Busy and Fun day

I had Peyton in my bed last night because of the smoke detector in her room going off every few minutes. Dave came home and didn’t know she was in there. He turned on the light, and she stirred before he quickly turned it off. He ended up dismantling the unit, and then slept downstairs. I told him to go sleep with Brandon, as I knew he’d go looking for him. I didn’t want him in our room, as Brandon would come and wake everyone up in the morning. I locked the door, and then went to sleep. Sure enough, in the morning, I heard a tug at the door. Twice. He was just checking. He headed downstairs but not before Peyton was slowly waking. I was able to get another 15 minutes, but she finally woke up to go say hi to daddy. That was 7 am. I got ready for the day, while the kids caught up with Dave and got their goodies from him. Peyton got a moose in a can, while Brandon got a Canadian baseball. Brandon and Dave headed out for their basketball game at 9 am, while Peyton and I headed to V’s party at PIU. The place has moved since we last went, but it’s still relatively close. I had it on GPS, but she knew where she was. She said, “This is where the batting cages are!” Sure enough, she was right! She’s been there a few more times than me, so she knew. We had a great time; she with her friends, and me with mine! I got to chat up the birthday girl’s mom, G’s mom, and even one of the girl scout moms. This party represented many different connections that Peyton has in school and in the community, and she had a blast! I warned her not to come tattle or have other friends tattle on her, like “Peyton’s mom, she did this…” I didn’t have ANY of that! I was able to talk to a few of the moms, and she’d come over every now and then and give me a hug. She did the rock climbing wall, and she made it down on her own! And it took seconds, not hours. G’s mom even noticed and told me how great she did. They all had a great time, then H’s mom transferred her stuff to my car for a ride home. They were going shopping for cabinets, and I was going to take the girls home. G and P did a great job eating and then saying thank you and goodbye to both of the parents and birthday girl. We had a nice chat in the car ride home. I reminded them to smile at their basketball game, since it was the last one for the season for them. Peyton said, “Well, it doesn’t matter anyway, we are going to see each other at school, and at CDC, and you know, play dates.” H said, “Yeah, we’ll probably be friends forever.” Ack, the cuteness was too much. So glad for P to have such good friends, and even better than I’m friends with their moms! When we got home, the girls washed up, and they went upstairs to play. Brandon had come back from his basketball game, and he was in the process of eating. When he was done, he went upstairs, while the girls came down. They went outside to shoot baskets. Soon, Bonnie and Lo arrived. We were all going to go to the basketball game. Brandon was decked out in UCLA gear, as was I. B and L were neutrally dressed. We had a nice ride up to meet Michelle and Marcus, the caravaned to the parking lot. While we were getting out of the car, I helped Brandon avoid banging the door, but he put his hand in the hinge. I gently shut the door, but not before he moved his hand out of the way. He kept it together mostly, but he was quite upset and cried a little. He was not happy with me for about 10 minutes or so. He got over it, and he was good after awhile.
We arrived and passed by a crowded tennis center. Joyce had sent me text that Mackie, her nephew, was playing there today. Darn! We would’ve totally been game to see that match! We walked by just as they were announcing the players’ names. We arrived inside the arena, and we found our seats. Marcus and Michelle headed down to watch the players warm up, while Brandon was still sulking about his hand. Lo shared his pretzel, and Brandon came back to life. Soon, the game started. Brandon was really into it! He and I were chatting about the plays, and the fouls, and he was excited about the dunks. When he got bored, which wasn’t often, usually during time outs, we’d do math. UCLA was down much of the game, so we were figuring out point differentials, and seeing how many baskets, both field goals and three pointers (yes, we were down by that much) were needed to make up the score. He was keeping track of stats, like how many 3’s one player scored. Or how many free throws one player missed. In the end, we didn’t win. While at the game, I got a text from H’s mom that Peyton scored within 5 seconds of possession to start the game. Funny thing is that the two girls saw two other girls at the bday party who are on another bball team. They were having fun talking smack to each other. H busted out with, “We totally beat you guys last time!” They were all so competitive, but so “girlie” at the same time.

We walked back through the tennis area, and stopped to watch some of the women’s team warm up for the next day’s match. We drove home, and said goodbye to L and B. I let Brandon inside to go potty and wash up, then headed to take him to baseball practice. I picked Peyton up, who had just finished batting practice for herself. She showered up, then we waited for Dave to come home. Well, he did, but he was missing someone! Brandon went home with a friend for dinner and some play. Peyton changed back into going out clothes, and we headed to Downtown MTN. We had an informal dinner and watched the Warriors game with our girl. Dave was telling me that I missed a good game today, as Peyton was on fire! She scored 4 baskets this game, and the coaches told her to pass more. Dave knew she wasn’t happy to hear that, but it was part of the game he’s trying to teach her. We headed back in time to pick Brandon up, then all headed home. It was a quiet night, but we are gearing up for another busy day tomorrow. Both kids have practice; Peyton will learn how to pitch, while Brandon will have team practice again. Opening days are next week on Friday and Sunday. Peyton’s first practice is on Monday!
