Today was going to be a long day. We set out to get the kids early as Brandon had practice back at home by 830 am. I think the waiter switched my decaf with caffeinated coffee at our 10 pm after dinner drink time, and I was up by 315 am. I couldn’t sleep. I think I was also worried about the kids, since they weren’t home. I was still up by the time Dave woke by 645 am, and we both got ready to go get them. I let us into my parents’ house, and we heard talking downstairs. My mom, Brandon and Peyton were just chatting away, at 730 am! She told me right away, “Guess what happened?! (before giving me a chance to answer…) I won a gift card.” “How?” I asked. “Well, we had to find a reindeer, snowman or Santa. And…I found the reindeer.” I asked her how, and she told us how she found the sticker under her chair. “And Auntie Jean was supposed to sit there!” My mom explained how she wanted the kids separated, so she put herself between then, sitting Peyton in the winning random chair. The sticker was placed under the chair, and she won a gift card for Target. My mom told us Brandon almost won in bowling! He got 125 and then 127. He beat my dad the first game! And my aunt, who used to be a league bowler, but was clearly out of practice. My mom was the only one who beat him (of those that were playing with them) with 147 (nice work, Mom!) Brandon and Peyton got the gutters up, but even then, Brandon told us he got two strikes right off the bat. My mom was amazed by his spin move that he has on the ball. That must be genetic, as that is how Dave does it, too!
We quickly gathered their belongings, and both to their dismay, we headed home. Neither wanted to leave, and they didn’t want to change out of their jammies. We finally got them out of the house, and we made it back home. Dave and Brandon left right before 830 am, while I convinced Peyton to go back to sleep with me. She didn’t resist too much, and we slept for another 1.5 hours. We got up, showered, and then I fed her a mini lunch before heading out. The downtown area was going to be crowded with Christmas decorations in the park and the Santa run ending. Street parking was limited, as they closed down streets for the run. After driving around for a bit, we found parking. As we walked to the decorations, we saw Orion and her family. Peyton was a bit shy, but she warmed up after a little bit. Orion was just as shy, so they both took some warm-up time. We walked back to the park, and then saw Neha. Peyton actually waved to her first. We walked around a bit, then headed to the theater. Natalie and Sydney were there, so after waiting for Sona and Misha, who didn’t arrive, we headed inside. Four out of five wasn’t bad. I finally texted Sona, right at curtain call, and she was waiting for us outside. They quickly entered right as the show began. We even saw Sheila, Nela’s sister, and her family there! Unlike the Sound of Music, this show was with mostly adults. Peyton knew some of the songs, but the girls got restless if there was too much dialogue. Luckily, there was plenty of singing to go around, and the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (wow, that made it past spell-check) number was phenomenal. The girls kept it together, and at intermission, they were given their M&Ms from Orion’s mom. I got Peyton to eat only half the bag, since it was two servings and a “share” size. She gladly handed it back to me for safe keeping for another time. We headed back in, and different arrangements were made for seating. Peyton took the end, while Misha sat where Peyton was. Orion sat with her mom, while Sydney eventually jumped up a row. In the end, the girls all had a great time, and enjoyed the show. I particularly liked the tap dance routine, with at least 20 performers all up on stage. We got to meet Mary afterward, though Peyton knew “her name wasn’t really Mary, it was Tiffany.” I’d gotten a text from Dave that he was claiming a rain check (literally) from Ted on Thursday. He’d texted him on Thursday as both were home in the flood, but Ted was in a different part of town, so he wasn’t free. Well, Dave and Brandon were already hanging out with them! I thought going over there meant that I’d go home, meet them, and go over together. I guess Dave had other plans, and didn’t want to wait for us! We arrived directly from the show. I reviewed the “rules” with Peyton about how to behave, and then I let her play with the kids who were already inside the house. It took awhile, but eventually, we were informed that the brothers were not playing nicely with their sisters (and NOT the Brothers Brown as initially thought). Of course. So, with some repeating of the rules of engagement, we were able to chat a little bit with the adults. Ted was making a cioppino, and it is one of Bonnie’s faves, so they were invited to partake. Since it’s not one of Stuart’s, he enjoyed potstickers. It was decided that the adults would eat first, since the kids were entertaining themselves. Slowly, the girls and Brandon joined in on the eating, and both eat some potstickers and broccoli and cauliflower. Both eat relatively quickly, so they could go back and play. Brandon hung around with the second round to eat a little bit of cioppino, though he really just wanted the crab. He then took off. We waited for all the kids to be done before Dave served some ice cream that he’d brought from the local ice cream shop. We let the kids play one song of Just dance, though it was only the home team (Kao kids) and the eldest Brown who participated. I was surprised neither Peyton nor Brandon wanted to play, though both were happy to watch the kids and big kid dance like foxes. We took Peyton’s meltdown as a time to leave. She was upset by a multitude of things, and was being grumptastic. I did manage to tickle a few thank you’s out of her to our hosts. Dave won the honor of taking both kids home. Peyton fell asleep in the short ride, but she was coaxed in eventually. She was quickly changed as she’d showered already, and then sent to bed. Not a peep was heard and not a creature was stirring. Brandon had a good game, winning by 13, and making 3 free throws, however having only one count, as he had a line violation. What I told him was that was an easy fix, as Dave told me he barely crossed the line, but at least he got it IN the basket. Now he just has to get his footwork a little better. He had a few steals, and some rebounds, so he is playing a bit more aggressively, which Dave is encouraging. I was sad to have missed the game, but I didn’t want to miss the show, as like Sound of Music, this was the last performance in its run. We will look forward to Mulan in the spring! Here are our pictures from today…
