Playdate

Today, I attended an all day field trip with Peyton. I was supposed to have one other girl, then it turned out she was at Dland and didn’t tell the teachers until they contacted her. Then, I was supposed to have another girl, but she never showed either. So, it was just Peyton and me! Sydney and her dad were another pair, so it was like a playdate! The bus ride was over an hour long, and Peyton ended up slumped over against me on the ride up. We had seatbelts, so I felt a little safer, and they helped keep her against the chair back. I was feeling a bit queasy, since the seat-belted buses have taller seat backs, and you can’t see above them. I ended up looking out the window, but since I was looking to the side, it was a bit nauseating. I ended up sleeping, too, until we got to the base of the bridge. The kids were excited to cross the GG bridge! We unloaded the bus, had snack, and then headed out to explore. Peyton had fun, and so did I since I didn’t have to keep track of so many kids! We had lunch after an hour of being there, and then let the kids loose again to run around the playground. We packed up the bus by 230 pm, then headed home. Peyton fell asleep again! I swear she has sleeping sickness! She woke up again right before we got back to school, then we headed home. We worked more on her puzzle, then Brandon and Dave got home. Lately, he’s been so sweet! He was telling me about his day, thanked Dave again for his Pokemon cards, and then went to take a shower as asked. I kissed both kids goodnight, then headed out to dinner to celebrate Tracy’s birthday. We were meeting up at a local restaurant, and had a great time catching up. Tomorrow is the first day of swim class. Let’s see how they do!

Memory!

We are trying to make it to see Ms Kristina before she leaves her current work, Peyton and Brandon’s old school. I asked Peyton about it, and she said she wanted to go. Then she said, “And Miss Jim?” I told her we could go see them both! Then Brandon chimed in and said, “And Miss Viola?” Wow, Miss Viola was soooo long ago! For Brandon, that was over 4 years ago since he’s seen her, his last time he attended the school, right around this time! Peyton didn’t know who he was talking about, but it was like he was reaching far back into his brain for that one. Boys’ Day

Today, I took Peyton to school while Dave took Brandon on his field trip to the local amusement park. Dave was excited since he’d never been there before. I used to go all the time in high school, since it was relatively close to our house, though at the time, it felt really far (30 minutes on the freeway). Dave was texting me updates throughout the morning, as he was telling me how whiny some parents can be, while the kids are go-with-the-flow. They had to arrange the kids by height, since that is the limiting factor on most of the rides. They also had water stuff, and some kids didn’t get the memo and were wearing inappropriate clothes. One or two other parents went, but Dave drove in his own car, while leaving Brandon to hang out on the bus with the other kids. He didn’t want to take him separately since he didn’t want to isolate him. It turned out to be a group of 10 kids with 4 chaperones, so that wasn’t too bad. Dave had 3 groups of siblings, and they were all calm. I texted him back, “What happened to ours?!” He also had the sisters whose dad is a cop. Dave was totally worried about that! I told him they were good girls, but he was still nervous. The texts slowed during the middle of the day, which allowed me to concentrate, and meant that they were having fun. After I picked Peyton up, I gave her a choice – 1) go to a local tex-mex place, 2) go to sweet tomatoes, or 3) go home and eat, then go out again for froyo. She picked #3! I was surprised she didn’t go with sweet tomatoes, but maybe she is getting tired of it! So we went home, had dinner here, then after she was done, we headed back out. She got to pick two flavors, and I threw in some fruit for her. She also had a scoop of popping boba, which is always fun to watch her eat. After we finished up there, we headed next door to the Japanese dollar grocery store. We shopped around a bit, and got a 300 piece puzzle, a pair of scissors, and a set of cookie cutters, all for under 5$. We headed home, and I told her if she bathed and got ready for bed, and the boys weren’t home, then she could do her puzzle. Children over nine should take one capsule twice a cheap viagra day. She got everything done, came downstairs, and we started working on the puzzle. She chose the Brooklyn Bridge, over a picture of some puppies or some kitties. She told me, “We need to put the frame together. But some people at my school don’t know what a frame is.” She’s getting a little high and mighty…but I told her that she should explain to her friends what it is. She wanted my help, but didn’t want my help, so I tried to ignore her while she figured things out. I did help her sort the edges and pushed the middles away from the area where she was working. She didn’t mind me helping with that, but she wanted to put the pieces together herself. After 830pm, Brandon and Dave walked in the door. They’d gone to Sweet Tomatoes after spending most of their day in the park. They stayed after the school had already left! Dave said there was a bit of reverse peer pressure, and Brandon didn’t want to ride the roller coaster he had been talking about all morning long! None of the other kids in his group wanted to go, so he chickened out, too. It was only after they’d left that Dave convinced him to go on it, and then they went twice! Dave had thoroughly exhausted the boy! They had to eat their lunches that were made at CDC by 10 am because they weren’t allowed in the park. And they stopped for a pretzel during the middle of the day, but other than that, they didn’t eat until they were done! I can’t imagine the two of them eating their way through Sweet tomatoes tonight. While I was flossing his teeth, Brandon said, “I had SO much fun today!” I told him that maybe he should thank Daddy for going with him. He said, “I will when he comes to give me a hug.” He was very appreciative, and thanked Dave when he came to the room. Dave, in turn, told Brandon he had a great day, and he did a great job behaving. I’m glad they had fun, and I hope to have fun tomorrow with Peyton. I hear there are only 23 kids going, meaning we probably only have 2-3 kids in each group. The kids didn’t go to sleep until almost 9 pm, which is super late for them! Brandon has another field trip tomorrow, but fortunately, it’s at the local park. Both will be exhausted as we head into the weekend!

