Out of Commission

Usually, when Brandon gets sick, he is still able to play.  But this illness has totally wiped him out.  He had another bout of vomiting yesterday morning, a few hours after breakfast.  That one was the worst – he had been hungry, so I gave him a fair amount of baby rice cereal and cut up a banana.  I was happy because he kept it down for a few hours.  I thought we were in the clear.  Until right before naptime, when he erupted.  Nothing like the smell of vomit mixed with bananas (my favorite, yuck)!  Then more diarrhea.  So he had it out of both ends.  Later yesterday he had a fever, which prompted another call to the advice nurse.  It was low grade, so nothing to worry too much over.  A fever of 101 is expected, over 104 is concerning, and > 106 is a medical emergency.  His was only 99F axillary.  I was just worried because it was new.  They said vomiting could last 24-48 hours, and diarrhea anywhere from 1-7 days, but most likely around 3 days.  We just had to ride it out.

Dave brought home some saltines and Pedialyte in case Brandon refused food.  He ate a few crackers then wanted to go night-night at 7pm.  You know he’s sick when he asks to go to bed, especially that early.  So we laid him down outside and started to watch Frosty the snowman.  Then he threw up again – all over some of our older, extra pillows.  I guess it was time to rotate those out anyways.  So he went to bed after we cleaned him up (his own bed).  He woke up at 2am and 6am and I fed him just to give him some fluids.  While he was nursing, I could hear his tummy rumbling.  When he woke up again for good around 8am, he was starving.  He was fussy and asked Dave to give him some cereal.  So he got some Cheerios, then asked for more.  Then he asked for water.  Man, this was all like what happened yesterday.  I knew he was hungry, so I fed him, but then it backfired.  After the Cheerios and water, he asked Dave for rice (porridge, that Dave had made last night).  He wanted a second serving but Dave told him to wait a little bit to make sure he didn’t throw it up.  Brandon didn’t understand this, and started crying.  So Dave held him and he fell asleep in his arms, just like when he was little.  He woke up after a little bit, then had this humungous poop – it busted out of his diaper and down his leg in the jumper.  I heard it and Dave was in denial.  Then I smelled it, so Dave got him up to change him.  It was so explosive – like back when he only breastfed – yellowish, sticky, but really smelly.   It was so bad, Dave had to give him a bath right then and there.  I had to rinse out the jumper before putting it in the wash.  If it weren’t new and 3T, I would have considered throwing it away.

We’re just watching Little Einstein’s; he is definitely not himself, almost lethargic.  He’s sat still in one place for over an hour, kinda just zoning out.  Wait, he just clapped at the curtain call!  Maybe, he’s finally on the road to recovery.  For now, he’s just nursing some Pedialyte and enjoying the cartoons.  This is definitely the sickest Brandon’s ever been.  Good thing this weekend is pretty low-key.
