Sunday
Sunday practice happened from 9 to almost 12. It normally goes until 11 am or so, but they were all out in force, with 14 of them, so they scrimmaged with each other. Peyton’s friend Peyton came out to practice. She was with the team in fall, but is playing rec for spring/summer. We drove separately because Dave had to take Brandon to basketball at 12 pm. It started to drizzle when we first arrived, but these coaches would not be bothered by a little precipitation. We stayed under the building for the first few minutes, the rain stopped, and then we headed to watch the girls.
When practice was over, they handed out uniforms and then, we headed home to eat lunch. She changed into her sequin dress that my mom got her for Christmas, then she practiced to make sure she didn’t have any issues with chafing. She put her shoes on and made sure she could still use the pedal. She played her songs, and then when she felt comfortable, she was ready to go. We found the house within 10 minutes, since it was close and we sat inside the car for awhile. I walked her to the garage, and there was a sign that said kids go through the door, while parents stay outside. I walked her to that door, and someone was coming out and invited her in. I walked back to the car, and reparked so I could be a bit closer to the door. I waited for her to start at 210 pm, however there was someone that went in at 215 pm. No one had come out until 220 pm, so I figured they may be running behind. I continued to wait, and at about 235 pm, she came running out with a big smile. She said she didn’t make mistakes on the songs or her technique, and that the teacher liked her dress. She said she saw a part of her dress before she took her jacket off, and then said, “Wow, you’re really sparkling now!” She said she didn’t make a mistake on her sight-reading, and that the teacher was talking aloud and said, “Okay, I have to mark ‘you passed’ and ‘good’.” She didn’t know what she was referring to, but she thinks she did well. Next week, she has to go to the theory portion of her test. We went home, and she changed again into her girl scouts clothes. Brandon was home from the basketball game, however Dave was keeping him from the baseball practice he had. He was coughing, and sucking wind in the game, so he didn’t want to subject him to the practice. He instead went up with us to go sell cookies in front of the coffee store. Peyton was very excited and said, “OH, cookies and coffee!” Like what do you know about coffee and cookies?”
It was rather cold even though I was wearing two layers. I told her to put another pants layer on, but she refused. She did complain about being cold after the first hour. I reminded her of my warning, and she didn’t complain after that. We wrapped up right at 6 pm. We went to eat sukiyaki and udon with hot tea for the adults.

Today, we hung out at home until my dad texted that he was at the airport. We left just after 8 am to go get him. Then, we took him to his office, where Peyton delivered the cookies that she had pre-sold. We waited for the final customer before heading over to my grandma’s house to sell her some. My aunt bought cookies, and we ate lunch before driving back. Peyton passed out, while Brandon played in the backseat quietly. Both were given their leicee, as well as both of their birthday presents. They were excited to put their money away. They read and then we all went out to sell cookies in the neighborhood. She didn’t do that well, but perhaps she did get some pity sales since it was so cold. One older lady told her to come inside the house (I watched her like a hawk) while she got her money because she said it was so cold outside. Meanwhile, Brandon and I froze our tails off while we waited outside with the cart. She sold to some of the pet owners at the school, but not before one of the dogs “marked his territory” on our cart wheel! YUCK! We got home and Dave arrived home with groceries shortly after. Tomorrow will be Peyton’s MRI study!
A “Free” Saturday
Last night, we were looking at our schedule and saw that only Peyton had an 8 am basketball game. As soon as they said that, there was an email sent out to the team from her coach. He coaches high school, and he was inviting the team out to watch his team against another HS team in the area. We were all in as the other team has a daughter of one of Peyton’s first competitive coaches. The home team has a daughter of Peyton’s most recent summer coach. So, we knew at least two players, and three coaches that would be there. We showed up after basketball, and after breakfast. We hadn’t had time to enjoy breakfast, leaving the house at 730 am. They were playing the first team where H and P missed, and the teams tied at 18-18. This time, H was out but Peyton was there. The score was 24-4. The refs told Dave to back off on defense. He was already laying back by having other girls run point. But backing off on an aggressive team wasn’t going to teach the kids anything. Sure they didn’t double team, which they aren’t supposed to do anyway. But even then, the other team wasn’t getting any shots to fall. The coach is a rather aggressive one and it was nice to see him get riled up by this. He was shouting at his players while Dave could barely be heard from the stands. I updated Tricia throughout the whole game and when it was done, Dave got a text from Ryan. We saw one player who used to play with us. She switched teams and got to be point guard which she always asked to play. Even Brandon made the comment, “She got her wish. She’s playing point guard.”
