Last night, we went to go check out Peyton’s first softball coach’s team this year. They were playing against other friends. It was going to be cold, so we bundled up after having dinner. Dave was picking up Peyton’s new bat bag from her coach along with some other errands. I’d ordered something off FB seen on shark tank in January for Peyton’s birthday. It was two month lag time but it arrived just in time yesterday.
Here was the trial run (she’s not wearing a shirt underneath)
She was all packed up before we headed to the game.
The game was a tie and she got to see her friends while I talked to my mom friends. At one point, Peyton got up and started walking away. I was wondering where she was going, and then turned to see Dave and Brandon walk up. We all watched until the game concluded. We said goodbye to the families and then headed home.
This morning, Peyton practiced piano then Dave and Brandon left for baseball practice. I headed over to Peyton’s troop leader’s house. This was the landing zone for the entire troop. They got each kid a new sleeping mat to go under the backpacks. So we swapped it out and the girls got all their gear together including the pieces of their tent, which each kid would hike the 1/2 mile in with. There were four in Peyton’s tent. We got the kids all situated in the car and they headed out. I stayed behind to go to the last basketball game. I walked with the family whose daughter stayed behind for a hula performance. Coach Ryan saw me and said I was dedicated in coming out to the game without a kid in the game. The team beat the one team that beat them all season long. Well, they got their revenge today! 21-6. They lost last time 9-8.
After the game, I went home to the boys. Brandon had changed and we were headed to Livermore to watch the girls play! Everyone asked where Peyton was. They thought it was so strange for us to come out to support the team. In fact, Peyton did ask me what we were going to do after she was gone. I joked we’d get ice cream. But I told her that I’d go watch her basketball and softball games. She was incredulous. “What?!” I told her that i was just going to pretend that she was still around.
And we did! We watched them lose two games after winning the first one. Darn. Tomorrow they play at 8 am and we will not be going to that. Brandon has opening ceremonies for little league and then his first game and then travel ball practice. We’ll see how the team does and see if I have to extract her early.
she’s underneath all those chickens. Dave wanted her out from under there so she wouldn’t get shat on!

Friday, I went into work early, so Dave took the kids to school. I worked for a few hours, then went to Peyton’s class to help with their artwork. I picked her up less than an hour later, and we practiced piano and read. Then, we went to get Brandon from school. She was selling cookies, her last shift, from 4-6 pm. Brandon didn’t want to stay home, so he brought his book and came along. We were at Safeway, so we set up on one end of the store, while Peyton and the troop/cookie mom worked the other door. It was easier to separate mother/child units, which worked well the first hour. The second hour, both girls wanted their moms back, so they swapped places. It made the next hour go by really quickly! Peyton was up to asking EVERY customer if they wanted to purchase cookies. It was raining at that time, so she got some pity sales. People who would leave, turn around as she asked them, and then come back to check our her dwindling supply. We finished up by 6 pm, but not before I spotted some people inside trying to talk to Brandon. I asked him what they were asking him. The lady commented that he looked bored, and wanted to know why he was sitting there for so long. The man wanted to help translating for him, as he didn’t know English. However, Brandon doesn’t know Chinese, so I’m not sure how much help he was going to be. He was then chastised for not knowing Chinese. Must be his parents’ fault (insert eyeroll).
We headed home, and I got them fed. We were all so cold by then. They showered up, and Dave got home around 7 pm. We packed up our gear for our weekend away in Sacramento. Peyton woke up at 645 am, and we hopped on the piano quickly. We were done by 715 am, and then we got ready to leave. Dave was driving us to get out of the house by 8 am, as he wanted to avoid traffic. Their first games were not until 12 pm, but he rather just hang out and not stress. We received a text from the Yins that they were on the road, too. We stopped to get gas, rather got off and on the highway, since the gas was higher than Dave wanted to pay. As a result, the Yins came up right behind us, and we all stopped for gas, though a two different places. We all showed up to F’s game, which was the plan for us to pick up H and Ryan en route to the little girls’ game. We watched F’s game, and then we left to drop Brandon off at his game. My mom was there to meet us, and then we left him with a teammate to rush over to the start of Peyton’s game. I stayed with the younger girls, as I wanted to see them play.
