were inside watching or entertaining themselves. After practice, I went home to shower up for the next event, while Dave took them to eat lunch.

Michelle picked me up at 3 pm, and we headed to The Escape room. Thuy, Theresa and Bonnie also met up with us. We were given an hour to escape a room that was put together. Actually, it was two rooms, that had a lock in between and we had to break out of the rooms. We all worked together to solve clues and broke out in about 44 minutes! We were all proud of ourselves. We headed to an early dinner after that. All you can eat Korean BBQ! The line even at 430 pm was ridiculous. We only waited 30 minutes or a little bit more before being seated. We ordered 4 meats at a time, and for the most part, were all yummy! There were some that I did not try – beef tongue and small intestine. We ate until we were stuffed. We had a two hour limit (theme of the day: time limits!), but we were not close to it. Michelle dropped me off to an empty house. I figured by 745 pm, they should be home! They were not. I was a bit worried, but went about cleaning up and showering again to get the smell off. Soon, they arrived home and we started the bedtime process. They didn’t go to sleep until about 9 pm, which is quite late! Peyton was super tired on Monday, having fallen back asleep on me after crawling into my bed.

Dave and I watched some of the 15th anniversary footage, and it’s still incredible to think about it all.

Third late night!

We’ve been quite busy lately. Friday we went to SF to pick up our race bibs.  We then turned right around to head to the back to school picnic.  I had a pizza selling shift to do but Dave was going to cover it should I not make it back in time. The kids were let out of the car and took off to go see their friends and play.  I got my stuff together and headed over.

Dave preferred to sell so he wouldn’t have to talk to anyone.  We’d received a text from the Yin’s to come over after the event to share Dave’s Oregonian beer with Ryan before he left for a week long trip. We headed over after the kids showered.  It was just after 8 by that time.  G had two friends staying over night. H and F were all there, too.  We hung out, the kids watched a movie, and then they all went back to the girls’ rooms for awhile. Poor Brandon was the only boy but he was a good sport. They came back out glistening! They’d put a facial mask on. Brandon was still in the back and when he came out, I was going to laugh if he was shiny too. He wasn’t fortunately.

We were having a good time both the parents and the kids and finally we figured it was time to go.  It was midnight!!  H had a game in the morning and P had practice.  We let her sleep with us to sleep longer. She lasted until my alarm 8 am. She went to practice okay and Dave and I got to meet the new coach. She melted down over a tshirt. She didn’t get the 22 she wanted and Dave asked to go check with the girl who got it. She said no, and it set Peyton off! Then she got hit with the ball while practicing pitching.  More tears. I ignored her.

From there, we went home to shower Peyton and nap.  She was out for at least two hours.

We then headed to the end of the season party at the coach’s house.  We were the first to arrive even though the party started at 3 and we were there at 310. Coach knew we’d be the first to arrive. We thought we had the time wrong!  Soon more teammates arrived and the party was in full swing. We had a slip and slide and good fun. We didnt end up leaving until almost 830! We said thank you and goodbye and wrapped up.

Tomorrow Peyton has her softball game and then two hours of basketball practice!

Politics

While on our drive home, Peyton told me she would not vote for Donald trump.  She said she would vote for Hilary. I asked her why she didn’t like the idea of a wall. She knew the wall was to prevent Mexicans and others from the south from coming in to the US. This is 90

My grandma’s 90th birthday is actually today. We were all planning to meet for another celebration. This time, my dad was home to celebrate. He came in and said, “Happy birthday, old lady!” They all teased him that they had to get another celebration together to celebrate with him in town. I got the kids to my grandma’s house first and gave her a gift – a digital photo album. We had loaded pictures from the last birthday, last month before the LA kids went off to school and to college. I then sat next to Grandma, and was going to take a selfie, but she thought she was looking at my phone for more pictures! Once she figured it out, I got a real smile out of her. She doesn’t like taking pictures otherwise.

We met Dave at the restaurant, as he had been wandering around over there already.

We had 3 tables’ worth of people to celebrate, all of our cousins and extended family.

Drive up

I had the kids at piano after school, then we headed home to shower up. They changed into nice clothes, then we headed up to SF. I asked the kids to text Daddy for me to let him know where we were. I asked them to look around and find out where we were. Peyton had the phone and asked, “Why would I look around, I’ll just go to Google maps!” Then she proceeded to tell me, “We’re on Junipero Serra freeway, 280.” I asked her for the exit. She texted Dave, “This is Peyton. were on 280.were on ralston Belmont Ave” She does not have the penchant for punctuation, much like her dad. He wrote back, “Why aren’t you napping?” Haha…

On the way home, I had Peyton while Dave took Brandon. I tried to talk her awake to avoid sleeping and moving a sack of potatoes. She told me, “There are only 4 kids who can get books at the library at 4.1 or 2 and below.” I asked who they were. She said, “Landon, Hope, Jesse and me.” I asked her what the other kids can get. She said they had to get 3 or below. I didn’t understand the “or below” part, as I think she should have said, “She can get books above 3,” but I guess that would exclude lower books, so I guess she had it right.