When we arrived, her basketball and softball teammate had just pulled up as well. Her dad was the coach, and I wanted them to go watch the game from inside the dugout if they were allowed. He was busy on the field, so he didn’t notice their attempt to go in the dugout. We watched from the visitor’s side, as we had a whole family there, in the sun. Toby kept looking at his watch, since he had to leave. We asked him where he had to be, and he said “Volleyball practice” at their home high school. We told him that Brandon had played in middle school. He joked that he should come with him to run practice. We had already been trying to plan a reunion to Dave and Buster’s, so we planned to do lunch there after the game. So, he said it was totally fine for Brandon to come with him and shag balls with him if he wanted. Brandon shrugged and headed out with him, while his #2 daughter made a game time decision to go along with them. So, we were down a kid and able to watch the rest of the scrimmage. It was a slaughter, and we got to watch our friend’s daughter pitch. There were some good plays, and it showed how the girls all chatted to each other. We are working on that aspect with respect to Peyton’s game.
When the game was over, Peyton was asking me if we could take her friend, the current coach’s daughter. She had wanted Peyton to come with her to their house, but when she found out we were going to D&B’s she wanted to go, too. So, we took her along with us, and met the other family back there. Brandon came in later, and we all ordered lunch while the kids played games together. Peyton melted down when I told her to introduce her teammate to her old coach and his family, even though she was excited to do so when I first told her that was the requirement in having her friend come with us. The three girls all played together, while Brandon was given an unlimited card for video games. Later, the girls joined him when they ran out of credits for ticketed games. After a few hours, the kids all cashed out with prizes. We said good bye to the other family, and then we walked around for a lap, doing some shopping. We went back to use the unlimited video game card for another half hour or so. Then, R’s mom texted to see if they needed to pick her up. I told her we were on our way back and could drop her off. Her dad came out to greet us, and then we said we’d see him all over again tomorrow for practice. Never a dull moment! We came home to shower up, and Peyton practiced for her piano test tomorrow.
I hope she does okay, as she is having second thoughts about skipping one full level over last year. She tested at level 2 last year and was eager to skip 3 and go straight to four. Hopefully she made the right choice.

The report back on Brandon was that he has a soft touch, can pass well, and is learning how to dig out tough serves. He got to fill in on the scrimmage as the other boys were leaving from practice. Coach had told him that he may have some more experience than some of the kids out there today, who were new to the sport. We told him he was being flattered, to which he said, “I know.” One kid was asked NOT to serve it to him, but it kept coming to him anyway. Luckily, the kid is a good sport, and he didn’t let it bother him. Glad he was able to put some work in to what may be his go-to sport in high school!
Long Weekend
The weekend was the same amount of time, but the activities were aplenty. We started Friday night with practice for Peyton. On Saturday, we started at 8 am with Peyton’s city league game. Ryan came to pick us up, and we expected a whole vanful of girls, however H was sick. She was sick for Friday night’s practice, and they wanted to keep her healthy for next weekend. She was feeling well, changed her clothes, got her hair done, then sniffled, and that was the dagger that kept her home. She was crying as her dad left the house. So sad! Peyton played minimal time for Saturday’s game, but she did manage to score. It wasn’t the same without her “partner in crime”. From that game, we headed straight up to the city. Poor Brandon had his first baseball game, in the first tourney of the season. His game wasn’t until 245 pm, and Peyton’s games were at 11 am and 1 pm. We had another family pick him up from home. They originally were going to pick him up at 115 pm, so he could make it just to one hour before the game for warm ups, but they realized their second son had a basketball game around 12 pm. So, they picked Brandon up at 1115 am (he was updating me by text), took him to get lunch (which we’d given him money for), and then the two boys hung out at their house, playing with nerf guns. Peyton’s game was tough in the City. It was a team that they’d played and beaten before, however at this weekend’s game, Peyton’s team had 6 kids, while the other team had 12 kids! They had fresh substitutions with each break. Well, it was a sad game, and this time the score was being kept by the scorekeeper. I think it was 22-5, and Peyton scored with 1:50 to play. Oof.
