Free Saturday

Brandon and Dave went to baseball early this morning, while Peyton and I laid around. Literally. Well, I did, and she watched some TV. Practice was supposed to last until 10 am, but the boys didn’t come back until around 1030 am. Peyton was having trouble when they did come back, so we decided to split up again. Dave took Brandon to his eye appointment, while I made Peyton do some work. When she was done, we went to the store. I was going to take them both to the library, but with her attitude, that wasn’t going to happen. She was behaving while we were in the store. In fact, we were rounding the corner in the store, and I heard “be careful” in Chinese as another cart was coming around the corner, when Peyton looked up and said, “Hi, Vivian!” I looked up, and it was Vivian and her mom! We chatted with them for a little bit, long enough to ask Vivian where she was going to school. Peyton answered where she was going to school, too. Vivian is going to the school we would have attended had we not moved from the condo. We took off, and we headed back home. I fed Peyton lunch, and then I sent her to take a nap. I asked her to close her door in case Brandon came home and was too noisy. She listened just as I asked. She was being a model citizen now! Dave and Brandon came home about an hour and a half later. She was still sleeping! I wonder if she had more sleep if she wouldn’t do better in school. She gets almost 12 hours a night now…so not sure how much we can squeeze in, but she really needs her naps! I woke her up after they got home, since I’d wanted her to sleep tonight, too. She was still sleeping even after I’d kissed her on the cheek twice. Finally, she woke up, but she was still groggy. I took her downstairs, and she laid around for awhile before fully waking up. I wanted to check out the art and wine festival, but it was Brandon’s turn to melt down. So, we left the boys, and we headed to the festival. It was super crowded, but we stayed together walking up and down all the booths on the main street. I was looking for something for my grandma, but it was just so crowded! Peyton whined about being hungry, but after a certain point, we had walked so far in, she needed to hang on and walk back to the car. We lasted about 90 minutes before going back home. I’d bought some food at the festival to eat when we got home. She ate the half of the chicken from the kabob, beets, some spicy carrots, and some green beans. I knew she was hungry, as the first bowl of food disappeared. Luckily, I’d only given her two carrots, because they were pretty spicy. Both kids were in bed by 730 pm, as Dave wanted peace and quiet for the football game tonight. Baseball game is at 3 pm so we’ll try to keep them a little busy in the morning. Peyton lost her electronics this morning, so she’ll have to do something unplugged for the game in the afternoon.

While we were walking out of the picnic, Peyton saw her friend, Violet, hanging out with her sister and dad.  I went up to introduce myself, as Peyton and Violet are in class and CDC together.  Oh, and Peyton pushed Violet last week 🙁  But they quickly recovered and they have been having fun ever since.  Well, Violet’s dad was very gracious, telling us, “OH yes, Peyton.  Violet has told us a lot about Peyton.  They are good friends.”  He’s French.  Maybe his idea of “good friends” is different.  But like I said, gracious.  We walked away, doing our best to hold our heads high.  Her dad’s name is the same as one of Peyton’s favorite princess’s side kick.  That’s how we’re able remember his name 🙂  Peyton did wave bye to her, and she was nice to her, so for that I’m grateful.  I hope that Peyton turns herself around and doesn’t get a bad rep.  Dave was joking that if you haven’t been pushed around by a Tsao kid at school, then you’re not in know.  I did get a shot out from another kid I had in class last year, and who Brandon had not been nice to at the beginning of the year.  I’m glad these kids  that come into contact with ours are forgiving and that Brandon is having a great year thus far!  I don’t know how we raise such bruisers, especially since I’m in the classroom trying to make it a better place.  Work with me, kids, seriously!

