I woke up this morning, and we went about “business as usual.” That meant playing the piano with both kids, then Dave took Peyton out to get breakfast for Brandon and me. Brandon stayed behind and did some work, then we all ate quickly. We left for Peyton’s game at 930 am to arrive at the field by 10 am, with some time to get there to warm Peyton up on our own. But, as we were driving, I checked our website, and it was game start at 12 pm, and arrival by 11 am. So we were an hour early. (And it wasn’t even daylight savings!!) So, we got gas, got some more food for later, and hung out inside before heading over. We beat our coach and other girls there by a long shot. We weren’t sure which field we were on, so we just waited for the home team to arrive. We waited in the comfort of shade, while Peyton practiced pitching to Dave. Once our coach got there, and then the other team, we headed to the field. It was already near 90 by that time, and only getting hotter. Brandon and I sought shelter under the umbrellas we’d brought but the girls were out there. Coach wanted to cancel or reschedule, but he didn’t get any takers from our team. No one responded that we wanted it canceled. We all stuck it out, and we brought a 2.5 gallon jug of iced water. The girls lined up to bat in order of arrival. That meant that Peyton was up first!

The other coach came in quite a bit, but Peyton took it in stride, like a champ. She didn’t let it bother her, and she did a great job her first time out there. We wrapped up the game after time was called, 1.5 hours after the game started, and we headed back home. We all showered up, and then we headed out for dinner. It was a no-fuss dinner, trying out a new place for the first time. We had Mongolian BBQ for the first time that the kids can remember. They’d been before, but we haven’t eaten it lately, so I think they’d forgotten. Maybe Peyton’s never been. She enjoyed her meal, and Brandon ate two big helpings! dave thinks he ate more than he did. He certainly earned it with today’s activity. We headed to groceries since we haven’t gotten them for the week. Today, I woke up and got both kids to the piano. It took almost an hour for them to finish up. I then got ready myself, fed the kids breakfast, and then asked who wanted to go with me to the Dragon Boat Race festival in the city on TI. I had Peyton remember what the intersection was where we parked (more for ME to remember, but it helps to say it aloud). We walked back to the festival and checked out the different booths. It was a primarily Chinese event, as there were buses dropping people off from Chinatown. Dave would have been happy to not have gone. We did see a yoyo-ist, that was pretty cool, yoyoing two separate yo yos at the same time and doing tricks. Brandon would have loved it. There were carnival rides but they required tickets, and they were more rickety and scary. They had kids’ carnival games, and Peyton got a tic tac toe for a prize, then tried basketball and throwing balls at targets. We checked out the crafts area, and she made a bracelet with her name on it. There were food trucks, but Peyton said she wasn’t hungry. So, we continued to walk around, and checked out the boat races. We waited in some lines for swag, but unfortunately, at the grocery booth, instead of getting a peach, plum, apple or other fruit, Peyton stopped on banana. She said, “Well, I can give it to Brandon (she no longer likes bananas).” Then, I spun. And I got the lemon. It wasn’t our day. Today, we had another marathon Thursday. I picked up the kids for Peyton’s piano. She did a great job today, despite crying as usual last Friday. Tonight’s first of two BTSN’s threw our schedule off. We normally have piano for Brandon at 525 pm, but BTSN started at 545 pm, so I asked the piano teacher to switch. One girl is a fifth grader, and she said she’d been working on things since over the summer. When the teacher asked who of them had musical experience, and all four of them raised their hands. The band teacher was blown away (pun intended) by the speed with which the kids picked up the instrument. She said she’s used to just working on the embouchure for the first class with most other kids and schools, but she moved on to actual songs and reading music. Peyton told me she’s been talking to the fourth grade girls. Their play structure is closer to her line up area, and though she’s not allowed there, she hangs out on the edge. She chatted with B and G, both girls that Brandon has been interested in the past. Kelsey was the only player that had pitched before, so she was up for 2 innings. Coach grabbed on other player to teach her on the fly. I thought of “Blue Devils”, as I saw one parent in a DUKE shirt. Then, since it was our girls, I changed it to “Blue Angels”, and Dave agreed. Another dad seconded that, so that’s the team name for us! While we were in the car, Peyton said she wanted to pitch. Dave hadn’t been serious about teaching her as 1) he didn’t really know how, and 2) we thought there would be lots of other contenders, since it was her first year in the higher division. So, we delivered Brandon to his team, and Dave started to teach Peyton pitching mechanics. We were asked as parents to inform the coach who wanted to pitch, and now, Peyton showed her interest. I’d convinced her by telling her that no other girls knew how either, and if she practiced, she’d get better. She spent about half of Brandon’s game with her glove on with a ball in it. Once she gets her mind on something, she’s willing to practice to get better at it! She even watched YOUTUBE videos to find out more. I told Dave he’d better set her up with Jenny Finch or Lisa Fernandez videos, so she got legit pitchers. When Dave queued one up for her (Jenny Finch), she said, “Hey, that’s the girl that I saw before.” Brandon didn’t get up to bat much either as he was almost in the same position as Peyton for batting. This wasn’t an alphabetical thing more like a favoritism thing since Brandon’s playing on a team that’s already been established (that’s my theory as he and Hana were both down in the line up). Good thing is that Brandon walked once, and put the ball in play for a grounder to first the second time. When we were done with baseball, we came home to change to go back to the art and wine festival. My mom went home as she wanted to watch the game, and then we headed out. Dave wanted to get his wine on, so the kids and I wandered around. We found a humvee that was there yesterday, but Peyton didn’t want to go in it. Of course, with Brandon around, she clamored up into it. When Brandon saw it, he said, “Wait, there’s no 50 cal up on top?” I didn’t know what he was mumbling about, but I knew there was an open turret up there. Soon, the army guy talking told another dad, “Usually, there is a 240 or a 50 cal up there.” Apparently, he’s been studying up on military vehicles! Brandon found a wheel to spin and the question came up how he thought we could spare air. He thought for awhile. We didn’t know what he’d come up with but he said, “Buy an electric car!” The guy gave him a freebie for getting the right answer. The guy asked Peyton, “When we have a spare the air day, what is the weather like?” I told her one word is all that’s needed. I asked her what her classroom was like this past week. Bs he answered, “Hot!” She got a prize, too.
We also found a punching bag, and Brandon was willing to give it a try. The goal was 50 punches in 30 seconds for a prize. He got up to 37, then we recruited Dave to try. We pulled him out of the wine area, and he gave it a go and got up to 52 punches. But, he felt sick afterward. We ruined him 🙁 He had to sit for awhile, as he was feeling really sick after the wine. The guy told him to breathe, but it wasn’t enough. We made our way to the ramen place, and then he was feeling better, as he was starting to talk about baseball again. He was telling me about one girl who gave him some sass and disregarded his instruction on the field today. Luckily, he wasn’t talking about Peyton this time. When we got home, Brandon was to take a bath first, as Dave promised Peyton more pitching time. He spent a little more time and is also showing her more videos. I took the time to practice piano with each of them before sending them to bed just before 8 pm.