Volunteerism

Dave got to take a day off work to go volunteer. He was able to take both kids to school, then headed up to the food bank to do some manual labor. He was really enjoying, and he treated it like a game, to get things done as quickly and as efficiently as possible. I think that’s what we DO have in common, as I would try to make something mundane “fun” by making a game out of it. They were packaging food boxes for seniors, so definitely a worthy cause. Unfortunately, due to insurance issues, the place won’t accept kids until they are 14 years old. Both Dave and I agree that the kids should be involved in the community efforts, but picking up trash on the side of the road is a bit dangerous. We’re even willing to forgo the insurance issues for them to do this stuff, but the company won’t allow. He came home after his 5 hours of service, and then picked Brandon up for some baseball practice. Brandon is going to be playing on a tournament team this summer, so Dave’s getting him ready for that. It happens to be on the same weekend I’m planning a baby shower, so at least the boys will have something to do. Since it’s at our house, we may be able to go see a few games after the party is done. It’s specifically for ages 7 and below, so Coach Tom, Hana, Dave and Brandon will be reunited.
Peyton and I got home, and saw Dave’s car. We thought they got home already, but it turns out that they had walked. So, we headed out on foot, too. Peyton was so excited, so was running! I had to jog to keep up with her, and I’d already run 3 miles at lunchtime. As soon as we turned the corner, Brandon and Dave were headed back. But since we had just gotten there, they turned around. We played a bit, but were scared off by this dirty little boy. He wasn’t being watched very well and kept offering us this nasty piece of chocolate that was all over his hands. His babysitters were too busy playing, so he came to play with us, but he was rude! He sat right down on Dave’s baseball bag, getting chocolate all over it. Then, he wouldn’t get up after being asked, until Dave picked up the bag from underneath him. So, Peyton headed for the monkey bars, and was making her way across. She got to the edge, and put her feet on the bars. As soon as she did that, he pushed her feet off the landing, trying to make her fall. We caught her, but decided it wasn’t worth it to stay. I even had to tell the boy it was rude to push! He was only about 3 or so, but he was rough! And I didn’t want him to chase me around with the chocolate, which I swore looked like dog poop!! We all walked back, and then washed up for dinner. Tomorrow Dave will continue his “volunteerism” by taking Brandon to Great America as a chaperone. He was informed he’d be in charge of 6 other kids! I guess it’s 2 adults for 6 kids, which doesn’t sound bad, but he doesn’t know any of these kids. And there is a water park there, too, so he’ll have his hands full I’m sure. I’ll get my chance on Friday, when we go up to Sausalito with Peyton and her class.