They did a good job against the team they played. Tricia and F came up before the end of the game. I had been texting her updates prior to that. Ryan and H ended up going with them, while Dave, Peyton and I went back to Brandon’s gym, just two miles away. Luckily, our two were close, as F’s game was about 15 minutes away, without traffic. We all watched Brandon’s 2 pm game before our family of 4 went back to Peyton’s game at 4 pm. My mom took off from there. Peyton’s second game was tough. They had two tall girls on the opposing team. Peyton got stripped at the half court line and she was getting huffy. Then, on a fast break, she was pushed from the back and fell hard. With a few minutes to play, she went down in tears. Ryan talked to her quietly while she tried to regain composure to shoot her free throws. She played tougher after that, and picked herself back up. The game finished strong, with the best five on the court, prompting me to text Tricia that “Ryan means business.” They had 4:18 to play, and they were up by 4 points. Luckily, they hung onto the lead.
After the game, a mom/child pair asked me for a ride to the next destination, the pizza place. We were already taking H and Ryan there. Since there was a full car, I opted to NOT drive, and handed Ryan the keys. We got there safely, and the place was pure madness. It was ChuckE cheese on steroids. We got our hands washed, I started with the girls’ food, and then I helped myself through the buffet. Ryan met us after dropping us off, and washing up as well. The kids had only 45 minutes to eat in the party room, since we were late after the game. The third grade boys were already there. Brandon and Dave had gotten a ride back from the Woos, back to the hotel. Krissy was in charge of the team gift, so she went back to deliver that, while Chris came back to the madness that was the pizza place. After our time was up in the room, they kindly kicked us out, turned it over, and presented the kids with their play cards. We then went to F’s team’s room and hung out there. After their time was out, and we were kicked out of yet another room, we rolled over to G’s team’s room. Each room was being turned over and reconfigured for another team. The kids were all together, though at one point, I went to find Peyton as I didn’t see her with H. Ryan had H in line to turn in her points for prizes, so I panicked. H told me to find her in the bumper car area, but she wasn’t there, only two other teammates. I finally found her at the basketball hoop game. Shooting with F and her friend M. They were totally keeping an eye on Peyton, and joining in with them. At one point, F and M, both 8th graders, shot for a combined 80 points. Peyton and F tried once, and then again, and came up with 75. Peyton wanted to beat them, I’m sure! We finally went back to the hotel , where Dave had been drinking for quite some time by that time.
The whole organization was staying at the same hotel, pretty much taking over all 3 floors of hotel.
I had Peyton shower up as I unloaded our stuff. It was 10 pm by this time, so I texted Tricia to see if H would be coming down to the lobby. Brandon was already there with his team. My rules for Peyton:
1) no going to the pool, 2) stay out of other people’s rooms, 3) walk in the hotel, 4) no more food, 5) stay away from Brandon.
She only broke the “stay out of other people’s rooms” as when we went downstairs, H’s parents took Peyton to their room to hang out. Then the girls came downstairs to hang out with their teammates, but then returned to the big girls’ room. They had two rooms between the five of them, and F’s teammate stayed with G and F in the room on our floor. In fact, when G got back from the pizza place, she came up to me to ask what room she was in! I connected her to her mom to tell her which room she’d be staying in. I was chatting with one of the grandparents, the wife of Peyton’s coach last year. We chatted for over an hour, while Dave was talking to other parents. The kids were totally entertained, no tattling, no issues, for over two hours. They stayed up until midnight! I went to retrieve Peyton from the Yins’ room, and H asked me to take her back down to her mom. So I did that while leaving the big girls in their room. I didn’t know, but Brandon had retired to the room to put himself to sleep by 11 pm. He was over staying up, especially as his teammates all bailed. He can’t hang super late like Peyton can. We found him watching clone wars upon our return. He’d changed and gotten himself ready for bed.