PDX

We left early on Saturday morning, getting up at 4 am to catch our flight. Peyton woke up as I was getting ready, coming in to potty as she often does. She got one more hug in before we left. She went back to her bed after that, and later I found out she woke up at “7:28”. She is very precise with her times. She woke up at “7:14” the next morning. We made it to PDX without any problem. We got our tickets for public transpo and headed to drop off our bags before exploring the city. Our room was not yet ready, so we dropped and went. We took an umbrella just in case, then headed out. We walked just about everywhere in between public transportation stops. We even got ourselves over a pretty high bridge, and I was not trying to talk, as it was a draw bridge. I was freaked out, and didn’t want to look down as Dave was suggesting. We went in search of the Saturday morning farmer’s market, walking past where the basketball team plays. We took a few pictures of Dave taunting Theresa to send to her. Then, we did find the farmer’s market. Dave was saving himself for coffee beyond that. We didn’t see anything we wanted, so we pressed on. We ended up on the other side and found Voodoo by mistake! I waited for a few minutes, while Dave went into a coffee store nearby to buy round 1. It started to drizzle just a bit, but it wasn’t too bad. I decided Voodoo was too close to the kind of donuts we have where I work, so we headed to a different section of town for a different type of donut – Blue Star. And another line we found! This time, we waited. And waited. And waited. After about an hour or so, we made our way to the front of the line. I picked several to try, while Dave stayed by the seats to secure them for us to enjoy the donuts. We did, sharing a few, then taking the rest. We headed into the shopping district to check out the book store as well as some other stores. We ended up not eating lunch, since we were a fit full of donuts. After shopping a bit, we headed back to the hotel, which was still not quite ready. After having been up quite a bit during the day, I took a 30 minute nap until the room was ready. We went upstairs to freshen up a bit, changed, and then headed to an early dinner. We didn’t have reservations, so we decided to walk up and hope for the best at Le Pigeon. There were 10 seats at the bar, which are first come first serve. There were 8 people in front of us, and we were 9 and 10! Perfect! We had a great anniversary meal, then we slowly walked around back to the hotel. We were so stuffed, we couldn’t make it to dessert! There was a slightly dead mall there, but it still had some stores like Old Navy. I bought some things there, then headed back over to our hotel where there was a Burgerville. This is like the Portland In and Out, so Dave “had” to try it. I had a marionberry sundae, like a MCD’s, but with marionberries, while Dave had a sundae and tried a burger. He still thinks In and Out is better. We called it a day!

The next morning, Dave woke me up at 7 am, and he wanted me up and at ’em for brunch. Sunday brunch is nothing to joke about, so he didn’t want to miss out. We bused it out there, and we were the first in line at this place called Muscadine. It wasn’t even open yet! It was a joke among us and the three guys “behind” us that we better hurry up and get up when the hostess flipped the open sign over. We were the only ones for quite some time in this quaint little restaurant. Again, another great meal before we set out to do more sight seeing. We made our way down Alberta street, but many of the shops were still closed. The craft store was closed. Salt and Straw was not opening for another 1.5 hours. So I knew I wanted to come back. We made our way to the Rose Garden and walked around there, before heading over to the Aerial tram. GPS for Dave got us a bit stuck, and so I took matters into my own phone and we got to the base before the tram opened at 1 pm. We went up and down in less than 15 minutes. I was freaked out by the heights (it’s a theme!) We made it back on terra firma, and then we headed to a brewery since we had not yet made our way to one. We had a late lunch, and then made our way to the Nike Outlet on MLK. MLK seems to be the same no matter what area or town we find. A bit sketchy. We shopped a bit, then headed back to Alberta street. Dave dumped me off at the craft store, then headed to get coffee before we joined again for some ice cream. We waited in another hour-long line and basically ate this instead of dinner! We tried to go back downtown before Nordys closed, but that didn’t quite happen. We walked around again downtown, to the Powell’s bookstore again, to get the kids memorabilia. We got them a deck of cards, with Portland artists’ work, and a book of “wicked” that was used and in good condition. Dave wanted a late night dinner, just to get one more meal in. We chose Lardo, and I got a kale caesar salad, just for a good helping of veggies! We called it a day after packing up our stuff.

This morning, I’d forgotten to turn off the alarm on my phone. Good thing it was more reasonable than my Tuesday alarm! It helped get us moving, as we headed down for coffee. We checked out of the hotel after that and headed to the airport. We filled up Dave’s growler of beer for super cheap at the airport brewery to bring home. We made it home as planned, and went home to drop our stuff off first. We headed to get the kids after that. I let myself in, and I walked into the kitchen where Peyton was watching TV. She looked up, then came over for a super big hug. She’d been calling me throughout the days that we were gone. She just picked up the phone and would call. She would never leave a message, but when my caller ID said “No caller ID” I knew it was her! She just wanted to talk throughout the day and check in to see where we were. I told her that I’d bring her back some day and would check out the zoo and other sights.

In two days, we walked over 30 miles er my phone!

Missing us

It was a typical Friday. Taking the kids to school, watching the assembly then heading to work for a few hours. I came back to school to get Peyton then I got a text from H’s mom that she was running late talking to the neighbors. I didn’t respond soon enough before she called. As I was talking to her, the dismissal bell rang and I saw H looking for her mom.  I went to tell her what was going on and she was okay waiting with me. She and Peyton were just chatting away.  Soon, T arrived.  We were talking about their tree falling into the house when V came up to us with her teacher.  I’d talked to her and her mom earlier and found out she was going to DC.  She was concerned because she told her mom that she would be done at 230 but it was only 1245.  She said she wasn’t going to CDC because of her trip but didn’t know what to do.  She saw me with Peyton and told her teacher that i could help her. I let the teacher know I’d help her and called Joy. She didn’t answer so I texted.  She responded she’d be right over. So H and Peyton chatted while T and I did until joy came in. I told T she didn’t have to stay but we were talking about Dave and my upcoming trip to her hometown. Soon, Joy made her way over and we all headed in our separate directions. Meanwhile my mom was texting me that she was in front of my house and to de-alarm the house. I did so and then headed home to find our key in the door 😫.

We all hung out after piano was practiced.  Until Dave got home early to send something out. We took Peyton to dinner since Brandon wanted to keep grandma company. Then we met up with the Tsui’s and the Chamkasem’s for dessert. The kids entertained themselves with board games while we all chatted.

Peyton was missing Brandon at dinner but she had more fun with the other kids.  She didn’t really talk much to Katie but she found friends in Tyler and Kyle with Connect Four and their phone games.  We called it a day by 9. Peyton reluctantly showered as Brandon came running down to hug me first but said, “I wanna hug daddy goodbye! Bye daddy!” Even during my hug. After Peyton showered, she came down to me as I was talking to my mom.  She whined about me leaving and buried herself into me. I think she was crying but she rebounded quickly as I tucked her into bed.  We’ll see how she does at practice today. Dave and I are really missing out on meeting this new coach! He’s the coach of the high school team down the street.  We gave my mom a list of her gear to make sure she wears everything and then brings it all back.

Back to school pictures

Peytons class.  Self portrait. She told me she took a long time and ran out of time. The teacher had to inform her about time management. We tried to see from across the room which one was hers. Dave knew right away because of the round face.  I was trying to look at her name in the corner. I think it does kinda look like her even with the smaller eye like I have. 😜

This one baffles me though hope wrote the same thing:

When I’d go to Brandon’s class, even at a young age, I’d see nice little girl hand writing on most of the girls’ papers. The I’d see chicken scratch and know  whose handwriting that was.  Now, I get the kid with the nice penmanship. Here’s a “little” about her.  The teacher warned us the draft may be a bit rough.

Brother problems

When you grow up with an older brother, you definitely have your work cut out for you.
Peyton’s next division will be working on sliding. So Dave bought her some sliding tights for protection. Think biker shorts that go under her regular baseball pants. Brandon has them too, but he wears “protection” in the sliding pants. So, Peyton pulls them up to try them on, then asks Dave, “Where’s my cup?” Dave looked at her and said, “You don’t need a cup!”

On other notes…Peyton will not have any traditional homework in the second grade. She will be instructed to play piano, enjoy family time, practice typing (she says she’s at the top level on the typing test, but was stuck all day on one level and crying about it until she finally got enough accurate and fast to achieve 4 stars; her teacher told her she couldn’t move on until she got 4 stars, even though the level opens up after you’ve achieved 3), or read together. So, we’ll have more creative ways for Peyton to do her work.

Brandon’s class has nothing but homework. As I sat at back to school night, after the presentation, the mom next to me turned and said, “I don’t know what you’ve been doing at home, but Brandon has totally changed since kindergarten.” I guess he used to pester / bully her daughter to the point she had to get teachers and administration involved. She added, “in a good way!” I think she could tell in my face that I was a bit horrified. Mortified. Embarrassed. I managed to squeak out, “Yes, he’s a work in progress. We work at it every day.” Well, that’s always “nice”. This was the second time this year that a mom has noticed and spoken out about it. Another was a mom whose kid is friends with Brandon, so at least it comes from a better place.

While I was dropping the kids off, I told them to not fight and to listen. The male teacher heard me and scoffed. I asked him, “Tall order, huh?” He said, “Yea, a little bit.” When I told Dave what had happened, he said, “These kids are clowns. They’re like Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.” I guess they are the notorious siblings on campus! UGH.

Oh, and finally, happy 15 th anniversary to Dave and me 🙂 We’ll celebrate over the weekend, but for now, we had to take a slice of pie at home after eating leftovers since the kids ate pizza and we didn’t get home until late. Good thing they’d already showered and were mostly ready for bed. Brandon informed us that he had to study for his vocab test, even before I had a chance to remind him since I saw it up on the agenda for tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s Friday!!