We had a one hour break. We had spam musubis for snack, and enjoyed some outside time. It wasn’t as warm as the previous week, but it was still pleasant out. I chatted with my pharmacy school classmate, whose husband went to high school with one of our team’s dads. Small world. The second game was much better. Peyton’s teammate scored the first 4 baskets! There was lots of clean passing and more scoring involved. They ended up pulling out the victory with 22-14.

After the games, we went to get some pork buns, which were hot at the time, then we headed back home. Peyton and I took a nap on the way back down. When we got home, we quickly changed, grabbed warm clothes, and headed off to Brandon’s game. We got there in the 5th inning, and it wrapped up within 20 minutes. The team lost, but some of the teammates went to a local restaurant to hang out in the 2 hour break that they had.
The sun went down for the second game, and luckily, the game was attached to the clubhouse. We watched the first half from inside. Then, Dave was outside, telling us to come out. Peyton was doing homework, which another dad had noticed at dinner and commented, “Is she doing homework?” (She had a laptop and her Native American project notes.) I told him that she was too busy during the week to get this done, so she had to get it done over the weekend. He admired her for her hard work, especially on a Saturday. What he didn’t know was that this third grader has more homework than her sixth grade brother. She finished up Saturday’s work and was able to watch from the grandstands.

Here is the hit we saw from up high.
My mom was able to watch the game from the camera that was broadcasting the game. The team was up 11-3, but somehow squandered the lead in an unfortunate 2 out rally. Time ran out, and the game was called when the final run came in, for the other team to go up 11-12. Darn. But that meant that the team would play again at 245 pm.
The kids got to bed by almost 10 pm, and up by 7 am to do it all over again. Peyton went to softball practice at 9 am. We all went, but in two cars, since Dave had to leave to take Brandon to his basketball game, in SF, by 1230 pm. Peyton practiced from 9 to 1130 am, while Dave left around 11 am. We finished up with practice, and she went home to practice piano and eat lunch, as she had her piano performance party from 1-3 pm. Brandon had his baseball game at 245 pm, and he arrived with 15 minutes to spare, since he was coming from SF. Sheesh, these kids. Peyton’s coach told me she’s not allowed to miss practice anymore, as “it’s better when she’s here.” I didn’t know what that meant, but I guess it’s a compliment. And that she needs to know these things that they are teaching her.
I dropped her off at piano, and I went to get my steps in. I walked around the middle school, and it started to get cold just before I needed to leave to get her. They were done with their playing and enjoying snacks. We left from there to get to Brandon’s game. It was super cold, and even after bundling up with the blanket that now lives in my car, we were freezing. We had both our hoods up and tied tightly, under the blanket, with Peyton on my lap, and it was still cold. “Luckily” the team was put out of their misery with a mercy-rule 15-0 loss after less than an hour. We headed to all you can eat Korean food after that, and both kids ate their share! Brandon enjoyed the squid and wanted to order a second plate (which we did). Peyton was happy to eat it as well, and even had some spicier meat since it was so tasty, and she was so hungry. We wrapped up the evening with some Olympics before the kids went to bed. Another weekend in the books!so far from the boy!
Birthday Celebration
Wednesdays are Brandon’s late start to the day, where the kids aren’t supposed to be at school until 930 am, and then they have their recess first until class begins at 950 am. He normally goes to Peyton’s school to volunteer for their second grade teacher. I emailed his teacher last week to let her know I’d be taking him out to breakfast.
I told him the night before, and Peyton said, “What? He gets to go to breakfast?” Uh, she got to see Ariel at Disneyland for her birthday. Lest she forgot. I told him to think about where he wanted to go, and he immediately said, “Crepevine.” We’d been for Peyton’s birthday awhile back, so he was making up for lost time.
We all got up at our normal time, and then Dave took Peyton to school, while Brandon and I made our way to downtown MTN. There was no line of course, so he knew what he wanted right away – the Purple Stack. I threw in a side of chicken apple sausage for protein. He said he wanted to eat the whole thing. I suggested that we split it, and that I would eat slowly, and if he caught up to me, that I’d give him more. Well, that never happened. His eyes were larger than his stomach. He got to five bites left, and he just gave up. We sat there awhile longer, and he was able to finish up. He had brought his magic book that Auntie Julie had gotten him, and he loved reading it! He also didn’t want to be late. He asked me, “What time is it?” I answered, “8:10 am”. A bit of time passed, when he asked again, “What time is it?” “8:20”. Really, we had plenty of time! After we’d finished, it was only 830 am, so he wanted to go home. While we were driving, there was something on the radio about someone being “legally blind”. He had never heard that phrase, and he asked me what that meant. Then he asked, “So what does it mean to be illegally blind?” His first 12-year old funny 🙂
Regarding his desire to go home, I asked him if he needed to poop (since he usually rushes us to get home for this), and he said no. But as soon as we got inside, he ran upstairs. I asked him why it changed?! He said, “Well, you said, ‘Poop, so.'” Touche.
I dropped him off at school and headed to work. I worked until school was out, then drove home to get Peyton. Brandon was going to walk home, since I wanted to put in a rounded amount of time, and that meant that I wouldn’t be back in time to get him. As I was headed down our street, I caught a glimpse of him. He saw me right away, and after it was safe, he crossed the street to join me in getting his sister. We got to CDC, picked Peyton up, and then headed back home to finish up homework. Dave was trying to figure out where to go for dinner while he was on the train coming home. We asked Brandon, and he answered, “Olive Garden”. Dave guessed why – because of the never-ending pasta? Brandon nodded. We didn’t know where one was, and because I had a book training for school, I had to be back at school by 730 pm. So, Dave asked me if we should return “to the scene of the crime” (Frankie, Johnny, and Luigi’s, where Brandon had almost choked on a piece of prosciotto that he didn’t cut properly, on a family outing with the KP families for a birthday gathering many years ago. He was probably 4-5 years old. Dave had to finger sweep and pull the meat out of his throat because he tried to swallow it without properly chewing it). So, I asked Brandon, “Do you want to go to Frankie, Johnny and Luigi’s?” He said, “So I can choke again? No thanks!” I guess he remembers. So, we didn’t really pick a place, but I had to leave to get cookies with the cookie mom.
The kids and I were picking up more cookies at the Cookie Mom’s house, and Dave met us there. We dumped my car off at school and headed to an Italian place we’d never been to before. While we walked in, there was another family from school, whose older daughter had the same birthday that Brandon did. The girl, Thea, said, “That’s the boy I was talking about!” She is a drama girl, so she was pretty loud. Peyton is friends with the younger daughter (she’s at cdc, in drama, and a 5th grader), and she ran up and said hi. I wished Thea a happy birthday. They returned the same wishes for Brandon.
We sat separately, and we ordered our food. The food was yummy; the boys had rigatoni, Peyton had the kids’ rigatoni, with chicken, while I had ravioli/spaghetti with pesto. When dessert was ready to be ordered, Dave asked the server if there was anything for birthdays. He offered Spumoni ice cream. Brandon was totally fine with that; they even brought it out and sang to him! Peyton, Dave and I shared a chocolate dessert. While the servers sang to him, the girls ran out from behind the wall and giggled at the sight.

I love his giggly face; that hasn’t changed in 12 years.
The kids dropped me off at school, but I was still 30 minutes early. No one was in the library yet, so I headed home to help with bedtime. Peyton had piano to practice, and she had her report to finish up. She did all of that, while I turned around and got back to school. By then, there were attendees already inside the library. I stayed for about an hour before returning home to sleeping kids.
We haven’t gotten him anything yet, but there are so many things going on, fortunately, he’s our easy going kid. He is happy to have time alone with us. Here is his list of 20 questions:
I did ask if he had any friends who were girls who would make the friends list. Grace made it with a questionable prompt by me. But when I asked if other girls made that list, his answer was “No”.
And he wants to work alongside my dad. And loves his dads pancakes. I love this kid.