I thought it was going to be rough in the morning, but it wasn’t too bad. We woke up just before 7 am, out of habit. Dave went to go get coffee outside of the hotel, while we slowly got ready. When he returned, he said that H was already downstairs eating breakfast with her parents. I’ve never seen Peyton get ready so quickly! Brandon had been ready to eat an hour before that, but I didn’t want him down there without supervision. Breakfast was included in our stay, so the whole team/organization was there. Brandon quickly went with his teammates, while we sat with Peyton and the Yins. During breakfast, the Yins asked Peyton if she wanted to join them for M’s game, and then F’s game. Then we’d all meet up for their game at 1230 pm. She was excited to finish breakfast and get ready to go with them. We had Brandon by then, and his game was at 1120 am, and since it was so early, we headed to visit a nearby bakery that one of our teammates had found.
Brandon’s game was close to start, then they started to pull away at the end. Dave was planning to leave by noon, so I headed to go with him, having my mom drive Brandon back to our game. She’d come for the two final games on Sunday.
Unfortunately, we missed Brandon’s spectacular performance! A dad texted me after I left that “Brandon is on fire! He had a three point play!” The moms around my mom had said that we shouldn’t have left such a good game!
They ended up winning 55-26. Brandon was allowed to announce his teammates at the mini award ceremony. They were all given towels, and he called out their names to accept their award

His son is in the third grade, and then he has a first grader and a 2 year old. We saw him both on Saturday and Sunday, and we hadn’t seen him “Live” since college or just after. We’d been keeping up with him via FB so I knew that his kid did look “familiar”.
Peyton’s opponent was going to be the host’s team. They had 2 fourth graders that we’d already been scouting the night before. Apparently, we were placed in a bracket with 3-4 graders. There was a #12, so they were going to put our #12 (Peyton) on her. But only one of their 4th graders showed up, just before game time. She was a big girl who could move, and definitely their best player.
I did hear a grandma during the game ask, “Who has #12?” We had one 2nd grader on the team, as we needed another player to sub out. She integrated into the team really well, and gelled with the girls after just a few minutes. She learned the plays, caught passes from Peyton, and scored 4 baskets in one game!
Peyton got lots of playing time with H both on the court and off. We had to say goodbye after the game was done, as Dave wanted to get back to work. We headed out, without lunch, though neither kid complained. We had snacks at Dave’s work, let the kids catch up on their reading as did I, and then after an hour of that, we played Charades on my phone. We were playing Disney characters, and we were all having a great time with that. Soon enough, Dave came back to get us in the snack area, and we headed out to get IN and Out. We had a great weekend of basketball and laughs. Now, the season is over, and we are headed into softball and baseball season. However, there is another team forming for another league, and we may try to make what we can. I guess H and P want to play together some more!
Final tally: girls 3-0. Boys 2-1.

Peyton has to bring something of relevance to your family, be it an heirloom, or piece of family history. She has an article that she used for school last year. I saw on FB that my cousin went back to the city where my dad was raised and took pictures of my grandparents, and my paternal grandfather’s parents.
I printed out the pictures, and she will bring it to the next meeting.

He is one of Yum Mah’s sons. Or the grandson of the “main character” of the story. This article would’ve been dated between 1953 (my cousin, the “grandson” in the article, is 6 years younger than my dad) and 1958 when my great grandfather died.
Peyton is excited to see Wrinkle in Time. She read it recently, and we were talking about it. She sounded like she was asking me a question, when she said, “Oprah is Miss Which?” I told her I didn’t know. She said, “No, Oprah is Miss Which.” Asking me? Telling me? I had no idea. Then, she said, “You know, ‘Miss Who’, ‘Miss Which’, and ‘Miss Whatsit’.” It’s been awhile since I read the book, clearly.