5 times the charm

We live 1.5 miles from school. Doesn’t seem bad, right? Unless, it’s like today, when I went to school FIVE times! We had a meeting with Peyton’s teacher this morning at 740 am. She wanted to chat about Peyton and get a game plan for the year. I left to go to work, then came back to get Peyton by 11:35 am. We went home where she ate her lunch, then we returned for Brandon at 1245 pm. I wanted to check in since he was going to chess club today. I listened to the brief announcements, then headed back home. I asked Peyton to go to sleep. Of course, she responded, “I’m not tired,” to which I replied, “Sure, just lie down.” I checked email and was quiet for about 5 minutes before going up to check on her. Of course, she was passed out, with a limb going in each direction. I waited until the last moment to wake her, and when I did, she was so disoriented. She molded her body to me, and kept mumbling, “But where’s mommy? Mommy?” Finally, she came to just as I was out the door, and throwing her into the car with her shoes. We headed to school and picked up Brandon. We went home, and then I gave the kids a snack. Brandon ate the rest of his lunch, while Peyton had some fruit. Peyton asked if she could play piano, which was great, because I’d forgotten. That was the perfect thing to do before heading over to the Peleg’s for a playdate. Brandon was next up, and then it was time to head over. We arrived and Daniel and his little brother were peeking out of their house, waiting for us to come. Just as we did, Niv had come home on his scooter from middle school. He’s three years older than Brandon, but he enjoys his company! They bonded over baseball. Peyton and Daniel played nicely, while Niv and Brandon were doing their own thing. Liat and I chatted and watched both sets of kids as they played. Four kids, and things were much more orderly than the two that I have! Finally, the volcano came out. The kids were mixing vinegar and baking soda in the volcano mold, and soon it was a scientific mess. Yaron came out to supervise, even though he was supposed to be working from home. They all had a great time, and we had to wrap up to go get food for the picnic at school. I convinced the kids we could come back only if they left with me when I asked. As we thanked our hosts and said goodbye, Dave called me to ask where we were. He was going to get dinner and dessert to share, while I took the kids home to wash up a little bit. Peyton had gotten sprayed by the hose, so she went to change her tights, while Brandon had baking soda on his shirt, so he went to change. We met Dave at school (5th time back), and headed into school together. We sat with one of the baseball families who had seen Peyton sitting at practice with a helmet on her head. They did mention she was doing a good job sitting there playing by herself, waiting for the team to finish up practice. The kids just wanted to go play, so we rushed through dinner to go watch them. We found Liat and the kids at the structure. Dave hadn’t seen them, so we caught him up on the merrymaking that happened at their house. Dave wanted to leave by 7 pm, so we could get the kids into bed. Practice is at 8-10 am tomorrow, even though one of the parents complained it was too early. Dave had called it “optional”, and I was going to write back that the coach’s family wanted some time together, hence why practice was so early. But Dave nicely put that practice was optional and to make whatever time work for them between the hours of 8 and 10 am. Good for him. We need some time away from baseball, too! Sunday’s game is from 3-5 pm, and we have dinner after that, so we can’t devote our entire weekend to baseball. At least Peyton and I can sleep in a bit, or maybe I’ll make her walk around the neighborhood with me. I haven’t gotten any mileage in this week, so I need to build it back up!

Hide and Seek

When we were young, we’d call out for my mom around the house, and we wouldn’t hear, “Over here!” We’d search the house and finally find her, or not…and I always wondered why she would hide from us! Until now. Everyone was downstairs while I went up to put away clothes. I heard Peyton ask, “Where’s Mommy?” Dave told her upstairs. I quickly turned off the light in the closet, and just stayed behind the slightly open door in the dark. I heard her footsteps all over the upstairs, her calling out to me. She went down and said, “I don’t see her!” She enlisted Brandon’s help, and I heard both of them walking around. I was trying to stifle a giggle, something I could never contain whenever I did play hide and seek. In fact, both of them came into the bathroom, and I was watching them through the crack in the door. The generic viagra usa lapses can even last up to many years. They gave up and I went about my business of hanging up clothes, while they went downstairs. Eventually, when I was done 5 minutes later, I came downstairs. “There you are!” I just wanted to finish doing my one thing without an interruption. And now I understand why she would hide. Or at least I think that’s why…