Super Bowl Sunday
Peyton started out the day with piano and reading. She then went to attend her cookie shift from 10 to 12 pm. We were planning to bring fruit to the Super bowl party that we were attending, so since she was selling at a fruit/veggie stand, we picked up a watermelon, two pineapples and some grapes. When we got home, the boys were already out at baseball practice. We ate lunch, then we went out in the neighborhood to sell cookies before other people’s Superbowl parties. She was able to sell about 10 or so boxes. We set a timer for 1 hour. We went to her friend’s house, and her dad opened the door. He declined buying any, but later, we saw her friend again, and she ran over to Peyton to say hi. Her mom saw us talking and came over to chat. I’d never met her before, so Peyton told her what we were doing. She said she’d buy a couple of boxes! Score. We also saw a CC dad from the booth sale earlier, and he didn’t buy, but later, his wife bought from Peyton as I said a hello to her. We got home, and Dave was already home, having cut up all the fruit. We headed over to the party, this time bringing Brandon’s scooter and helmet, as he borrowed a scooter WITHOUT a helmet last time. Peyton had hers at home, as I didn’t want her interacting with the older boys. The kids had a good time, playing out front, out back, and in between. At some point, Peyton went outside, but came in to say, “Brandon’s bleeding!” (The story is that he was riding the scooter with one hand, while riding with a nerf gun in the other, then hit a rock and got road rash on his knee and elbow. He didn’t cry until antiseptic was sprayed on it by the host’s dad.) Dave went out to inspect, as I heard “blood” and continued talking to the moms at the couch. We had bets going, with squares based on “first blood”, “first quarter”, “second”, “third” and final scores. We were only going to stay for the first half, but because the kids were having fun (except for the blood, which toned him down) and there was money to be had, we stayed for the full game. Peyton was mesmerized by JT’s performance, watching on her own the whole time. She’d been hanging around me or outside for most of the time, but not during half-time. We said our goodbyes at the finale, and most people started to leave. Brandon said bye to his friends, and he’d see them Monday at school.
We did our grocery shopping all together after the game, and headed home to get ready for the school week. What a day!
Just another day…
This morning, I got up early and needed to get a gift card for the kids’ friends’ oldest sister. She’s turning 14 on Tuesday, and we were going to see her possibly today. I walked to the starbucks, after getting the okay from her mom, to get it for her. I thought I had more time, as Peyton had her basketball game at 8 am, but it was 15 minutes away and we were to show up at 745 am, and it was already 730 am on my walk back, I quickened my pace. As I was within our complex, Dave texted “I’m leaving.” Just then, the car turned the corner, and I hopped in with my coffee in hand, stuffing the envelope that I’d made with my card. We made it in time for me to do Peyton’s hair, because I left before doing that. The kids warmed up, and I got the roster all set with the scorer’s table. The game got off to a start, and the girls were hitting every part of the rim except the bottom of the net. Hope had asked her dad if she and Peyton could play on the same set of five on the court. He was only going to have the girls play a minimum amount of time, as they were going to be getting enough basketball in the afternoon, but the other team was hanging in. Peyton and Hope played much more time than expected, and in the end, the team lost 10-11. It was so close, with a shot put up by their tallest teammate with seconds to go. The girls were in good spirits, knowing they’d see each other in “a couple of hours”. They had snacks, and then everyone headed home in a hurry. Peyton ate quickly, changed, and got into her girl scout gear – her cookie shirt, vest, hat and glasses. We went to the store to sell cookies for two hours. I had lubed her up in sunblock (it was unseasonably warm, in the mid-70’s or warmer!), and she was a bit sluggish for the first hour. She did come around for the second hour, and they sold quite a few. We were relieved first, since we had arrived to our shift first. Yay for being early!
We came back home, and she finished up what food she started before cookie sales, and then changed again, this time for team #2. We picked up H and her dad, and all headed to the city together. We found parking and found the team up at the college. Since they are college courts, they are SUPER long for the girls. They played here last year, and they were winded then.
Coach asked Brandon to help him with lineups and gave him pointers as to how to keep things organized. It was a logic puzzle as some girls were coming late (without an exact amount of time HOW late), and then one, not at all. That threw him for a loop. He was strategizing, which girls could play where, and P and H were trying to get him to let them play together. He was trying to not have Peyton play at all, like reverse “daddy ball”. “Brother ball” is vindictive, and purposely put the two point guards on separate teams, so that they couldn’t feed off each other. There were a few 5 minute periods where they played together (out of 40 minutes total), but most often, they did not.
Brandon stayed on the bench for the most part, though my dad came to watch game #1, so he ran to get him some food. He didn’t stay long, as he was just leaving work to stop by briefly.
