Quick Trip

We headed down south on Friday night for a quick trip.  Dave hadn’t fully made up his mind, though I had already been packed and ready to go.  He came home around 530 pm, after being there for Brandon’s leadership award in the morning.  He called his mom after we were on the road for about an hour.  We were informed that Meg, Jeff and the girls were already there!  We got in around 1 am-something, and while both kids had been asleep in the car, they were certainly wired when they got in.  Jeff greeted us at the door, as he had been working, and it took some time for the kids to settle down.  Finally, they went to sleep, and so did we.  The kids were all up the next morning, and we headed in to the park.  We grabbed fast passes for Radiator Springs Race Cars. I wasn’t totally sure that Peyton would want to ride it, since she hadn’t wanted to after the first time she went on it.  We did put a little peer pressure on her, since EVERYONE else would be riding it.  She whined a bit when we talked to her about it before, but she didn’t really say anything when we told her we were all getting fast passes.  The fast passes weren’t until later in the afternoon, so she had some time to think about it.  She was on a time out from her not falling asleep the night before, so the rest of us went on Toy Story Mania.  Brandon and Abby sat together, while I paired up with Meg, and Jeff and Penelope went together.  We met up with Dave and Peyton after the ride was over.  We stayed around DCA for the morning, riding the Silly Swings, and trying to get on to Goofy’s sky school, but it was down.  We headed to the Little Mermaid, then Soarin’ , the racers and then lunch.  We didn’t want to do lunch before the racers, just in case.  Peyton didn’t complain when we went in line for the race cars.  She was fine when we got in the car, and we were trying to race family versus family, but we got off by a car.  She even told me, “It’s coming!” when she knew it was the fast part coming up.  Then, she was plastered to the side of the car, but not crying, so that was a good sign.  Dave had the go-pro on her, but I didn’t see what the footage of that was yet.  We all went to have lunch in our favorite salad/pasta spot, then we had our kids take a nap.  Dave and I shared an ice cream, then Abby found a classmate, Ryan, his younger brother, Eric, and their grandma, in the park, and we all headed over to Disneyland.  Brandon woke up and the big kids all went to Matterhorn.  When Peyton woke up, I took her to Buzz.  We met up at Star Tours.  Meg and the boys’ grandma didn’t want to go, so Dave, Jeff, and I took all 6 kids on the ride.  Jeff had told me that Eric was pretty quiet, and didn’t interact with him much, if at all in the past when the families had hung out.  While we were in line, Meg bought churros for everyone, except Brandon, who was still on his dessert ban.  Jeff had offered him some, and Brandon declined, without looking at me, and earned some dessert time back.  Jeff’s still Brandon’s favorite uncle!  Once they got a little sugar in them, the kids were all talking to one another.  Abby was talking to Ryan, and Penelope was giving Brandon hugs, and finally, Peyton and Eric (4 turning 5 in June) were chatting together.  Eric is a big Star Wars fan, and I heard Peyton ask him, “What color is your lightsaber?”  Apparently, he has many of them.  It was funny seeing them both interact, since both are pretty reclusive, especially with strangers!  We finished the ride, then the boys had to go, since their grandma was done for the day.  We headed over to Pirates, and again, Peyton rode it out of peer pressure.  I assured her that there were “no real pirates”.  She sat in front of us on the end with Brandon, Abby, and then Jeff.  Jeff asked her if she wanted him to sit on the end, but she was okay without him.  Meg and Penelope sat with Dave and me.  We were so tired by this time, we put our heads down on the front rail.  I told Peyton to make sure Brandon didn’t fall out, and I told Brandon to make sure Peyton didn’t fall out.  Brandon told Peyton about the two waterfalls, and when I looked up and over at them, he had his hand wrapped around her leg to make her feel better.  I’d fallen asleep on the ride and woke up to “Mommy”.  I thought the boat had already stopped, but Brandon was just telling me something about the part of the ride where we were.  It was pretty jarring!  After that, we headed to dinner outside the park.  We came back in for one last ride, the Haunted Mansion.  Being that it was late, it was getting dark, and thus spookier around there.  Peyton whined a bit, but Dave was holding her, and went on the ride with her.  Abby and Brandon had ridden all the other rides in the day together, but suddenly, neither wanted to go just by themselves.  We split up, and I took Abby while Brandon took Jeff.  It was so cute to see them so chicken!  She stuck to my arm the entire ride, except when we both looked over the “Doombuggy” to find the hidden Mickey in the plates. She also separated when we found out the hitch-hiking ghost was sitting on her lap!   We all headed out after that ride.  We had to stop for gas, so it took us a little while to go back home.

The next morning, we got up, and had breakfast together.  Then the Shih’s went off in different directions, while we headed to the park solo.  It is a different experience with the cousins.  Brandon and Peyton get so much more excited going to the park with them, than when we are by ourselves.  We started our day with Playhouse Jr, and Brandon told me right off the bat, “I don’t want to be here.”  I told him we could do something fun that he wanted to do after.  We headed to get Fast Passes for the Rapids ride, which was Brandon’s pick.  Then, we headed back out of the park for lunch.  It took awhile, and Peyton said, “But we haven’t even been on a ride yet!”  We tried to go back to the Rapids for our fast passes, but the ride was down.  At this point, we told the kids to take a nap.  Then, taking note from how Ted and Michelle do things, I headed for the Toy Story Mania ride to wait out most of the 50 minute wait.  Dave met up with me after the kids had woken from their nap. Peyton and I rode together, while Brandon and Dave were in back of us.  I was hoping for the vehicle high score, but I was again beaten by a Tsao sibling (Meg beat me the day before).  Then, we headed over to D-land so that I could try again on Buzz.  The kids rode together, while Dave and I rode behind them.  This was a close one, too, as Dave had to fight from behind to beat me!  Brandon and Dave went to ride Space Mountain, while Peyton and I rode Autopia.  We saw one of the doctors with whom I work, and since they had fast passes, they walked by us.  We later chatted while on the track!  We were waiting to pull back into the line, and we sat there while our daughters looked on, trying to figure out why we were both talking to “strangers”.  Then, we headed out of the park since it was another late night.  We weren’t sure if the girls would still be up, but they were both just showered, and heading to bed.  Both kids were almost out on the way home, but again, they were both wired when we got in.  We had to impose more “fines” for their behavior in the form of delaying breakfast.  Turned out, this morning, we were going out for breakfast, so they had to wait in any case.  We all ate breakfast out, then we all headed in different directions. Both families arrived home safely.  We took awhile since there was some traffic, as well as a stop at the outlets.