Today, she wrote a letter to an author about another book she just read. She read the book and finished it over the break. I saw a FB post that listed good books for GS girls. This was one of them, and if they write the author, not only will they get a letter back, they will get a patch (with the payment of $2).

Late Sunday night, after Peyton returned from a softball team tryout in Sacramento, I saw an email from her piano teacher. It started out by apologizing that Peyton did not pass her theory test. I had not yet seen the results, but I assume it was sent to the teachers first. I had to tell Peyton. I went to her room, as she had just gone to bed. I asked her if she was awake, and she said, “Yes.” I told her I had a bit of bad news to share. I told her that she didn’t pass her test that she took the day before. There was silence, and then it hit. The tears, crying, sobbing, and continued sobs. She was so devastated. I hugged her tight, and tried to come up with something that would console her. But I knew nothing I could say would help. I asked her if she wanted to read the email. She composed herself, dried her eyes a bit so she could see, and then slowly read it to herself. I told her she could try again next year as her teacher had recommended. 30 minutes later, after asking for tissues, she started to cry less. I asked her if she wanted me to stay with her. That cheered her up. I told her to move over (in her twin bed), and I brought my stuff over. I was trying to temper the situation, telling her that Thursday might be hard, since it was her lesson. I also told her that the recital might be difficult as that’s when they hand out the certificates. Not passing the theory test meant that she would not be receiving one. I asked her what she thought would happen. She suddenly put her arms up like the shrug emoji. I started laughing, she started laughing, and it was at that point, I know she would persevere. She did continue to sniffle herself to sleep, but I reassured her that I was not mad at her, that I still loved her, and that we could practice lots for the next time. She seemed determined to get back at it. Her teacher told her to smile at the fact that she got excellent, and 5+ on her songs and the performance aspect of her testing series. I also told her that if she didn’t make the softball team, there would be next year. She is still trying out one year ahead of schedule, as it’s a 2008 birth year team, as that’s the youngest it can start. She was getting a head start on that.
Here is her footage as Dave caught from the side:
Monday, she came home, and did not balk at being asked to practice. She even let me record the songs she played before she forgets the songs she worked so hard to refine the last 4 months:

While we didn’t get skiing in, we still had some time off. Monday, we used to go up to the City and deliver GS cookies to my dad’s work. He was just coming in from an Asian flight from SFO, so we picked him up when he landed and headed up. Once she sold, we turned around and came home. We did piano, reading, and then she took some cookies to walk around. Brandon wanted to come with us again, and this time, it was freezing cold. There was little yield, as we sold only 7 boxes in 1.5 hours. Both kids were ice pops when we got home. Dave was already home by then. Tuesday was more of the same; errands, practice for Peyton, and Dave came home early enough for us to make it on time. We even ate beforehand. Wednesday he stayed home for a delivery of our table top. The person who made it for us was delivering it, and it took quite awhile for him to arrive. We cleaned up the house and got ready for him to come over. After he delivered the table, we headed out to try Wahlburger’s. Dave was curious about it, so we drove down to check it out. I got the “Impossible” meatless burger, as a friend had recommended it. Dave and the kids got regular burgers. I thought it was yummy, but Dave still prefers In and Out. We walked around a bit to work off lunch, and then headed to see Black Panther. My goal was to stay awake, and the kids were asking me, too, if I was going to make it. I did really well, as it was a great movie, but then I let my guard down and fell asleep the last 15 minutes. Seriously, I was so mad! We came home for some olympic time, and then we called it a day. Thursday was more low key stuff, and we had to get piano lessons as regularly scheduled. Brandon was supposed to have practice, but it started raining hard during piano. Dave came home early for practice, and then ended up not doing anything since it was called off. Friday was Brandon’s eye appointment; now he has an astigmatism, and still needs help reading. So he will be getting bifocals. Poor kid. He had an option to not get them, but he preferred to be able to see more clearly both long and short distances. At least he will only use them in class, as I worry he would break them if he was wearing them all day long. Dave took Peyton to work to deliver cookies, since she got a big order (1 full case!). Later, I picked her up, and the lady ordered four more cases – that’s 48 cookies! Score! We came home, did errands, like load up on groceries, and then waited for Dave to come home.