The girls had roughly an hour and a half before the next game. The first game finished at 330 pm, and the next one was 530 pm. I told H and P that if they slept, I’d give them $5. They actually tried, but there were teammates dribbling the ball around them. I thought if Peyton had five minutes of quiet time, she’d actually go to sleep. H was right there with her, telling me she’d be okay sleeping, too.

It lasted only two minutes, then they slowly watched the action from the floor before getting up for a rousing game of four square. This went on for almost an hour, despite attempts to get them to relax. Their second team was one that they played (and beat) last week. Though no score is kept, a score is kept internally. They were not as aggressive as the first team, which was all over the girls! Peyton kept complaining about being hacked, and hit in the neck, swatted all over. Definitely more aggressive watching City girls! They actually played better in the second game, as the other team wasn’t as aggressive, but it was a closer game! Until the last 10 minutes, when Peyton seemed to go on a spree!
She didn’t score at all in the first game, but with on-lookers from our other teams, cheering the team on, she turned it up to another gear. She scored 4 baskets in the final few minutes! The team finished with 16, and Peyton had half the points. H had made three baskets in the first game. They really play well together, and it shows on the court with cleaner passes, and recovery should the pass be errant. H has the most hustle in her, with lots of soccer conditioning! By the end of the second game, the girls all had rosy, pink cheeks. They were all going to sleep well tonight.
Here’s what I captured:
I thought the girls would fall asleep in the car like they had before, but nope, they were quiet initially, then super chatty and singing with Brandon.
Brandon had practice at 730 – 9pm, so we dropped him off, took H and R home, and then got poke bowls, before Dave dropped us off, then went to get Brandon. Peyton read her 30 minutes while eating dinner, while I practiced piano with her after her shower. She was just finishing up by the time the boys came home, and then Dave quickly ate and headed out to see his friend. Peyton missed a softball friendly today, but hopefully that’ll be the last thing she misses for awhile. FOMO is real.
Unexpected Visitor
While at piano, Peyton’s softball coach, who has a daughter on her basketball team, asked me to pick his daughter up to bring to basketball practice. He was 15 minutes away at the high school coaching the softball team, just after piano, but if I waited any longer, it could take even longer to get there. I texted Brandon, who walked home with our neighbor, and asked him to clean up the downstairs a bit from all his stuff. He told me he had finished his homework. We arrived and watched practice a bit. One of Peyton’s former teammate’s older sister was there and said hi to her. She was super sweet to her. We watched practice for a few minutes, then I got R and brought her back to the house. Brandon was there, and the house was relatively clean. For patients having heart ailments discount viagra is usually not preceded by any visible symptom, thus leading the victim to a sudden death! I got the girls a snack, some fruit, since I know R has a nut allergy. Peyton and I changed, then I brought three kids back to the gym. Ryan was already there, and so the kids were all shooting around before he corralled them to start practice. I was happy Brandon could follow directions. I asked him what he did with his stuff. He said he gathered all the loose stuff, and put it into my mom’s spare room and shut the door. Nice move, dude.
Recap
Last Sunday, January 21st, there was a marathon friendly game against another of the SJ teams. The other team arrived at 830 am, while we rolled in around 845 am. Warm ups began at 9 am, and that took another one hour before the game started. Peyton had basketball practice at 12 pm, and we thought the game was going to be over by that time. Turns out, they were planning to play a full 6-inning game! Dave and Brandon had gone out early to get donuts for the team/parents, came back home, and then we both drove over to the field (back in the direction of the donuts). The innings were capped at 3 runs. The two starting pitchers each started with two innings apiece. Dave and Brandon left at 1130 am to make it to practice. There was an intermission shortly after they left, and the game resumed, with Peyton pitching the 5th inning. I’m glad we didn’t leave! Ends up we totally missed the practice, and didn’t leave the field until 130 pm! We all met up at home and rested before Brandon’s basketball game at 330 pm. We had a mix up in where the game was, but we finally made it to the right gym. After the game, I went home to meet Michelle, and we headed to the mall for December and January birthday dinner/celebration. We had yummy meats and desserts shared among us.
The following week, on Saturday, we had pictures, and then Peyton’s game at 12 pm. Brandon and I went to work out at the gym, with him doing some treadmill with me. He’s not like his sister, who, the night before, while the boys were at basketball practice, pushed me to run 2 miles on the treadmill, moved to the elliptical for 20 minutes, and ended with the bike for 20 minutes. She ended the elliptical 2 minutes shy of her goal, as she leaned to get my ear buds, and ended up slowly falling over. I caught her moving arm, but that only helped stop the machine from running over her repeatedly. She slowly recovered, but I thought it best to cut it off there. Luckily, it didn’t stop her from getting on the bike and enjoying suduko. She had the ear buds by that time, and when she couldn’t figure out the numbers, she shouted to me that she was stuck.
For this game, the score was much lower like 14 to 8. We were much closer until the final few minutes of the game, when the team “pulled away”. Ryan later found out that they used a larger ball than the girls had been used to playing with. Oops.

Later that night, Peyton and I had tickets to the Little Mermaid, while Brandon was going to attend Peyton’s practice and help run it with Dave. We headed to the show, parked and found our friends. Peyton went with H, and the older girls by the front lawn, while I hung out with the parents. She decided to sit up on top with the girls, while I sat on the floor for a better view. G was one of Ariel’s sisters, and sang beautifully. At intermission, Peyton, who had had a cough, came to me, and sat in the chair, starting to cry. I thought maybe the girls had said something to her, but she said she didn’t feel well, her head and stomach hurt. I asked her if she wanted to go home, and she nodded, more tears flowing. I convinced her to get her water bottle, and then came back. I quickly apologized to Tricia, dropped off flowers for G, and I left with Peyton. I carried her back to the car, got her buckled, and straight to bed. She got 12 hours of sleep, and in the morning, bounced awake! She had two jamboree games to play, and she was ready to go. THe first was 9 am and the second at 11 am. We went there, and saw Tricia and Ryan pull up in two separate cars. They were headed in two different directions after the game, and I didn’t want to carpool as I knew Peyton may be infectious. We missed softball practice, but both games were won (though we technically don’t keep score). Brandon stayed home because he was attending a birthday party. The host’s mom was going to pick him up from our house. Brandon was nervous that she wouldn’t come, that something would happen, or that he would be missing his phone or gear. He was all packed up when we left. We came back home from the games and picked him up a bit early. The host’s dad said, “Oh, you have to leave, sorry, no cake for you.” It was like he was trying to get rid of him!
This weekend is similar, with practice for Peyton tomorrow night (Friday), three games on Saturday, with a cookie sale booth in between (with a trip to the SF to play games). She’ll miss softball again, because they changed from Super Bowl Sunday to Saturday. Sunday, Peyton will sell cookies, while Brandon has baseball practice! Never a dull moment. Will be happy to watch the game knowing our weekend will wrap up after that. Phew!
Stellar Day!
We woke up early for Peyton’s 8 am game. Dave and she left first, while Brandon and I headed over to the gym a few minutes later. Coach wanted them there at 720 am, however when we got there, we weren’t allowed in the gym yet. That prompt a rude awakening from our coach to the gym coordinator, who was headed over. They negotiated 10 minutes of warm up time inside the gym. In the meantime, Dave went over the game plan with the girls in the lobby of the gym. They were playing against Peyton’s former softball teammates, who had decided to play together and NOT with Dave and Ryan. So, we wanted to crush this team! Two of the softball girls (from the league that we left) had never played basketball before, and the girl that was choosing them over us is shorter and slower than Peyton.
Peyton and H play on opposite teams of 5 within the team. So, they were assigned to guard that girl depending on which team was on the floor. The other team only had 8, so C, our friend on the other team, got to play a bit. She was one of their best ball handlers, but she couldn’t get through H and P. H’s mom noticed that C was frustrated as the ball was stolen quite a bit. Peyton was on her game today, mouth guard in, and ready to play. H’s mom gave her a knowing pep talk before the game to which Peyton gave a resounding nod.
They started out strong and never looked back. Peyton was capped after she scored 7 baskets. Then she was relegated to passing. Her current softball coach congratulated her on being a team player, as she had an open shot and passed to her teammate. I don’t know that he knew she had been shut down by the scorer’s table. But at some point, she was crying. Dave had to leave midway through to take Brandon to baseball evals. So at the end, when everyone was congratulating her on the win, she was teary-eyed. Ryan said he didn’t know what was going on, and that Dave didn’t either before he left. I got her in the car, and asked her to tell me what happened. They won 44 to 26, so there was definitely nothing to cry about. She still wouldn’t tell me, so as I was eating a mint, I bribed her with one. She started talking like Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth was around her! She said that there was a whistle blown, and that she stopped, but the other team, namely the point guard, didn’t stop and blew right by her, scoring the basket. She said Dave told her “you are dumb.” Then she started crying again. She made me promise not to tell Dave, but I was a bit upset by this, so I had to tell him, and let her know that I told him. I marched up to him and told him while he was waiting at Brandon’s evals the story. He said he never said that. She was already crying when he talked to her, frustrated that the refs allowed the basket to count when half of her team just stopped in their tracks because they all heard a whistle from the other game. But his story was that he saw that she was crying and said that it was dumb for her to be crying, as again, they were up by so many points.
She got over it, and at least I got it cleared up, with a few more hugs for her. She was fine watching Brandon’s evals until it was time to go to her free jazz class.
She was okay with it since she knew her friend would be there. Actually, two friends. But then another showed up, a fourth grader, and she was totally fine with it. Oh, and I bribed her. On our way to the class, I told her that if she tried hard, and did her best, then I’d get her something special. She asked me what. I asked her what she wanted. We were passing Hobee’s, and she said, “OH, coffee cake from Hobee’s.” “Sure”, I said, “I can make that happen if you do your best.” So, she did! She did great! She did what she was asked, followed the other girls; she wasn’t first, but she was second, right behind her friend, so I know she was motivated. There was one dad that squeezed in between the moms to find his daughter. He pointed to his daughter, and pointed to her to get out there. She shook her head adamantly. That was us 6 years ago, but glad we’re passed that. And that this was a free class, so he wasn’t losing the money that I did for ‘princess ballet’. The hour went by quickly, as we moms were just chatting outside the class. The girls all came out with smiles on their faces. And went to get snacks, also promised on the advertisement for the class.

They allowed us to take pictures of them, and then we went our separate ways. I headed to Dave, who was now at softball evals, looking at the old league to see if we made the right choice pulling Peyton out. Dave whole-heartedly felt right about the choice, even talking to the league president. We stayed shortly, then headed to get lunch, meeting one of our softball family friends. Their daughter played with Peyton in the fall on the travel team, and will return to the league due to time commitments. The kids all sat together, while the parents all ate together and reviewed the evals. When we were all done, we wrapped up, and headed home.
Peyton finished up her mandala, that she’d been working on in class. She finished piano, and then Brandon left for basketball practice. I had to make good on the hobee’s promise, but after I went to the gym. Peyton was excited to join me. We set up on two treadmills, side by side, and I told her to clip in and do 2 miles. She clipped in, had my ear buds, and listened to the food network. But, she kept fiddling with the ear buds and turned off the treadmill, resetting it, twice. She finally did get her two miles in, which she had to piece together using math. Then, I asked her if she wanted to try the elliptical or the bike. She chose elliptical. I asked her if she wanted to do 10 minutes, and she said, “No, like 20!” So, we went! I had the ear buds this time, as I didn’t want to distract her from the task at hand. She was a little shaky on the pedals, so I told her to hold on to the stationary handles. She chose the moving handles. I was listening to a PBS special on classical music. Gershwin came on, and I wanted her to listen, so I was going to hand her my buds. She got overconfident, took her hand off the handle, and started to lean. She leaned too much, and she went down, slowly, like in slow motion. I quickly grabbed the moving handle where her right hand would have been, luckily, I positioned us right, as I had it in my left hand. I stabilized her so she wasn’t rocking and getting caught between the stairs. She was able to get up, and that was how we completed the 20 minutes. I asked her if she was alright, and if she wanted to go home. She said she was fine, and she wanted to ride the bike. I thought with the bike, she’d only want to ride 10 minutes, but she found suduko! So she said she wanted to ride 20 minutes. She’s like my mini personal trainer, as I would have left after my 2.5 miles!
We stopped by hobee’s, got her two slices of cake (one for her, and one for three of us to share). She got to eat half of it after her shower and will save the other half for tomorrow. She has a softball scrimmage, at 10 am, arrival by 9 am. Then has basketball practice at 12 pm until 130 pm. Brandon has evals at 2 pm for a possible Cooperstown team, and then a game at 330 pm, and at 5 pm, I get to go to dinner with the girls. The day is all laid out already, and I’m tired just thinking of it!
