Today, Peyton and I dropped Brandon off at school and watched flag salute. Then, we headed to Peyton’s school. I reviewed with her in the car about the no crying at drop off. She joked with me and was laughing saying, “No crying!” like it was silly we were even talking about it. I was hoping she would own up to it, and when I dropped her off, the kids were in the playground. She was fine, and even said, “Goodbye, Mommy!” I waved to her, and left her to settle in. She was just staring out into the sea of kids playing. Then, she ran over to Sydney and the girls to play. I was watching her from the window, with another boy’s mom who’d also just dropped her son off. I came back home to clean up a little, then I rehearsed my book to read to the class. It wasn’t that I wanted to practice the words as much as I did the timing. I only had 20 minutes. It was a book about a dragon trying to figure out what kind of creature he was. There was a mixture of some Chinese characters in there, but their English meanings were there. It took me about 15 minutes to read the book. Then there was a short epilogue, which I included in my time. I felt comfortable with that, and I’d also prepared the Chinese zodiac for discussion should I still have more time. I changed into my volunteer shirt, and headed over to school. I checked into the office, and as I was signing in, I got a tap on my arm. There was a boy with an ice pack on his face, but I noticed it was Theo. The nurse told him to come back in the room, but he said, “I was just saying hi to my friend’s mom.” I thought it was so sweet, and happy to hear that they are still friends (sometimes they get into trouble with one another). I wished him well, since it looked like something had happened, then went on to Brandon’s class.
Just as I’d gotten to the door, and was trying to figure out a way in (the door is locked), Mrs L opened the door. I think we surprised each other! She went back inside, then I was let in by the door monitor. She introduced me as “Mrs. Mah” (which sounds weird, like MY mom is Mrs. Mah). But I took my seat at the front of the class and greeted Room 38. The class was very quiet, and respectful as I read the story. One boy, T, started telling me all the characters in Chinese! He blurted out the Chinese words for the characters represented. I thanked him politely, and continued on with the story. At the end, I had about 5 minutes for Q&A. I think I fielded 10 questions and comments. T told us that he was born in China, and that he thought he saw dragons there. Another girl said she went to Chinatown before, and she saw dragons there. Two girls, including, B, said, “I liked the book.” It was really sweet. B is a tall girl, about Brandon’s height. She plays basketball on the girls’ team in Brandon’s league. Brandon was looking for a valentine from her, and he was a bit saddened that he didn’t see one from her. He didn’t point anyone else out for not giving him only, only B. (Later he told me, “I asked her why she didn’t give me one, after asking Mrs L. B told me that she gave me one, and maybe it fell out of my bag.”) I was surprised he would ask her! I guess they are too young to beat around the bush. I wrapped up the questions and comments, and then I took Brandon out of class early. I just walked him over to chess club. I dropped him off and waited for him to be let in. I realized half of his basketball team is in chess club. Perhaps this is why they have yet to win a game in basketball. Just sayin’. I went back home again, and in less than an hour later, I was back. I ran into Brandon’s teacher from last year. We were chatting how he was doing, as she’d heard he was doing well. She loved the fact that the boys from her classroom were so close even though they were spread out amongst different classrooms. She even asked how Peyton was doing. We’ve been fortunate to have two really good teachers so far, and they are really interested in their students. She waited until the kids were dismissed, and as the kids came out, she wondered where Brandon was. Finally, he came out and over to us. She chatted with him for a bit before we left to go to his doctor’s appointment.
We had the same MA from Peyton’s appointment, and she remembered us! She remembered Peyton not wanting to do the eye exam, and remembered Brandon, too. She took Brandon’s blood pressure and didn’t like what she saw. She wanted to repeat it in the room with the manual cuff. His blood pressure was about the same as what mine is, but that’s too high for a kid. She also took his measurements. Brandon is really thinning out – here are his stats: height 50’3/4″ (90%) and 53 lb 14.4 oz (64%). Dave came into the exam room just as the MA was leaving. His blood pressure when the doctor finally took it was 110/64. She clocked his pulse at 124 bpm. Because of this, we have to take him back every 3 months for a weight, height and blood pressure check. Poor kid, already showing signs of inheriting the bad genes in the family.

We went to pick Peyton up, though Dave got there first and went to pick Peyton up in her room, while Brandon and I went to see Tarez. After we left school, we headed to the library. Peyton never saw us there, as they left the room right as we’d passed it. Dave and I exchanged looks in the hallway. Brandon kept telling us he was tired, since Peyton woke him up this morning. That was a first. I knew he was tired because he kept yawing. We met Dave and Peyton nearby to eat an early dinner. Dave was still on east coast time, so he was hungry. This was our v-day celebration, as we’d ordered sushi, which we did last year. The kids split a pretty good sized bento box. Dave is bathing the kids now, and giving them their souvenirs. Brandon got a colonial and crown flagbearer figurines, while Peyton got “Goodnight, Boston” to add to our “Goodnight” cities series. She was reading it at dinner while we awaited food. Now they are tasting the pastries Dave brought back from Boston. Both kids are excited for the extra long weekend!