The Stare

The other day, both kids were waiting for me in the car, and as I got in, I just said to pretend there was a wall between the two seats, and neither kid was allowed to cross it. Ever the tester, Brandon was pointing a wiki stick over the “line” and into Peyton’s airspace. He was giggling, being his goofy self, and instead of the whining and crying from Peyton’s side, I heard nothing. Absolute silence. I continued to drive, and then Brandon was the one who broke the silence. “Mommy, Peyton’s just staring at me! It’s creeping me out.” At the red light, I turned around to see “the Stare” that she was giving him. She has not lost it from her baby days, when she’d stare coldly at passersby who were trying to be friendly and get the “baby” to smile. And she proved her point. I told him that she didn’t like it, and she was letting him know.

Budding Chef

My work offers a cooking class in conjunction with our local grocery store. I signed Brandon up, as the minimum age was 6 years old. I thought there was a parent component, but it turns out it was just the kids. I met Dave and Brandon there to register Brandon and see what the class was all about. Peyton wanted to join, but she can’t even reach the top of the butcher’s block, so it’s definitely not for her. Even as it was, I think Brandon was the youngest there, based on size. And I think the only boy. We registered him at one spot, then dropped him off at the demo area. He didn’t even flinch! I had to tell Dave to go back in there and give him the heads’ up. Dave told him he’d be in the store walking around, and that he’d be back after class was done in 2 hours. I was snickering because on the table tops were a bunch of ingredients, and zucchini was one. I think zucchini is on Brandon’s short list of “do not like to eats”. I think it may be alone; that’s his kryptonite, except when I put it in zucchini bread. We walked around with Peyton, who was happy to have both parents and no brother around. She then started complaining she was hungry, so I took her home to eat. We snuck a peek again, but I told Peyton we were in ninja mode, and I didn’t want Brandon to see us. He was engaged, looking at the table top, as the chef was telling them all something. He didn’t see us, so we ducked out. Dave stuck around and gave me some updates, like just now, “He’s eating.” I’m sure that is his favorite part! I’m so proud of him, as he definitely is not the shy one, and willing to jump into something with both feet! He is so willing to try new things, especially if it involves food! I’ll have to see what he says when he comes home! He’ll have 3 more sessions, breaking for the week that we are gone.

*Update* Dave said at the end of class, he saw Brandon shaking something onto his food, then eating. There was an older boy egging him on to do something. Later, Dave realized it was a salt shaker. WHAT?! They are supposed to be “Thriving” and there is a salt shaker? They will be getting a call from me tomorrow.

Independent Learners

Last night, I opened up Brandon’s journal to a blank page. I told him to make sure he wrote in the journal since tomorrow was Monday, “a weekday”. I left his pencils and eraser right on his desk. This morning, I woke up and went to find Peyton, who was reading a book quietly in Brandon’s room. That got me off to a good start for our last full week before we are on vacation!! The count down has begun.

Baseball Recognition

Brandon was watching some baseball this weekend, and he saw a player “Freeman”.  He shouted out, “Hey, that’s Freddie Freeman!”  We were watching the Giants game, and this guy was on the opposing team.  I asked him, “How did you know who that was?”  They hadn’t just flashed his name, stats, or anything like that, so I didn’t get it.  And it’s not like he’s an Atlanta Braves fan!  He said, “Oh, I have his baseball card.”  So, men who are buy cialis levitra facing the problem with the erections during the sexual intercourse. He knows quite a few players like that.  He’s received two packs of cards this year from his team.  I just went through a stack of cards, and Freeman wasn’t one of them.  So, I’m not sure what year he’s referring to.  Dave thinks we should give him some more cards, and maybe he’ll “Rainman” it and start memorizing stats on the back.  I think Dave likes the fact that Brandon’s getting more into baseball now!

Father’s Day

Today, I gave Dave the best father’s day ever – an hour alone at home 🙂 I took the kids with me on some errands, though Dave just took the time to do errands, too, so it wasn’t really his time. We met back at the house, and then we headed to lunch for a free burger for Dave! We went to the farmer’s market, then we came home to take naps. Brandon didn’t sleep, but watched baseball with Dave, asking him a million questions about batting average, walks, and some other rules about baseball that he’ll need to learn along the way. Dave got us up so we could head over to celebrate Father’s day with Coach Tom and his family. We headed over to their club to hang out at the pool. We walked in with another lady, and then we couldn’t find them right away. Kai spotted us, then the kids needed no warm-up as they went to play with Hana and Kai. Adult swim was happening in 5 minutes, so the kids had to wait about 20 minutes (15 minutes of adult swim) and then they all headed in. I was changed, but Dave ended up in there with them. The water was only 3 feet, so it was safer for Peyton. She was doing backflips underwater for the first time. She just threw her head back, under water, and then kicked herself around, and flipped herself over…herself. I was so surprised she even knew what to do! I don’t know if she saw someone else doing it, but I didn’t see anyone else doing it. She started drifting too far away to the 4 feet area, where the bigger kids were, and then she started getting into trouble. Dave pushed her back in the shallower area, and she was good again. She got out on her own, and came over to me to dry off. After everyone got out, they headed inside for some glitter tattoos. The dads were hanging out grilling the meat and corn, then hanging out after it was done. We headed back when the kids got their tattoos, and enjoyed Korean short ribs, corn, poke, fried rice, and California roll in a pan. Everything was so yummy! The kids then went to play on the structure, and they all played so well together. The two older ones are 7, though separated by a grade in school, then Kai is 5 while Peyton is 4. They eventually made their way back, and had fun with the bubbles we brought with us. We left around 7 pm, not even realizing it was so late! Hopefully with all that swimming they did, they will sleep quickly tonight.

Here are the pics that they kids wanted taken of their tattoos.  Both of them took careful baths and pulled up their sleeves after they put their jammies on for bed.

(early) Father’s Day

Today, Dave got up early for a bike ride. He rode to my dad’s, while the kids and I hung out at home. Then, I got a “Where are you?” text, and I figured I’d better hurry it up. So, we loaded up the car, and headed to hang out with my dad for the day. The two dads were just hanging out, then both took showers after we’d gotten there. Our plan was to head out to lunch for my dad (and Dave), since we are going to another event tomorrow. We headed to a dumpling place, but we were 30 minutes early, since we’d gotten some wrong information on a website. Good thing I’d brought Brandon’ s baseball stuff, so we headed to a local park to throw some balls around. Unfortunately, the kids saw a structure and were more interested in that instead. So, my dad and I threw a ball around, while Dave took the kids over to the structure. My dad hasn’t thrown a ball in over 20 years, and with his “You throw like a girl comment”, I fired some at him 🙂 I don’t think he’s seen me throw and catch as an adult! After some time at the park, we packed up and headed back to the restaurant. We were still a bit early, then watched as the restaurant was opened for the day. Dave ordered like he’d not eaten for a week! Since he over-ordered, we ended up taking food to go. While we were waiting at lunch, we talked about heading to the fair. The kids were excited, and it’s the first time we’d taken them to our hometown county’s fair. We went back to my dad’s to get the stroller, and then headed to the fair. The kids wanted to ride the rides, but I told them that we save that for D-land. We walked around and visited some of the pavilions, as well as the Chinese acrobats. We saw a “Monster Corn Dog” and that thing was a force to be reckoned with, seriously one of the largest I’ve ever seen! I’m glad my dad wasn’t serious about getting one, as Brandon was totally drooling over it. Peyton never took a nap, though we thought maybe she would while we were walking around. There were too many things going on for her to fall asleep. When we got home, they saw some kids playing in the street. They were teens playing football, looking out for cars, and just being silly. The kids were fascinated! One of the teens said, “It’s like they’ve never seen white people before!” I heard it, but I wasn’t sure if it was referring to us. I was sitting with them, so they wouldn’t run into the street. I was also making sure they didn’t hit our cars as they had with a few others on the street. My dad even brought the kids as popsicle so they enjoyed that while they watched the teens. We headed home after the teens went back down the street. The highlight of the fair for me was watching the pig races 🙂 The kids and I climbed up the bleachers to sit down, while the dads hung out down below. We had to snake our way past those who were sitting already, and they tried to help Peyton, but she wouldn’t take the offer. She let me at least hold her hand, so I was able to guide her up there. Luckily, we made it without falling down, else, it may have been a domino effect with the three of us on top of each other. Here are the pictures from today:
