Promotion Ceremony and beyond

On Thursday, the last day of school, we all went to school. Peyton was going to her class, as her other friends who had older siblings were not going to get checked out of the class. The promotion ceremony was from 830 to 10 am. I was talking to some parents, while Dave disappeared on me. I figured he went inside so I went inside to find him. He found an aisle seat on the benches. The ceremony was started by the vice principal since our principal is out for surgery now. Each class was presented by the teacher along with a few student speakers and then the introduction of the students, who all crossed the stage and shook the VP’s hand.

The ceremony was fairly low key, and then the students were dismissed to get some cupcakes. We took a few pictures, presented him with a lei, along with the one that CDC gave him as well as the Yins. He didn’t want to take pictures, he started getting teary saying he wanted to go home. I didn’t understand why he was so emotional. He said he just wanted to go back home and “get out of here.” I think he was getting sad to leave school. It was still early, too early to take Peyton out, so we took Brandon to breakfast. He cheered up a bit once he had more food in him.

I headed home then went back to go get Peyton. I took her early to her piano lesson, while I had her take a nap before softball. Brandon and Dave went out to take the Yins to the airport for their trip. When they got back, we all headed out to Peyton’s softball practice. We had a late night, as we went to dinner after.

Friday, Dave went to work, while the rest of us started summer vacation. In true form, we went to the library, as well as a trip to Costco. It was nice and quiet after they had their books. Friday was Brandon’s playoff game against the team that had beaten them earlier in the week. Peyton and I went to Violette’s house for a playdate. We had already scheduled it, so I dropped her off, and she asked if I was staying. I told her there was no need for me to stay, since they would be fine. They were going to have dinner and make brownies, to test run the brownie bar that they will have at their party next week. I went back to Brandon’s game and watched a nail biter of a game. It was 1-1 through six innings, when they went to a seventh inning. The visiting team started to score, and Brandon’s team couldn’t come back. He did started out the inning with a double, but that was it. He was really upset in losing, and cried! He’d never cared about it before. So we were surprised by his response. I left him with Dave and then I went back to get Peyton. She was doing well since she had napped that day, too. We lasted until 9 pm, then we came home so that we could get a good night’s sleep for camping the next day.

We went to sleep and then headed out for camp early Saturday morning. They were having a hike that would earn them 3 badges, so I didn’t want her to miss them. We left about 30 minutes later than I wanted to, and the drive was fairly easy except for the last 10 miles, which was curvy and windy. Though Peyton had only woken up, she did fall back asleep, so I was happy to not have to worry about her getting car sick. We arrived at camp, and I took a long, deep breath for having made it there safely. We packed up all our stuff and headed out in one trip! I wasn’t sure how far away we were, so I didn’t want to make more than one trip. The girls all greeted us and I put my tent up where one mom was leaving. This was big for me to bring all my own gear and put it up. Usually, Dave does it all. He gave me a quick tutorial the night before, but it had gone in one ear and out the other, so two other parents came over to help me out. Peyton got situated in her own campsite with her troop sisters. They had a space for her, and they rushed her in so she could get out to the hike with them. At some point, all would be in attendance, but they were in flux with some leaving and coming at different times. The girls headed out while I put our gear together and hung out with the other parents there. Lunch was low key sandwiches, which the parents helped prep. The girls came back and had lunch. Then, there was a creek walk or “swim” as most of the girls got thoroughly drenched. They were to paint water colors with the creek water, and they had finished up an elf house as well as a touch and feel game.

Some of the girls who got really wet took showers. There was warm water! I helped her get all situated and then had her re-bug spray. Half of the troop was preparing spaghetti and sauce, while Peyton’s half of the troop was practicing their skits for campfire. The parents also had a skit prepped.

After dinner was done, we all gathered around the camp fire for the bridging ceremony, where the brownie 1’s would “cross over” to brownie 2, while the four brownie 2’s would go to junior and get their green vests.

Then, the girls played games along with the adults before it was dark. We had dessert prepared by the dads, and then it was brushing teeth time. Peyton had her buddy with her, and they went to brush their teeth and potty together. I was not needed at all by her, as she did everything on her own. I was able to hang out and do my own thing. I did use the restroom twice more before bedtime, just once after midnight as the last of us stayed up around the fire. I thought I was free and clear, but I’d been drinking coffee most of the day as well as herbal tea at night, and I found myself awake at 230 am. I didn’t want to hold it, so I braved the dark and walked up to the restrooms on my own. I made it without freaking myself out too much, and then on the way back, I heard crying from the tent. It wasn’t peyton’s tent, and I didn’t want to wake anyone up, but the girl said she lost her teddy bear. I wasn’t sure if it was the girl who has night terrors or if it was another girl who was really awake. By this time, her mom had come over to check on her. I went back to sleep, as I was feeling much better by this time.

The girls had awoken by 645 am, and I was able to stay in my tent until 715 am before packing up our stuff. I had service the whole time, so I was receiving texts from Dave the entire time. i packed up mostly as Dave had told me of a softball game that was happening at 1230 pm. One team was playing at 8 am , so I knew we wouldn’t make that, but it was the older girls that were playing at 1230pm. It took awhile for us to pack everything up, as the scout leader had a FULL kitchen – sink with a pump to wash dishes. We took pictures of all the girls with their packs.

We headed home and I was more comfortable with the drive, knowing I was just back tracking what I’d already driven. Peyton was out in 5 minutes. When we got home, we both showered and turned around to drive down for the softball game. We saw our other friends there and hung out watching the loss. At least we know what she would see in future years. We headed to lunch together with just us after, but totally fell asleep in the car. Dave knew I was tired, and after lunch, I took yet another nap. I took Brandon with me to get groceries and we ran into two different friends of his. I told him no matter when I go to that store, I will see someone we know. One time it was even his teacher!

Here are the pictures which were taken over the weekend:

In my excitement about the last two days, I forgot that right before Brandon’s playoff game, dave texted me and then emailed me.     Brandon had gotten accepted to play on the travel ball team that he’d tried out for and then got called back for on Sunday!

Last week of school, part 1

Monday was a class play in Peyton’s classroom, and parents were invited to attend. I stayed around in the morning for the play, as Peyton mentioned she had tried out for a part, the announcer. They had been working on it since last week. She said three people tried out for announcer, but only two of them made it.

She didn’t want to bring any of it home to review, as they were working on it during school. I was encouraging her to memorize, but she said she had lots of parts to remember, as she was announcing the parts and their roles.

I got her a cute outfit in the morning, but then asked her to put a sweatshirt on. School starts at 815 am, but we were not invited in until 840 am. I met with the other parents outside and we chatted a bit before being invited in. I noticed she was still wearing her sweatshirt, but she resisted removing it. I didn’t want to push the issue, so I just ignored it. I missed the first second or so as I thought the camera was going already. Her teacher introduced her first, then she started.

I left for work after a quick hug, then when I got home, we got ready for Brandon’s game. Peyton had been left home alone for less than 10 minutes as Dave knew I was coming home. She was to practice piano and read so we could head out for Brandon’s playoff game. They were playing a team that they’d played closely all throughout the season. His friends were on the other team, so there was a lot of pride at stake. We arrived just as a player on the other team hit a homerun. Brandon did contribute with his bat

, but he also fielded a ball in left field, as it one-hopped right into his glove, and he fired a strike at the all star short stop, who then fired the ball to the catcher who tagged the runner (who started at second) out at the plate. It was an awesome play!

Unfortunately, even in extra innings, they could not pull off the defeat. It was tied through 7 innings when the bases were loaded, and then a base hit scored runs for the walk off. We headed out for dinner but not before saying hello to some of the softball coaches at the batting cages.

This morning, I dropped Peyton off at her line, then headed to Brandon’s class. The teacher was reviewing the rules with the students and announcing the carpools. She gave me the stack of instructions for the other parents who had not yet arrived. When she announced my car, the whole class erupted in hoots and hollering, as the three boys (mine included) were quite the handful and the other kids knew it. When the boys came to me, the one boy, T, said, “I’m crazy!” I looked him right in the eye, and said, “Not today, you’re not. Not with me.” He was calm and serious after that. I had already warned and requested Brandon’s help with any unruly kids in our car. He brought a deck of cards to play with his passengers. When we got to the car and buckled up, the boys did great playing 21 in the back. One kid, T, didn’t know how to play, but the other two had him deal and watch a few rounds before letting him join in. It was a peaceful 20 minute trip. I thanked them for helping me arrive safely, and we headed to the picnic area where we were to set up. The rest of the time was easy, as we, the parents, weren’t asked to do anything! One mom brought card and dice games to entertain the other moms, and I had conversations with a few different parents there. The swim hour was from 11-12, and then lunch was to be served after that. It was a peaceful relaxing time. I did go up to the pool at 11 am just to be another pair of eyes up there. There was only one lifeguard for a time, so the kids were to grab part of the wall until a second one was called in. Then, they did some jumping off the side of the pool, which they all enjoyed. Brandon and his friends didn’t last long, as it was too cold they said. I’m glad he did wear his goggles and shirt. He initially didn’t want to wear his shirt, as his friends were not, but I gave him “the look” as he would have had to wear sunblock, and he hadn’t put it on his torso, shoulders or back.

we all ate lunch there, then after some cleaning up by the kids, then we headed back home. I was heading back before the teacher, so she handed me her keys to open up the classroom. Most of the kids had come back before me even as I couldn’t back up safely with lots of kids walking in the parking lot. I opened up the classroom just after the bell had rung. I had the kids sit in their seats, as I wasn’t sure if it was okay to release them. I didn’t want to lose track of carfulls of people coming back, but she was just behind me by a few minutes. She was impressed I had the class all sitting down in their seats (She later told me at the pta meeting, more on that to come).

The kids were then dismissed, and then Brandon and I went to go get Peyton. I found out that some kids were already lining up their Wednesday morning middle school classrooms at the elementary school. The middle school doesn’t start until 930 am, so lots of the former kids come back to volunteer their time in classrooms. I don’t want Brandon to volunteer in the 5th grade, because he has a lot of 4th grade friends, and also not 3rd grade to avoid Peyton’s grade level. So we walked by his 4th grade classroom, and he asked his former teacher. She said she had 8 other kids who were interested, so he could be in the rotation if he liked it. She suggested he go to another teacher and ask. We walked over to his first grade teacher, who had just walked by, and he started with, “Excuse me, Mrs. L. I was wondering if I could help out next year for you on Wednesdays.” She was super excited for his help, and even asked if he had a friend who he’d like to work with. He said he didn’t, but I don’t know that he would need someone else. It’s best for him if he’s alone. Glad he has something to do, even though he said he’d be “working on projects” on his own. Riiight.

We came home, did piano, and Brandon showered to get the “creek” off of him. Then, shortly after, Dave came home. He was there to take Peyton to her batting cages practice. She took a quick nap, as she, too, had field day, but it was on campus. I fell asleep and stayed that way after they left! I woke up and was not alert nor oriented for a few minutes! I was super tired. Then, as I came to, and realized I should probably go get Peyton to take her to her final girl scout meeting of the year. She was in the cage when I arrived and smacking the balls. She said her coach said she hit about 3 homeruns! She came out and asked if she was late for the meeting, as she wanted to hit one more round of faster balls. She was hitting them at 40 mph, and she wanted 45 mph. She stayed to hit those, and then we left. Brandon and her teammate’s brother were both in the cage, too. Here’s her slow mo:

We arrived at the GS meeting just in time for her special surprise, the back packs for camping! They are to use those SOLELY for their gear. Everything is supposed to fit in the backpack or they are not able to bring it. We’ll see how she does with that missive. Luckily, it expands and there are many different straps for her to use fully.

After I dropped her off I attended my last pta meeting.  Here is what I brought:

Long Championship Sunday

This morning, Peyton’s game was at 8 am. Dave and Peyton left before 620 am, while I was just getting Brandon up. I was ready to go, but Brandon had to go to baseball travel ball call backs, so he had to be fully ready to go. After Dave left, Brandon said he couldn’t find his cleats. He said they were in Daddy’s car, which was parked outside the house. After searching a bit for the extra fob, I pushed the button to no avail. The battery on the spare fob, which is hardly used, was dead. I tried calling, but did not receive a call back from him, so we jumped in the car and made the 20 minute drive down to CMB. I unlocked the big car to see if by chance his shoes were there. He looked in the back and middle rows, and still, no cleats. So, he ran to get the keys from Dave. It was only 645 am or before when we arrived at the field. Brandon came back with Dave’s keys, and he told me, “Daddy said to make sure I bring the keys back.” I drove back home, with and eighth of a tank or less of gas remaining in the tank. Hearing Brandon’s words from Dave gave me an idea. When we got home, I pulled into the garage just after 7am, when the warmups were to start happening. Brandon asked me why I was doing that. I told him, “He wanted me to bring the keys back, so if there is gas in his car, we’ll just take his car back.” Brandon said, “Oh, okay!” He didn’t care because he now had his cleats, which were in the trunk of the car. We zipped back down the freeway and back to the field by 720 am. I set up shop, and got all our chairs set up under the canopy. The game started just after 8 am with Peyton starting on the mound. We were playing the younger version of our city’s team. She had 8 strikeouts in 3 innings, but she had 11 walks. She technically pitched a no hitter, as she held them to zero runs in the first inning. She walked in two runs in the second. Then held them to zero again in the third. She was relieved in the fourth, with her teammate shutting things down.

Then, she was up to bat. The other head coach was trying to recruit her for his team last night after our final game on Saturday, during the middle of his own game. We stayed to watch and support them, and she was standing next to me alongside the coach’s area in the dugout. He asked me, “Are you Peyton’s mom?” He introduced himself (in the middle of the game), and said he was working on some things for the next year. He wanted to let us know that he knows Peyton is still “of age” for next year.   He had already asked around and knew that we know one of his players (Hannah, from basketball) who have talked about Peyton. He supposedly asked another of our teammates how Peyton did in the tourney last week. When I told Peyton about playing for him next year with the younger girls, she asked me, “Why would I do that?” Dave asked why he would talk to me and not to him. I told him he’s just her coach. I am her  agent.   He reminds me of Herman Munster in stature and voice. He told his whole team, “GET BACK!” I giggled (you can hear it in the background). I think she took it on the first pitch! She hit a legit double, and then had some heads up base running!

She put 2 runs on the board just like that.

Dave caught it on goPro video.

This was a team that had 1) her basketball friend (whom she pegged in the leg with a pitch), and 2) a basketball rival. Either way, Dave did NOT want to lose to this team.
Luckily, it didn’t happen. I left the game to take Brandon to his call back. It was from 10-12 pm, and he had to be there 15 minutes beforehand, in a totally different direction from where we were. It took us about 20 minutes to get there, and when we arrived, he found his friend to warm up with. I talked to his parents for awhile before Peyton and Dave showed up. They were getting snacks for the next game, since it wasn’t planned ahead of time. They hung around for about 20 minutes, while Peyton iced up her arm. Dave wasn’t sure if it would help since she wasn’t complaining of any pain, but if nothing else, it would cool her down.

They left to go back for the 1230 pm game, and to warm up. She wanted to pitch, but Dave was hesitant to let her. He thinks her coach was asking him what he felt about it, but he wasn’t feeling so well about it. He wanted to give her a rest. I drove us back after Brandon was done. The game weas to start at 1230pm, we arrived at 1235 pm only to learn that the last game had ended late, so they didn’t start until 1245 pm. I didn’t miss anything! We were first up since we were the visiting team. This was a harder team, so it was tougher for us. We went one two three outs in the top of the inning; Peyton struck out.

She started off at shortstop and stayed there for the whole game. The girls we played against were not afraid to hit. One went right up to Peyton, who fielded it cleanly, and made a strong throw to Kelsy at first base. It was such a sweet play, definitely routine, which we do during practice, but it’s another thing to do during practice. Kelsy caught the ball with a pop and the batter was out!

The girls did the best that they could, but it wasn’t enough, and the team lost by one run 4-3. We packed it up and headed out for a late lunch. Later, the girls and I got together for Thuy’s birthday celebration. We enjoyed each other’s company over meat, with Jennifer on the grill. We missed out on Bonnie and Kathy who couldn’t make it this time.

Now, we’ll have a short week with celebrations for Brandon! But first, the second of his playoff games will be tomorrow!

Go Red Sox!

Today’s progress

Peyton is doing better with pitching. Today, she pitched a total of 89. We started at 930 for an 11 am game. Peyton launched some practice balls into the other team warming up. The rest of the team arrived at 10 as requested.

At warm ups, Peyton’s catcher showed me what she got for today.  She had to buy a thumb guard this morning because she said peyton pitched too hard. Her thumb pad was swollen!

She pitched two innings and two outs of the third.  She had 8 strikeouts and held them to 5 during her time in. Two runs for the first inning and 3 for the second.

We ended up in a tie.  She didn’t do as well batting with another bases loaded situation that she couldn’t hit.
We then went to the patent office from 1-4 for a Girl Scouts event. We learned about intellectual property such as patents, copyright and trademarks.

Stats

Peyton had the first of this weekend’s games today at 445.  We left by 310 as we had all the gear.  Dave stayed back with Brandon as it was his first playoffs game.

We arrived and I got her gear together building nets and doing what dave would.

Peyton wasn’t going to pitch but she was going to warm up just in case she was needed. K started to pitch, and she got five runs put up on her, mostly walks.  Our team started and got four runs.

Peyton came in the second inning and “only” gave up two runs.  She had some girls hit her pitches and one popped up back to her.  She had to run and field it with a backhanded glove.  I texted dave and he said the same thing I was thinking, how it’s her signature move now. She finished the inning with two strikeouts.

Peyton wasn’t doing well at the plate.  She struck out swinging.

A third pitcher started the third inning but walked the first three batters.  Coach then took her out and called Peyton back in.  She warmed up and threw junk pitches before she was presented her batter.

When she did, she threw her a strike.  She had been having problems being known as a one inning pitcher.  But she did better in that she had two strikes on each of the next batters she faced. Most of the time, she couldn’t close it out. She finally did grind out three strikeouts but not before they put up another three runs. Tough game especially to a team they split wins with last weekend. Hopefully we come back like last weekend!