Saturday was a big day; our basketball organization was hosting the jamboree this weekend. We arrived early to help set up, and Peyton’s team had the first game of the day at 9 am. We were alone in the gym, as opposed to the other two teams who had games side by side. Brandon worked on the line ups, while the girls were warming up. They did not keep score, but the girls and parents knew that our team had won. We had a one hour break, then the girls were back at it. This time, they were playing a better team, but our girls came to play! Peyton finally made a break away layup, and she made it look easy. I know it wasn’t, as she’d thrown it off the backboard in previous attempts, or would get called for travelling. She stole the ball and was going to take it down the left side of the court, but she made eye contact with her coach to make sure it was okay. She wasn’t as successful, but we did laugh at her for asking for permission to score. She got another basket from a pass from a teammate down low. She set her feet, took a second, and made an easy basket. She’s calming her nerves down and not getting as amped up as usual. After the game was done, we headed to have her take her piano test. She changed in the car. I told her to take her time, and that there was no rush, even though we were going to her friend’s birthday party. I dropped her off at the church so she could take her theory test. A bunch of nervous parents were pacing outside, but I didn’t want to add to that, plus it was cold! She was in there for awhile, so much so, that I’d gone through all my phone games. Then I imagined that she had fallen asleep! Or that she was frustrated and crying in there. I still didn’t want to “rescue” her, so I waited patiently in the car. She came out with a smile, just as she had when she finished her performance part last week. (We found out from the piano teacher on Thursday that she had successfully completed the performance portion with “EXCELLENT”s and a 5+, on the song that the teacher deemed “her best performance piece played”. So, she needed 90% to get honors (a small sticker and designation on her certificate). She came out after over an hour. She had no idea what time it was or how long she’d been in there. At least I knew she took her time! We headed over to the party, which she was late for by this time. She wasn’t fazed, as we were only 20 minutes or so late. She said happy birthday to her friend, and then joined them in play. They had some organized games, and I hung around to make sure Peyton didn’t lose it when she didn’t win. Her friend has the same temperament; very shy and quiet, but more relaxed in her own home and extremely competitive. Peyton didn’t win the first few games she played, but she kept going at it. I saw some wet eyes of disappointment, but she tried to hide it as best as possible. Also, not looking her directly in the eye helped. Her other teammate won the first two games much to the dismay of Peyton AND her friend, the birthday girl. Finally, they played a hot potato game with a beanbag (like music chairs), and Peyton won the second game. Now I knew I could relax, as she had won something. Then, there was slime. Lots and lots of slime. Slime ingredients were everywhere! She had her fuzzy jacket on, as it was cold, but she was sad she had gotten some of the glue and starch on her sleeves. I helped her roll up as best I could, but it was still everywhere. I helped clean up the table after the girls were all done, as the girls had returned to jumping. There was also tetherball, and I was happy to see Peyton come back over to me when the big 13 year old boy decided he wanted a turn. Normally, Peyton doesn’t back down to competition, but I’m happy to see she knows her limits. I was worried she was going to get smacked in the face and lose consciousness if she were to get hit! She also knew her limits and didn’t try any crazy flips in the trampoline. She did a sit jump, which was perfectly fine by me. We ended up leaving when the other two teammates did, as the moms were all cold. We headed home and she showered up. Dave and Brandon were at practice, and they arrived home about an hour later. She played piano, read, and then the Olympics were on. Here are the pictures from our week:
