Super Saturday!

Peyton and Dave left early to batting practice since it’d been 2 weeks since she had had practice or a game as it’d rained BOTH Thursdays, and we were out of town last week. My parents came over to watch the games today and stay for Peyton’s closing ceremonies, so she wanted to do her best with them watching. We headed out before her game time, and I went around to have the players sign the cards for the coaches, which were going to be presented at the end of the season party after the game.
There was a different coach pitching today.
Here’s her first at-bat, she was lead-off batter to start the game. She’d told me at the Father Daughter dance that her coach had told her to hit the ball far and run as fast as she could, because they were allowing full base hits, not just singles as they had all season long.
Coach thought he had the line up sent, but somehow it hadn’t, so he told the team that Peyton was leading off, and that Emma, another big hitter was home-run hitter.

Running home or Sydney’s RBI:

Second inning: home run hitter – she overran her leading runner! (she would’ve been out if they were keeping track, but proud of her for running fast!) He let the team choose their batting order, but this time Emma was lead-off, and Peyton was home run hitter.

Final inning: she was in the middle of the order, as they mixed it up again – again, ran too fast and ran into her lead-runner!

On defense, Peyton was pitcher the first inning, and she had two put-outs. She was proud of her D, telling me, “And I got two outs!” That is her favorite position.

For the last time…

I asked Peyton where she wanted to sit, and her response blew me away, “I want to sit with my teammates, and you sit over there with the other parents(pointing to the other side of the table).” So great that she bonded with these girls! So, as each family came in, we told the girls of the plan. Natalie, Sydney’s mom, brought a pad of paper and gel pens bundled for each girl as a parting gift. It was great as they were all sharing, and writing each other notes. They were all getting along, each and every one from the oldest to the youngest. The parents were making the observation that each girl is a bit of an introvert, and there were no “personalities” on the team. They were all quiet in a group, but they were now comfortable with one another, so it was really nice to see. We all ordered and got our food. The kids ate independently, while the parents chatted. Fortunately, my mom and dad took Brandon to their own lunch, since he would have been out of place there (or with a phone or something). At one point, Sydney had to go potty. She came up to me (at her mom’s request, since she had her little brother in tow), “Peyton’s mom, can Peyton take me to the potty?” I told her to go ask Peyton, but yes, it was okay. Sydney asked, “Peyton, will you take me to the potty?” Peyton said, “Yes! Of course!” And they went together. More of them went together, but we finally corralled them all. Coach presented each girl with a Softball chapter book with an inscription, telling them this was the best coaching season he’s had with all the parents pulling together to participate. We said goodbye, knowing we’d see each other at closing ceremonies later that evening.

We all went home, and it was only 1115 am, but I told Peyton to go take a nap. She didn’t sleep at first, but within 10 minutes, she did. I wasn’t going to progress to the next step of our day until she did! When she woke up, I told her we needed to go to Miranda’s party. Dave drove over in his car, too, while Brandon stayed home with my parents. Miranda is one of the girls in Peyton’s troop, and her mom is the leader who encourages Peyton to talk more. We came into the house, and the water slide was set up in the backyard. It was humungous! She wasn’t changed for it, since I thought it may be too cold, but the sun had come out. I brought our swim bag, and Peyton agreed to go in without any convincing.

She changed and took off to hang out with her friends and shoot water cannons. Dave and I made our way around to the nacho bar and got some fruit. Dave passed on the beer offer, and I introduced him to some of the moms from scouts. Then, he left to go to Brandon’s baseball game. He was filling in for a missing player on another team, so it wasn’t necessary for Dave to be there right on time. He still used it as his get out of the party excuse. Peyton played for awhile, then ate, then played some more. She was pretty cold, shivering, and then getting her primary towel all soaked. Luckily, I had a second towel for her. There was also a bubble machine, so she had fun with that. Once she dried off, it was cake time! Miranda’s mom and aunts helped make the Ariel cake. It was amazing! The inside was a chocolate layer and a white layer. The frosting was very thin, which was great; Peyton even commented on it! We watched gift opening, then it was time for us to go. I asked her to go say bye to Miranda, but she’d just taken off to the slide! Peyton chased after her in her flip flops, and said, “Happy Birthday, Miranda, I’m leaving!” She had to climb her way back down, and then she (and I) said thank you to both of Miranda’s parents. We went to Brandon’s game and arrived for the last inning and a half. Dave had been texting me updates throughout the game. The team was down by a few runs, but they were fighting their way back. Since they were the visiting team, I came in as one of the twins (on the team, the Twins) was pitching. He held the runners, and it was 7-3 them. The Twins managed 4 runs, then Brandon was up in the next inning. There was a runner at third. Brandon had a sacrifice RBI with two outs to put the team up 8-7; the inning was over with the 5 run max rule. With the final half-inning to play, the Twins pitcher struck two kids out, then the team was able to get the third out for the win! We went to dinner with the six of us; the kids fought to see who would be next to grandma, and Brandon won. My mom told Peyton she’d get to sleep with them tonight, as we were all going up there to sleepover for our run on Sunday. After dinner, we headed home for a bath for Peyton. I practiced piano with both kids, then we headed back to the softball field. It was FREEZING!! I rushed only to wait there for 15 minutes extra as the event that was supposed to start at 7 did not. The girls had been there since 645 pm as requested. My parents went to the stands with Brandon, while Dave and I tried to secure a good vantage point. Once we saw how the process would work, I separated from Dave to sit with our team. He stayed where he was.
Finally, the ceremony started, and the teams were invited to come up to home plate to accept their trophies. All the big girls made a tunnel for the younger girls to go through. I realized one of Mckayla’s friends were at the end of the tunnel!

Once all the teams were introduced, they announced the winners of the competitions – throwing distance, fastest running around the bases, batting distance, then finally throwing accuracy. I started recording the announcer, not knowing if Peyton had one any. The first one announced was throwing distance. She did not win this one, though Dave thinks she could have! She was still groggy, and didn’t want to go up first, surprisingly! She just chucked it at the skills competition, so Dave was a bit disappointed. Then, it was batting distance.
Here’s the announcement:

I missed the intro on this one!

Later, I asked her if she was listening for her name. She said, “No, my friends told me to go up!” Then, I asked her if she knew what the announcer said the second time she went up there, and she didn’t. She brought me all her awards and the only thing she told me was, “Yay! I can go sleep with Grandma now!” She didn’t care about her plaques, or she was downplaying it! It was so neat to see her friends congratulating her, and Sydney gave her a big hug! Sydney won “Most Improved Player” and got another trophy, too! We all then separated, with my parents taking Brandon home, and Dave and I taking Peyton to pack our stuff for the next day. After we dropped Peyton off, we foraged for some breakfast that would be suitable for our run. We ended the evening with the kids already sleeping, and going to sleep ourselves around 11 pm. We had a 515 am alarm set, so it was going to be a short sleep for us. I did get to sleep right away and didn’t have the race nervousness I usually get. I was just too tired for that! More to come…