Kink in the Plan

I worked a “normal” day today, leaving by 2pm, rushing out even while talking to my boss right at the end of the day. I ran to get Peyton from CDC, and then headed to get Brandon. We made it just in time, and Peyton was telling me about her day. Brandon was ready to go, and the kids were discussing who was going to go first at piano. Peyton went first last week, because the teacher knew she was getting tired when she went second. Brandon was going back and forth whether he wanted to go first or second. Finally he conceded that Peyton would go first. BUT, he said he had to go potty. I knew what that meant. He needed to go #2. So…..we had 10 minutes, which wasn’t enough time to go home. I didn’t want him to bomb the teacher’s toilet, so I was proposing to Peyton to drop her off while we went home. She started to whine and then cry. Brandon couldn’t hold it, so I just dumped her off to play, while the piano teacher just whisked her in to try to set her at ease. I quickly left with Brandon and told him the deal. Poop, wash hands, and then we’re back out. It took him about 10 minutes, and we were right back to the house. We walked in, and lo and behold, Peyton was at the piano, and she was playing. She smiled at us, then Brandon got to work on his homework. He was upset by having to do his homework at the piano teacher’s house. He even said, “It’s called HOME work. You know, you do it at ‘home’! Not HOUSEwork.” Whatever he called it, he did it while he waited. There was something I’d taught her incorrectly, and the teacher asked her why she played it that way. Peyton had a tear welling, and the teacher called her on it. “Is that a tear? Why are you crying?” Then the water works started. I told the teacher that it was my mistake, and that Peyton doesn’t like to be wrong. She gathered herself, and pulled back together, but it took a little while. The teacher asked her what grade she was in. Peyton answered, “Kindergarten.” She thought she was in first grade, and said, “Well, that explains a lot!” She tried to pump her up again, and encourage her.
They switched at the half-way mark, and then she came back and played on the ipad that I’d grabbed while making the pit stop. Brandon started to play his songs. Ms M told him, “Brandon, there is a big difference between you and your sister playing.” He plays quickly, and “rough”. They were playing “Hush Little Baby”, and Ms. M told him, “We’re trying to put the baby to sleep. NOT wake the baby up.” Peyton got a kick out of it. Actually, Brandon thought it was funny, too. They did a reasonable job for not having practiced over last weekend. Here’s Peyton’s duet with Ms. M

Too Busy To Blog?!

Almost. Yesterday, I met up with the team to practice for today’s meeting. I got the kids from CDC around 345 pm, and we did homework, piano, and even showers early. Dave came home after a long commute, and he started eating, not knowing we’d waited for him! So, he backed up and made the kids dinner, too. We got them down early, by 730 pm, then I took off. It was a 2 hour meeting, and I still had follow up work to do when I got home. I got up early this morning, helped with the kids, then took off to work. Given we’d had a long weekend, I paid for it a bit today. I came back from work to meet Dave at the park. He had both kids doing batting practice. He can throw the ball at Peyton the same speed that he does with Brandon (weighted wiffle balls), and she can connect with them! She hit one almost as far as Brandon. Another mom came up to us to drop her son off, and her daughter just turned 5 today. She couldn’t believe Peyton was the same age! Peyton and I took off to home, and she ate dinner and showered. We ran out of time for piano, even though she tried to play a few minutes. I dropped her off at the park, and I was concerned she was sitting in foul ball territory while playing on her tablet. I didn’t worry so much about the tablet as her head, so I went back to the car and got her helmet for her to wear. She looked a bit special, but at least I knew she wasn’t going to get seriously hurt. I warned her about not walking off with anyone, and she agreed. Good thing she didn’t have to go potty at all. I signaled to Dave that I was leaving.  Peyton watched me pull away, waving at me twice.  She looked so little sitting there, though her helmet made her stand out from across the parking lot. Then I headed out to meet with the large group. We had about 25 volunteers that we were training tonight. I had the first part of the training, leading an ice breaker as well as the logistics and administrative stuff about our program. I was sweating bullets, both out of nerves as well as the amount of people in the room making it warm. What was worse was that the principal was supposed to come! No pressure!! So after 2.5 hours on campus, I headed home. I was asked to send some follow up material out, so I waited for some components to be sent to me before I could send that out. Now, I’m about to put together the baby shower gift for tomorrow, before going to sleep. It’s a race to the weekend…at least the training was over, and by accounts of those in attendance, it went well! Oh, and the principal didn’t show up, and that was a bit sigh of relief!

