Basketball mini season

Last week, Peyton showed up for her new team’s basketball practice. It was Easter Sunday, and we happened to be free from softball. We arrived early, and then slowly, the team started to arrive. They distributed numbers, and she quickly grabbed #22, her favorite number, before someone else took it. She did have to squeeze into it for it to fit. She wouldn’t be able to wear a tshirt underneath, but a tank would work. H was the last to arrive, after the team was already doing warm ups. Peyton was slow to mix in with the girls, but as soon as the drills started, she was right in there. There were 7 girls, and at one point, they wanted to split the team into two halves and run a relay drill. At some point, I heard Peyton say, “My brother can come!” Soon, the two sister coaches called Brandon over to the group. He was made to run drills, and even worse, face off against his sister in the anchor leg. He looked so relaxed up there, while Peyton was giving everything she had to beat him. In a sprint back, she actually caught up to him out of sheer will.

Since it was Easter, all the shops nearby were closed.

Fast forward to this past weekend. She had her first game, and she still hadn’t met all the girls on the team. We arrived first, and it was a middle school where one of our friends had gone before. The kids had come for a musical, Cinderella, however, they didn’t recall, even though it was only 2 years ago. Dave brought Peyton’s glove and a softball out to work on grounders. Soon, H and her sisters arrived. We went into the gym to watch the game before Peyton’s. Soon, the sister coaches arrived, having come in from a funeral. The other team only had three girls, but they were huge! They were at least a head taller than Peyton, who was the tallest member of the team last week. The two third graders are the tallest on the team. We later learned the last member we hadn’t met was also a third grader and was a hair taller than Peyton. Peyton was selected to jump ball, and I think the other team felt bad for us, so they started a shorter girl to jump against Peyton, though she was still taller than her. We got the ball, and Peyton passed to her point guard. Normally, P and H were used to running point and shooting guard, but now they were the low post players, which they are definitely not used to playing. They were both asked to stay down low under the basket, but the ball handlers weren’t looking down low for the pass as our previous team was strong in doing. At one point, Peyton was wide open and flapping her arms around looking for the pass. She looked like she was going to take flight down there! Later, she got a loose ball and ended up taking the ball all the way down the court for two points. She scored the team’s first four points. The other basket was a pass from H, and Peyton set her shot and got an easy two points under the basket. The other team wasn’t as technically-skilled than ours, but they were just tall. Our team was playing pretty aggressively, getting lots of steals. Ryan and Dave were relegated to the bench, but they still both coached our two as they have the past three seasons with four teams. At one point, Ryan told Peyton “go get that ball”. Here’s the result of that:

Too bad she got it stripped at the end and didn’t jump stop to get it in the hole!

Our team was up by 10 points by just after the half, but in the fourth quarter, full court press is allowed. I think the girls were thrown off by this, and that they were not completely aware to help out with this. They looked a bit confused, but soon they figured it out and learned how to get around the defense. In the end, they remained ahead and won the game 20-16. It was rather intense, especially as I was sitting right behind the two dad coaches.

We had to forfeit this weekend because of spring break and too many girls are gone, so we’ll have to wait until next weekend for Saturday practice, Sunday game!
