Minute to Win it

For Valentine’s Day, Peyton’s Girl Scout Troop was learning about “fair play” earning a badge by playing some games with the kids and parents.  I didn’t have to be invited twice.  There were five games – unwrapping a Hershey kiss with one hand, stacking conversation hearts, using chopsticks to transfer one conversation heart at a time, moving a marshmallow with only a straw and putting a cookie on your forehead and moving it into your mouth.  Peyton and I got there early, and she was given a cookie to practice.  She tried but it dropped on the ground ending in tears.  She lost it for the first five minutes before others arrived.  She bounced back and joined her Troop.  I didn’t have a school meeting so I got to enjoy the meeting with the girls.  The one dad kept time while the moms joined the girls. Each of us spread out to the five activities then rotated.  Three Chinese girls went to the conversation hearts.  They were ready. The Caucasian girl blamed her mom for not teaching her how to use chopsticks!  Peyton kept up with me for the chopsticks trick. She had almost filled her small Dixie cup. We had to do it one by one so it was tricky.  I ended up with 36 while Peyton got 26.  She did better than the other girls in our group. We moved to the unwrapping of the kisses. Peyton got three while I got five done.  We headed to suck marshmallows through a straw.  Peyton kept blowing the marshmallows out of the straw after sucking and it made me laugh. I lost five seconds to laughter.  I had laid out marshmallows to not have to dig in the bowl.  I’d filled a whole Dixie cup and then got two in another.  By the time we got to the heart stacking, three groups had gone already.  I saw the sheet of paper with the totals and had heard that other moms said 7 was critical mass.  The top number thus far was 9.  So I set off to stack my hearts. I tried front to back and alternating. But they fell. So I stacked front to back since the backs were flat.  This worked well. I stacked to 11 and waited out the time. Peyton’s fell at the last second, and she slammed the table! Luckily, my 11 stayed put.  The final challenge was the cookies. I was expecting zero. But I started and it wasn’t so bad but I had to manipulate my face around.  I ended up with 3 while Peyton got zero. She didn’t cry so that’s a win!  We had the girls do another activity while some other moms tallied up the scores. One mom looked at the scores and said it runs in families.  At the end of the meeting, they announced the winner. The winner was to receive a pink scarf and pink sunglasses. They announced me as the winner and Peyton’s face lit up like she had won!  The mom whose daughter plays on Peyton’s basketball team said, “Gee I wonder where Peyton gets her competitiveness from?”  I told her I learned all about being competitive from Peyton!! 😉

We ended up meeting Dave and Brandon for a Valentine’s Day dinner. We met up with a friend there who was on duty. He normally works for the fire dept but he has now changed to police. Peyton was concerned when he saw him talking to Dave. She said, “Oh no! What happened why is daddy talking to the police?”