Wedding weekend recap

On Friday, we picked the kids up from school by 10. I was home changing and putting bags in my car, while Dave was doing pick up in the middle of recess. He said it was a good thing he found Brandon in the sea of people. Brandon said he didn’t recognize Dave because he was already in wedding attire.  We headed out, and I was dropped off first since my flight was earlier. No problems at all for me. However, Dave tested me while I got through security that his flight was delayed by 2 hours. There went my vision of hanging out in the bridal suite watching all the girls get ready!  I then recess Suong to come get me. She was running some errands and would pick me up on her way to the hotel. I waited around people-watching and charging my phone outside. More than an hour or so later, I was still there and Dave had come in by this time. He still had to get his car, so I ended up waiting for Suong anyway. The problem was Dave had ironed my wedding clothes and put them in his bag. I opened up my bag at the airport to see what I was left, and fortunately, I had my shoes and two other dresses I’d packed for other events this weekend. Suong and I arrived at the hotel by 5pm. Wedding was at 530 pm. We got ready, and I ironed my backup dress. Dave arrived at 515 pm. No traffic for either of us from the airport to the hotel. Suong had already gotten stuck in it just to get me from the Westside.  So we all rushed down to the ceremony with 15 minutes to spare as the bride made a slightly late entrance. Both kids were quiet during the 30 minute ceremony, device-free. We chatted with our friends during cocktail hour, with the kids trying Shirley Temples for the first time. They were warned they only got one. Surprisingly, Brandon sipped his. Peyton finished hers first and kept eyeing Brandon’s. Luckily she didn’t act on it. The kids enjoyed the hors d’ourves and that took the edge off from being hungry. The kids were sitting around talking to the adults (Peyton watched, while Brandon talked), until Katie came over. She tapped Brandon’s shoulder and asked him to come over to play. He thought about it for a second, then joined her. Funny that Katie didn’t ask Peyton, only Brandon, but she ran over to join them. Katie (7), Kyle (4), Ellie (3), and the two kids all played nicely together. We all headed into dinner, and the kids had a salad in from of them, but the waiters were going to remove the plates to make room for their chicken strips and fries. We asked them to keep them there, and they ate it before the chicken and fries. Even Peyton ate the salad, which was the fancier lettuce she doesn’t usually have. Brandon didn’t eat the goat cheese, which was surprising. The adults eyed the kids’ fries, and we shared them since there were a ton. After the kids were done, we ipadded them while we enjoyed dinner. They enjoyed themselves, and once the music came on, so did their head phones. It helped protect their ears. We enjoyed the rest of the reception, and eventually, made it to the last songs. Peyton gave up on the devices to join us on the dance floor. She loves watching the dancing, but she doesn’t want to have any part.  We took them back upstairs for bed, while I changed to head out for the after-party. Some of the group was surprised to see me out. I didn’t want the party to end 🙂  so we walked a half-block to the bar. Two guys had to go back and change because they were in flip flops and one guy in shorts but, as the bouncer said “Chicks can wear whatever they want.” The guys went to jtown for noodles, while we hung out there for a bit before returning to Debbie’s room. The hotel upgraded her to a suite. Two girls went to go get tacos from the taco truck outside. We hung out until 3am before Suong and I headed back to our room. We had a plan for the boys to sleep together, while Suong and I sandwiched Peyton.  I warned her she may get kicked. As it was, when we found her, Peyton was perpendicular in bed. I moved her and tried to hold her leg and keep her from kicking. It only worked as long as I was awake. When we woke the next morning, Suong informed me she was kicked.  Oops. We headed down to find Dave and Brandon for breakfast. They had awoken at 630 and had headed out for coffee, before shooting around on the famed court. We played for a little bit with Leon, then we headed down. Most of the bridal party was there by that time. We ate then headed up to the room to watch the football game.  I tried to sleep more, not being used to staying out late anymore. We then checked out at around 1 and met up again for lunch. I had a much-needed salad, which hit the spot. The kids weren’t hungry and were more interested in hanging out with Katie and Kyle. Kyle was so cute and would rest his head on Brandon’s shoulder. When Peyton does this, he swipes her off. Glad he didn’t mind it from Kyle. After lunch we drove back to Dave’s parents’ house. Peyton told us she wasn’t tired, but of course, she was out. It was a short drive without traffic, so she didn’t get much sleep. We hung out with the grandparents and laid down the rules for all of them. Dave’s mom was worried the kids wouldn’t sleep. We just told her to keep them separated. We got them fed and bat then left to Mike’s. We walked with him to our pre-dinner drinks spot. Dinner was at 10 pm because we couldn’t get earlier reservations for the party of 8. We chatted with Suong again, then we headed to dinner. Charlie squeezed Mike to join us. We left the ordering up to Kathleen and Spencer since theyd been wanting to try and being from Singapore, they’d have less chance of it in the near future. We tried rabbit, lamb, pig’s ear and head, and probably a dozen other things. I was most impressed that I did commit to trying everything, except the chicken wing as there were only 8. They were out of veal brain and tongue, and I was secretly happy about that. We enjoyed all 4 desserts on the menu. We headed out for our nice walk back. We chose to do this so Dave could sober up a bit and I could get some exercise.  When got back, we chatted for a little while then we headed to bed. I got to sleep in until 830 the next morning. We didn’t leave Mike’s until after ten though the party started at that time. It was a casual get together for the bridal party, family and out of town guests.  We got into the parking lot of Deb and Simon’s place just as Jos and Charlie had arrived.  We’d all just met up the night before, but they had gone out after we disbanded!  Crazy kids!  The party was nicely decorated with the flowers from the wedding.  Deb’s cousin had put together their wedding video that he’d shot with just his phone and a super powerful flash.  It was nicely done!  We ate Porto’s pastries and breakfast sandwiches, then celebrated Deb’s mom’s birthday, with all four of her daughters present!  We stayed for a couple of hours, being appreciative of not chasing kids around the party as we saw other parents.  By after awhile, it was time for us to go collect our own kids.  We thanked our hosts, said a real bye to everyone, as this was the last wedding related event.  We wouldn’t be seeing anyone else, as our flight left early Monday morning.  Traffic was unusually light, and we returned from Marina Del Rey to RH in just 30 minutes!  Unheard of.  When we pulled up to the driveway, Peyton must have heard us. She ran to the door, and struggled to open it.  We just saw eye balls through the glass in the door.  She did finally get it open, and then she started crying.  Dave’s mom thought she was crying just because she saw mommy, or trying to get sympathy.  But when I finally got to her, there was blood all over the floor.  She’d caught her toe under the door frame, and it cut her foot.  I almost passed out, but I had to address the situation.  I scooped her up, and brought her over to the sink to wash her off.  They got ice, and a bandage, and it slowly started to bleed.  Poor thing, was in one piece until just the last minute.  No one else heard us, or knew that she was trying to open the door to help her.  We packed up our stuff there, and then Dave’s parents wanted to go to eat dinner.  We were all stuffed, but the kids were hungry.  Peyton was still in jammies, so we changed her, and then headed out.  We went to a Taiwanese place, and Peyton was near asleep, leaning on my lap until food arrived.  When we were done with dinner, we said goodbye, while we headed to Mike’s for the night.  It was still early, and I wanted to get ice cream from a place we’d seen on our last trip that had a line out the door.  We found out it was only 2 miles away from Mike, so we decided to get the kids to walk there.  It was such a nice night, we didn’t even need sweaters!  The kids were to not complain about the walk, though Peyton broke the rule to mention her foot hurt from the door.  We made it there, and I tried the thai ice tea macaron sandwich, while Dave had a coffee almond scoop. Brandon had mint, while Peyton had strawberry.  Mike had a strawberry bar, while Yeonhee ate a raspberry macaron sandwich, dipped in chocolate.  We ate it all quickly, and then headed back on foot.  We took a different route just to have something else to look at.  Peyton was rushing, and I thought she should pace herself.  Walking back seemed faster, and we were all hot and sweaty by the time we were done.  The kids got in the bath, and we got them to bed by 9 pm.  We talked for a bit, then went to bed by 11 pm.  My flight was a 7 am, so we woke up by 5 am to leave by 530 am.  When I woke Peyton up, she said, “But it’s still night time!”  She moved more easily than Brandon did, but neither gave us problems.  Dave dropped me off first, and then they took the car back, had breakfast and didn’t get on their flight until after I’d arrived at home.  My dad picked me up, and I got the car and headed to the coffee shop.  My dad headed in to work.  Everything went as planned, and we headed back home.  It was nice to get home, and Peyton and I took a 2 hour nap, while Dave went to practice with Brandon.  We walked over there after we woke up.  It was such a good nap!  After the scrimmage, we headed to dinner for happy hour to celebrate our anniversary, and our usual grocery shopping to get us on our way for the start of our week.

Here are the pics I took this weekend.  We have more on the real camera…
